Dear Students and Parents of MYP Students,
Students continuing through the MYP will be assigned a book to read in Spanish this summer. The main
purpose of this assignment is to give students the opportunity to keep their Spanish fresh over the long
break. These books should not be a great burden on your free time; they are short and are written in
simplified Spanish. (The idea of a graded reader is to provide you with reading material that uses a
limited range of vocabulary and grammatical structures based on your level of proficiency.) Reading in
Spanish is a great way for you to expand your vocabulary in a natural way, just as it is in your first
language, and review the grammatical structures you have learned.
Upon your return in the 2015/16 academic year, you will be expected to have read and understood the
book corresponding to your level. You can expect to take a reading comprehension test, and you should
be prepared to participate in class discussions about your book in Spanish. The discussions will focus on
basic information, such as the plot and the main characters.
Please find below the minimum requirement according to your level. Our library has other books
available of a similar level; you should feel free to read as many additional books as you want.
If you have completed phase 1 you will read:
- Pobre Ana by Blaine Ray
If you have completed phase 2 you will read:
- El viaje de su vida by Lisa Ray and Blaine Ray
If you have completed phase 3 you will read:
- Pobre Ana bailó tango by Patricia Verano, Verónica Moscoso and Blaine Ray
We have many copies of these books available for you in the library, but if you wish to purchase your

Language A Summer Reading

STUDENTS ENTERING 9TH GRADE
In preparation for 9th grade English, I am requesting that you read one medium-length novel
this summer. It is:
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
I am NOT assigning a written project; my goal is mostly for you to read for pleasure. If you really
like this book, Uglies is the first of a series of four books (Pretties and Specials are excellent;
Extras seems like more of an afterthought.) When you return in the fall, we will have a simple,
multiple-choice test on the book, just to check that you read and understood. We will then use
this novel as part of our first literary unit comparing and contrasting literary works which are
futuristic dystopias (like The Hunger Games).

PGIA Summer 2015 Math Work for Rising 9th Graders Congratulations on completing the 8th grade, and welcome to the MYP 4 at Peter Gruber International Academy! While we want you to rest and relax during the summer, we also want to make sure you don’t forget material you learned in math class this year. In September 2015, all 9th graders (that’ll be YOU!) will be given a benchmark test to determine your current understanding of mathematics concepts. This will count as a formative assessment. This benchmark assessment is given to help your math teacher understand your areas of strength and areas in which you will need to focus during your 9th grade year. With all of this in mind, we would like for you to complete work on Khan Academy this summer. The re-designed free tutoring service is even better than before. Follow the specific directions below and complete all skills in your specific course. Pace yourself throughout the summer. Your progress will be monitored. You may contact Mrs. Elger at [email protected] with any questions throughout the summer, but please allow up to one week for a response as her access to email is limited during the summer. Go math!

1. Log into Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org). You will see the following screen:
2. Click on Start learning now and sign-in with your school Google email account information. If you do not know your account information or do not have a Google account, click Sign in with Google and click Create Account. Either of these will allow you to save what you have completed.
3. Click on Coaches, and enter 6JBZSK under “Add a coach. Enter a class code or
your coach/teacher’s email address.” Click Join the class after entering 6JBZSK. You will receive a message that says, “You successfully joined the class.”
4. Click on the green bell logo to the left of your name at the top of the screen.
5. The first notification should read, “Your coach Elizabeth Elger recommended the mission 8TH grade (U.S.) for you.” Click on Start this mission.
6. You will be asked to complete the “Mission warm-up.” Click on Get Started. This short diagnostic quiz will help guide the rest of your work. After completing 6 questions, you will be directed to complete skills at your appropriate level. Complete all assigned tasks!
