Reflection

I have been with Argosy for nearly two years and have gained great insight into myself and also into the academic realm that I continue for pursue. I have met many brilliant people and have experience Professors from all walks of life. Through different pursuits, we are all joined together in a brief moment, or 8 weeks, of time. We learn about each other’s strengths and weaknesses and gather friends and collaborators along the way.

In regards to my strengths and weaknesses, my SSAL has provided insight into the depth of work that I have been able to accomplish in my undergraduate. My cognitive and critical thinking skills have allowed me to develop a hypothesized paper outlining the effects of chronic illnesses on the likelihood of depression in adolescents. I have learned how to formulate reasoning and opinions on subjects that I have learned more about and increased my learning. I have also learned how to better collect and arrange information to create a solid presentation. I learned how to properly research and develop a hypothesis and formulate the necessary criteria needed to support my hypothesis. I have also gained insight into my communication skills and how I can better communicate with my peers, counselors, children and those I interact with on a daily basis. I have learned the importance of the APA Ethical Guidelines and what it means to uphold the greatest integrity in what I do and how I treat those around me. I have learned about diversity, culture and disabilities, and the impact that society plays on individuals from all walks of life.

Through each piece of these, I have been able to more greatly develop who I currently am, and who I continue to strive to be in my future endeavors and continued academic success.

AbstractEvery year there are thousands of children diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S. (American Diabetes Association, 2009). Children can be diagnosed at a very young age and after having diabetes for several years, may begin to exhibit signs of depression and anxiety over the fact that they have to deal with this disease for the rest of their lives. The DAISY research (Depression and Anxiety In Specified Youth) will be researching the question “Does depression affect a majority of children with type 1 diabetes as they reach adolescence?”

AbstractManaging stress is about a multitude of things which include taking care of yourself and taking charge of your emotions, thoughts, environment and how you handle problems (Helpguide, 2009). Therefore, it is important to understand how women, in particular deal with stressors and their environment and what impact childbearing has on these issues. Many people believe that the natural place for a woman is in the home (Argosy Online, 2009). Trying to steer from this concept and incorporate the idea of women in a full time work environment is not only a guided misperception of men, but also of women. Often times women are torn when returning to the workforce and feel obligated to remain at home raising the children and maintaining the homefront. However, due to the financial constrictions that many families deal with, it is unlikely and unrealistic that all women are able to stay at home after child birth to raise the children.

AbstractA person’s greatest source of support comes from their friends and family and it is important that Amy and her mother are in agreement, though ultimately it would be Amy’s decision as to whether or not to marry (Argosy Online, 2009). Amy’s mother seems to have her best interests in mind, but is also her mother and can be protective of her daughter. Amy’s mother also sees the day to day struggles and challenges that Amy faces, and can understand the amount of responsibility it takes to run a house and to be married, file taxes, pay the bills. Amy’s mother is correct in trying to influence her decision, simply because she knows the amount of responsibility that being married and living with someone means, not to mention the social challenges that Amy and her husband would face.

AbstractThe APA Ethical Codes are similar to the ACA in that they specifically state thatpsychologists are allowed to provide services only in the areas in which they have been trained and are within the boundaries of their competence, based on education, training, supervision and professional experience (APA 2.01, 2002). It is important to note that both guidelines specifically mention that the counselors need to not only have training in these fields but also supervised training and experience.

With healthcare and chronic illnesses also comes the need for education within the scope of treatment. It is important to teach families how to get access to the medications that they require and to provide tools for them to obtain necessary information and supplies in order to help better manager their or their child’s diabetes. Through educational programs and medication programs specific to diabetes we can teach patients how to better manage their risk for complications such as cardiovascular disease and diabetic retinopathy. We need to look beyond the direct need of healthcare and look deeper into the scope of providing tools and resources.

The Health Systems Management and Policy program will provide a strong background on the fiscal management and administration of public and private health sectors. This will provide not only resources for my current position but will also provide new opportunities for academic, research and professional growth. It is an important factor in the administration of grants and awards and an important aspect of administration includes not only the fiscal responsibilities but also includes the management of individuals and teams related to new research and ongoing collaborative projects.

My Future in Learning

Learning is a lifelong process. How do you envision your future as a lifelong learner?

I used to always want to be done with schooling as quickly as possible. I took as many classes at once as I could handle just to get through and be done. I’ve learned over the past several years though, that learning is a continued and life-long process and one that I have grown to enjoy immensely. There is no shortage of routes to take when it comes to education, and every chance I have to better myself and the world around me, is one that I am going to take.
