The return of bush and vegetated areas to goat only stations was also highlighted, overturning the old claim that goats destroy the vegetation. Following the morning presentations, a magnificent lunch was presented on the homestead lawns, including roast and curried goat, goat meat pies and concluding with a variety of goat milk cheeses. The lunch was sponsored by Geraldton Meat Exporters, the local goat abattoir who followed up with open inspections during the afternoon. Jeff and Juliana run some 1400 angoras and 450 meat goat breeders along with about 400 sheep. They turn off 200 goats for the meat trade each month, and last year produced 4,500kg of mohair. The property is 1,500 acres with an average annual rainfall of 450mm.

South Australian Division President’s Report to the AGM held 20 August 2006

The past year has seen a continuation of good prices for our mohair. This has resulted in some growers purchasing more animals to increase their clip. One grower from Victoria has set up a feed lot to run wethers. Several others have acquired new properties to run large herds of commercial goats. Our Promotions Officer, Justine Hall, says there has been considerable interest shown in our industry by many attending various shows and field days. Justine has been endeavoring to promote the mohair industry in as many publications as possible. The office in Narrandera seems to be running smoothly. Cheryl and Justine are always pleased to help with any inquiries. The shop has made a nice little profit in the past year. More stock is required. The newsletter is coming out on a regular basis, however I feel more editorial material is needed. So if you have anything to tell or say let the office know. The new format for the Website appears to be working well. Anybody wishing to advertise through this medium (even in the stud directory) should contact the office. Since the last AGM the Board has been meeting regularly via teleconferencing. If any of you wish for more information regarding board activities please feel free to give me a call. As a Board member I do feel some concern that we continue to run at a loss. The Board is trying to rectify this position; it is continuously looking at costs, and at ways of increasing the membership and revenue. The National AGM is to be held in Narrandera in October. The Office is hoping to make this a major annual event. Besides the meeting, there will be trade and animal displays, animals for sale, discussion papers and other festivities. This year it is to be held at the racecourse. I am hoping we may have several new members in SA soon. In the meantime I wish you all well in the coming year and hope to meet up with you all soon. For this day, held on Saturday 19th August 2006 at the property of Bill and Sandie Smith following their shearing, the Hunter Region was fortunate to have the services of shearer and wool classer Ian Howell from Tasmania. In addition to shearing, Ian provided instruction on wigging and crutching, and fleece preparation as well as taking an active part in many general discussions on the mohair industry. Of particular interest the prospective new breeders and growers on the day was the opportunity to see a standard sequence of events in a shearing shed at shearing time; penning of animals; catching; shearing; release into counting out pen; pick up fleece; weighing; skirting and classing.

As a flow on from shearing visitors saw hoof trimming and vaccinating, being the normal sequence during shearing in this particular shed. Additional demonstrations and instructions were provided on other activities such as drenching and tattooing. A more unusual addition to this type of day was demonstrations by Region members of carding and spinning with a small display of products, including commercially woven. Though of the cottage industry type these demonstrations provided a token reminder of the process from fleece to woven product, and in doing so created a great deal of interest. A major feature of the day was the ready flow of questions and answers indicating the high level of interest by the 20 who attended. This led to the suggestion that perhaps it would be worth staging such open days on a more regular basis.

Summary, President’s Report -- NSW Division Annual General Meeting 5th August 2006

Once again welcome to our NSW Division Annual General Meeting. The year now behind us has certainly challenged the strength and resolve of our members and all of those in the mohair industry. With such a large proportion of NSW still drought declared and concerns as to when sustained relief can be expected, it is fortunate that mohair prices, though steadied, are still holding well. Many developments are either here or in progress probably the most recent being the release of the best practice manual “Going into Goats” with all States conducting a launch. Each launch and the June News Sheet “full frontal” has, unfortunately, been no more than a bitter reminder of the promotional opportunity that the mohair industry has lost; this loss due to our failure to secure a significant mohair industry component in the manual. At the very least efforts must continue to ensure a module is included in the near future that will truly and specifically serve the mohair industry. The NSW Division afforded Stephen Chaffey the opportunity of presenting prototype software to assist with his development of this program. Designed to assist individuals to test and learn about aspects of their angora enterprise, this viewing developed into a most interesting interchange of ideas of help to both Stephen and all involved. The NSW Division continues to enjoy the support of it’s Regions, with delegates and elected members holding meetings November, January, May and August. Division events such as the NATS show and sale as well as the Region’s own area events make up the Division as a whole. The National Angora Trophy Show and Sale, NATS was again very successful, exhibitors enjoying the services of judge Reinhold du Randt from South Africa. Again, full credit must go to the NATS Committee for it’s efforts, but in particular to Nick Gorrie our NATS Coordinator

Many ideas, some new, many not so new, regarding a venue and/or format change for the NATS, resulted in extensive research and discussion earlier this year. The NSW Division finally decided that the best interests of the members would be served by ensuring the current success of the NATS. To do this the event would continue with essentially the same format and as a stand alone event at the same venue. The National Angora Trophy Show and Sale for 2007 will be held at Goulburn Showground in early March; same basic format; 2nd, 3rd and 4th March 2007; Nick Gorrie as Coordinator with the full support of the NSW Division and NATS Committee. The past commitment to Junior Judging will continue as an important component of the event. The NSW Judging Forum, held in July at the Cowra property of John and Janet Leigh, saw many topics discussed ranging from current Judging Guidelines and Breed Standard, to questions of actual judging procedures and protocol. It became quite clear that participants considered it essential that the show scene should not foster a special show breed but should encourage the breeding of animals suitable for commercial production of mohair. With the agricultural shows still a good window into the mohair industry we must continue to assist our Regions with their local events. All levels of our organization will need to continue there efforts with the many ongoing issues, but above all, the acceptance of mohair production as a viable income source must remain a prime concern. Finally I take this opportunity to thank all those that have supported me and the Division Executive throughout the year. Bill Smith President, NSW Division Executive

