The Red Resume
! WHAT is Networking?
! WHEN is it important
! WHERE is networking done?
! WHY is it so important?
! WHO is it important to?
! HOW should it be done?
Networking
Recreate YOU for impact. Your look! Your mannerisms! The way you speak! Maximize how you engage the world, and control how they see you!
You are more than your resume. YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCE!!!
What is your elevator speech? What is your anti-elevator speech?
Be about Critical thinking in the midst of doing, imitation, acting, flattery, realism, and reading – all this applies to guaranteeing a job, and more importantly keeping it!
The Power Move – Bring it all together to blow them away at job fairs, in interviews, wherever they may be. LOCK THE JOB!
Networking
The Elevator Speech
• Write down 3 things that make you special, 3 statements that you would say about yourself upon meeting someone.
• The elevator speech is your seconds long commercial to let someone know who you are and what you do, and why you do it so well.
Exercise
Networking
GET OFF THE WALL!
GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!
NETWORKING CAN MAKE YOU UNCOMFORTABLE!
Like Nike says, “Just do it.” That’s right, tell yourself that meeting new contacts is necessary in order to shorten your job search.
Think of what it really is, connecting with people who are at a networking event to help each other in the hopes of developing relationships. The emphasis is on getting to know each other and not entirely on creating business or gathering leads. You’ll meet again.
The Anti-Elevator Speech
• What AMAZING thing do you do?
• How would you introduce that amazing thing in conversation?
• The anti-elevator speech starts with a hook, or a short statement that attracts attention:
When someone asks, “What do you do for a living?” You reply “You dream it up, I make it happen.”
Exercise
Networking
Set a goal of how many people you’ll talk with. If you’re an extrovert, you may prefer to work the room—the more the better. Introverts prefer fewer but deeper conversations, so set a goal of meeting two or three quality contacts.
Get emotionally prepared by choosing a nice outfit to wear, but nothing too fancy. The ones who have been attending for a while are usually nicely dressed. Don’t wear a suit to an event if it’s not called for. On the other hand don’t go under dressed. Critical thinking required. Know the audience, and no matter how it goes down, remain CONFIDENT!
Networking
Have your personal business cards ready. Some people say there’s nothing more embarrassing than being asked for your card and not having one. However, if you don’t have a card CONFIDENCE can carry the day. Trade info on your smartphone, or confidently be gauche and write their information down on a piece of paper. Let your conversation close the deal and make the card insignificant.
Approach people who are standing alone. They’re waiting for someone like you to start the conversation. They’re out of their comfort zone too, so you can feel good about helping someone get acclimated. Have no fear of how he/she looks. Remember, stars are up in the sky. People are here on Earth, and we all do some of the same things.
Networking
Speaking of conversation, you should have your talking points ready. Current events are fine as long as you stay away from religion and politics. No sense in starting an argument. If conversation isn’t going well, break away very politely. No hard feelings.
Don’t come on too strong. I still remember a public relations coordinator who approached me at a trade show, hand outstretched, and launched into his memorized 30-second commercial. He sounded stiff an unnatural.
You’ll need an elevator speech, but ease into it with a little small talk, or wait until you’re asked about yourself.
Networking
Listen to others. This will help you get outside your comfort zone because it will allow you time to think about what you want to say–especially helpful for those who dislike making small talk. Take a breather if you need to. Walk outside and take in some fresh air. Just remember to return.
Once you’ve accomplished getting outside your comfort zone and feel great about “Just doing it,” you will need to follow-up with the people you met. Take the attitude that if you don’t initiate the follow-up it won’t happen, even if this means getting outside your comfort zone.
This … is the interview
The Critical Thinking Questions:
• What are you thinking? • How do you feel? • How can you contribute? • Why are you here? • Why are you doing this? • What do you want? • When will you be ready … truly ready? • Who are you? • Who are you trying to convince? • Where can you do what you do?
Interviewing
Interviewing
• DO NOT ARRIVE LATE. ISN’T THAT OBVIOUS?
DO NOT ARRIVE TOO EARLY. THAT’S NOT SO OBVIOUS … WAIT ELSEWHERE AND DON’T PRESSURE THE INTERVIEWER.
