Focusing on Students with Frequent Absences

Data Deep Dive

The main focus is on the students who had greater than 10 percent absences for the year-to-date.

Of those students, NSS identified factors* including:• Walkers or bussers• Heritage factor (such as going to Mexico or Puerto Rico for extended times)• Transient or homeless• Documented medical issue• Other factors (identified mental health, domestic violence, parental incarceration or

unknown)*some students are in more than one category

Raising Attendance: What Works

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

Parent/guardian involvement, or whole family involvement.

A continuum of supports, including meaningful incentives for good attendance and consequences for poor attendance.

Collaboration among community actors such as law enforcement, mental health workers, mentors, and social service providers, in addition to educators.

Concrete and measurable goals for program performance and student performance, as well as good record keeping and on-going evaluation of progress toward those goals.

Address School policies that work against attendance?

• Example: truancy leads to suspension (not a policy at GCSD)

Rewards/Prizes

• Weekly/Monthly/Yearly

Each “fix” is only part of the solution. To be successful, many things have to be in place, including:

• Connections with community service agencies to meet health and welfare needs

• Transportation for homeless students

• Safe classrooms with meaningful learning activities

And more….

o This is your workgroup.

o The support and resources we have are ours to use as we wish.

o This is not competitive nor judgmental.

o We are in the room to help each other to help our youth.

o The only requirements are that we commit to using:

• Data

• Continuous Improvement

o Trust matters

How an Action Team Works

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

Agree on a charter (how often to meet, process, use of data, use of continuous improvement, outcomes and indicators)

Prepare data (what data do we need? What data can you offer?)

Determine outcomes and indicators based on data

Discuss roles in achieving outcomes and indicators

Determine new data needs

Discuss community outreach/support for outcomes and indicators

Take action!
