Municipal Oval 1927-1931R E S T iu peacc, old boy. Twu were a great guy—while

you had it. -- 1 7 -When eventually the parl( plans have heencarned

out, and a shawl of green grass has been raised over home plate and second hfiic and center field, and the places where the goal posts stoixt, <xtid mothers roil baby carnages along the cement wiil(s that will stripe your rmd section, remember you were used jor more manly pursuits— once.

W e ll be referring to you soon as, "That was at old Municipal Oval—-you. know, where the park, is now. A ball field used hi he there. Honest.

Baseball and joothall they played all over you, and you never protested, except; maybe, where yotl san/( in spots. But- with parts of old automobiles and tin cam as your foundation, what could we except, eh?

Ton were a great guy. Municipal Oval, even if you were as hold as a baseball hat always. -7 '

The high school’s 192S (ixrtbitll team played a couple of interesting games at the oval.

Ramsey came to town with an egg named Rockerfeller- in the baekfield, a big bruising player who packed all of his science, speed and cunning in his broad, wide shoulders and coal chute legs. The high schoolers had not been stopped, and with Lar- ropin’ Lou Crupi- and ltuu Mike DeRenus working with the aid of Robert the Pattison and James Lothian behind a' big line, there did not seern to Tnr ffitioh chance of stopping them.

The game was played on a Friday afternoon and, ere the night had fallen Lyndhurst had been tied. A couple of times Lyndhurst in the first half ru hed up tp the scoring line— and fuzled. V *

Once, the team had four downs to get across. Every man in the baekfield had scored but Bob Pattison. Generous Lyndhurst

1. dfiefded nobody but Pattison was going across with the ball. Twice Bob hammered into tk- big Ramsey hne. BrRem a* a battering back, just acted as a blocker. The third down Came up and Lothian decided it was time to shift his plans, Crupi tried a sneak through center and was nailed.

So DrRemis took the kiitfon fimrth down and^plowed through, ending standing up. But Edward (virrnton, later to wreck one of our fire engine', detected RntSSf MatKSH offside and called buck the play. DeRensis couldn't run through the next time and the main scoring threat was stopped, and the game ended evervstephen,——

Dover supplied the action in the other game that comes to mind. Overwhelming favorites, the visitors from upstate couldn’t overcome the^playing nf the Blue and Golders. Finally, Sammy Palumbo wrapped himself around a L:we hall. Lothian fired a

la ss to Grupt whii •tumbled on to the eight yard line. Fromthere Iron Mike lugged the b; tt rlirf'Ugh flir six points. Dover approached a score several ti> l«»t ended a few feet shojyt

! -each time. •* -» ' ;' ; ■. -

Some rawJe daulf baseball teams tramped across the oval, and, with them tramped some o lorful baseballers--the pitchers, Mouse Mileski and Michael McGoy, Charles Christ, the second baseman, Bear Fox, Andy Reno, Les Sheridan, Jimmy Breslin etc. etc. ' * < f |

But when it comes to color several bows must be taken before the throne on which Gharles Lester is lord and master.

You must go Kick to IV2V, in the closing days of the season when James Breslin had worked a little tricky politics into forcing the Columbus ( ’ lub int< a series with the much-despised Young Men's League nine. The league team had played a few teams, not many. With Lester pitching it had lost to the Passaic Clintons—or was u the Rutblatts?

But that first series game and Charley Lester grinning at Lindsey and walking up to the mound to drive the ball into home plate fast and hard, is one to remember.

The Columbus Club batters swung too fast or too slow, never right. Was if fifteen or sixFecfl strikeouts Lester hung up? Anyway, he kwt out by a run or so.

But when you crown your Municipal Oval heroes, toss some of the laurels into Lester's lap; he coludn’t hear very well, but what a thrower lie was!

a s . *Oh, well ii'i H bane trees tnuf grass ami benches

I list one good flint after another for the old oval — though tfs bring turned «i<er for the last lime, now.

Coach Al LaTroniea’* basketball toHgers broke their losing streak Friday night at the e*pen*e of the Dover High tagerx, 29-8, but Ml before the on-»l*ught of the Dumont men Tuesday night at tht High School court, 87-17.

Dumont'* reputed weak aggregation literally ran the local boy* ragged. They went out in the first period and snared an iS-Q lead, ani but for the second f&iod, in which Captain Reiger & Co. piled up 111 point*, were never seriously threat' ejied. l.yndhurst’* spurt in the second session made the score at halt time, 14-12, in favor of the Dumont dan. . ’ _

In the third period, the Up-country boys started the rout again. They tallied 11 points in this period, ani ran up 12 markers in the final, during which 'period they held the locals scoreless.

Howie Hess, the lanky center ihe IJumont array, played the prin opal part in Che victory. He amass-

io point* ani was the pivot man of the attack. -v-

The game .was *!owed-up considerably by the very apparent poor officiating of Flynn. His laxity jn •niorcement, caused the players to plav unusually rough.