• DON’T DRESS IN RUSH.
NO SMOKING.
• NO CHEWING GUM.
• NO DRUGS!
Interviewing
• BRING YOUR ARTIFACTS AND KNOW YOUR SUBJECT MATTER – DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
• CAN I BRING A FRIEND OR RELATIVE?
• SKIPPING A DRESS REHEARSAL.
• ADMITTING A FLAW.
• NOT KNOWING YOUR OWN STRENGTHS.
Interviewing
• DON’T ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS.
• DON’T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF NOT ASKING ANY.
• INQUIRING ABOUT BENEFITS TOO SOON.
• REVEALING YOUR PRICE TAG.
• CRYING DISCRIMINATION.
• BAD MOUTHING YOUR BOSS.
Interviewing
• IS NAME DROPPING OKAY?
• NO ENERGY FAILURE!
• NOTHING IS WORSE THAN A WEAK HANDSHAKE.
• IS IT OKAY TO GLANCE AT YOUR WATCH?
Interviewing
• DON’T PORTRAY YOURSELF AS THE SUPERHERO.
• DON’T LOSE YOUR COOL – SOME QUESTIONS MAY UNNERVE YOU. RELAX, BE CALM, AND GIVE YOUR BEST ANSWER!
• NOW THAT WE HAVE THAT BEHIND US … SET THE RULES ASIDE and really FOCUS ON BEING THE BEST YOU
The application of Critical Thinking!
3FE Find : State the issue, problem, or opportunity
Focus : Write down the facts 5WH establish the Fundamentals : Possible Solutions Execute : Run and Gun it! Follow the plan!
Utilizing 3FE (Find)
THE FIRST STEP IS FIND:
FIND (Problem, Issue, Opportunity)
I want to get along with my Boss!
THE SECOND STEP IS FOCUS:
" FOCUS (5WH) 1. Who: Joe Example. 2. What: I need to get along with my boss. 3. When: Now! 4. Where: Team meeting, hallway, everywhere! 5. Why: He controls my destiny?? 6. How: Differentiation – I need a plan that works!
Utilizing 3FE (Focus)
Utilizing 3FE (Fundamentals)
THE THIRDS STEP IS Establish The FUNDAMENTALS:
" Build your To Do list of critical activities. " Manage your To Do List. " Review and update your list on a daily basis. " Pro/Con analysis of opportunities.
What is the Hallmark of the Critical Thinker?
The aspiring critical thinker seeks to internalize and understand the perspectives of others, most especially when that perspective is diametrically or even violently opposed to their own.
Conflict Management & Critical Thinking
The Manager Relationship
Can you think of a situation where your relationship with your manager hurt
your performance?
Critical Question: Why?
The Manager Relationship
Can you think of a time where a new manager came in and you went from
the best thing since sliced bread to the BOOGER ON THE BLOCK … worst
employee ever?
Critical Question: Why?
The Manager Relationship
Why is your relationship with your manager so critical?
She writes my review. She determines if I will get promoted. He can override me. I need his respect in order to be successful. A poor relationship with my manger will make my day hellish.
Listening Is Critical
Force yourself to pay attention.
Listen without judging or criticizing.
Listen openly, even when the speaker's point of view is different from your own.
Don't interrupt.
Avoid thinking about your response.
Ask for clarification when something is unclear to you.
Paraphrase or restate something complex.
Listening Is Critical
Maintain eye contact with the speaker.
Use facial gestures (smile, nod, etc.) to acknowledge listening and understanding.
Listen for the whole message.
Empathize to reflect an understanding of the speaker's feelings.
Don't assume you know what the speaker is going to say next.
The Model
Active Listening & Speaking
1) The person with the ball is the only one that can speak. 2) The person holding the ball speaks and completes their thought (never too long). 3) The person listening repeats back what they heard in order to ensure they have heard it
accurately. 4) The person holding the ball says yes you heard it right or no you did not. If no, then they
clarify, repeating the cycle. 5) The person holding the ball then passes it to the other person to speak. 6) The new person now has the opportunity to speak, and the other person must listen
without interrupting.