President’s Report: NSW South East Region 16th July 2006

It’s great to be able to say the last mohair sale was still good, with the Mohair prices holding up, in fact an over all average of $14.76 it was 75c up on the last NMP sale. With Cots up to $18.30 and LSTN 11.80 everybody should have well and truly cleared out all their so called rubbish from its hid-ing places. The only disappointment was that the 21.5 mic bale was not heavy enough to attract a premium, we need more contributors. The shows have come and gone, with Debbie Scattergood once again taking home most of the broad ribbons in fact with the help of a champion fleece from Rivers our region just about scooped

There has been much discussion about the NATS, with some thoughts of combining with the Australasian to create one big super elite show a year and thus save much Money and Energy. This year we plan to have our AGM at Charlie & Sue Bell‘s new farm at Candelo where we can also welcome some new members Tom and Barb Mitchell and Toms brother Ray and his wife Mary Anne. Unfortunately at the same time we say good bye to David and Jenny Findlay as far as Mohair pro-duction goes, but they are still flat out value adding and selling their Mogear. Dr Bruce McGregor has very kindly found time in his extremely busy schedule to come and update us regarding his latest work in his field of expertise, Goats and Fibre! He has listed Supplementary Feeding, Variation of Micron on the body, Shearing and Marketing quality Mo-hair, but any question you need answered, Bruce is the one to ask. VALE

ELWIN JOHN WEBBER

23.04.1933 - 8.08.2006

It is with much sadness that we farewell Elwin Webber, who passed away on Tuesday 8th August, 2006 at his home in Vacy, NSW Hunter. Elwin, and wife Pat, have been breeding angora goats as members of AMBA/Mohair Australia, Hunter Region since 1988. His Region involvement has been a family affair with Pat, granddaughter Lauren, daughter Jeanette and son-in-law Bill as constant assistants at all Region events. Elwin has been Show Coordinator for the Region since 1994.

The Angora Goat section of Gresford Show continues as one of the few remaining Hunter shows solely due to the constant efforts of Elwin as Steward, his driving force, with the enthusiastic help of his family. Elwin’s prominence as breeder, steward, helper and enthusiastic exhibitor will be sadly missed by us all in Mohair Australia - Hunter Region. We extend our love and sincerest sympathy to his wife Pat, and their family.

Prices Down at the Cape In the first of sale of the Winter period in South Africa, some downward pressure on prices was experienced, as expected. Prices for similar types across the board, decreased in comparison to the final summer sale of 2006, but remained well above the prices of the corresponding sale of the 2005 winter season. The average price for this sale was R70,15 (A$13.24)/kg. Despite the lower prices, a sale's clearance of 97 percent was achieved, which compared well with the previous season. Bearing in mind that this is the off-season for mohair in the Northern Hemisphere and a measure of exchange rate instability, the prices achieved were still highly favourable for mohair growers. Total offering 105,205kgs. Sale date 15 August 2006. (Source Mohair Sth Africa website)

Livestock parasite project collaboration approved by Meat & Livestock Australia

A promising collaborative research project investigating novel compounds to control livestock parasites has been approved by Meat & Livestock Australia through the Partners in Innovation Program.

The research project was developed and is managed by Genetic Technologies, an Australian biotechnology company specialising in genetics.

MLA invests Federal Government research and development funds through the Partners in Innovation program to match contributions by companies to undertake projects that have a benefit to the Australian red meat industry.

Genetic Technologies Chief Scientific Officer, Dr Gary Cobon, says the project is using innovative genetic technologies to find new treatments to control disease-causing parasites. “Parasites of livestock and other animals are a major cause of disease globally and the financial losses they cause are significant,” says Dr Cobon. “Parasitic infestation of sheep and cattle is estimated to cost Australian producers approximately $1 billion annually,” says Dr Joan Lloyd, Acting Program Manager Environment, Animal Health and Welfare at MLA.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Genetic Technologies to search for novel treatments that may reduce this cost to Australian producers. This project is an extension of one of nine projects funded through a joint Meat & Livestock Australia - Australian Wool Innovation initiative to search for new anthelmintics for sheep. Many parasites are developing resistance to these currently used chemicals, rendering them ineffective.

Continued...

The next stage of the project is to test the com-pounds under trial conditions. This exciting re-search has the potential to deliver new methods to control parasites of the world’s livestock.

Genetic Technologies intends to commence ne-gotiations with a number of large livestock phar-maceutical companies with a view to marketing products from the project. President’s Report to Vic Division AGM 13 August 2006 It is with great pleasure that I present my first annual report as president of this division. As you are aware the Victorian Division has the second largest number of members in Australia. Membership in all categories is second only to NSW and Victoria has four active regions. It is a credit to those members who have made this year such a success and I thank you for all your efforts. This year has been a busy and productive one commencing with the Annual General Meeting of Mohair Australia held in November 2005 for the first time at Narrandera, since our Office and Shop was opened there in October 2004. At the Board meeting that followed the AGM I was elected National President of Mohair Australia. I wish to record my thanks to Geoffrey Pfitzner, my predecessor, for the time he dedicated to the roles of President of this Division and as National President. While there has been good coverage in the media and the News Sheet produced by our head office, of the numerous events that have occurred in this state throughout the year, I would like to list the significant events I attended. The 2005 year ended with the East Central Region Christmas party held at Hilary and Arthur Day’s home where the hospitality was fantastic and the function raised $300.00 for regional funds. Thank you Hilary and Arthur. The Australasian Show and Sale at Seymour in February 2006 was again well supported and provided a great venue to show not only other angora producers, but the general public, some of the best angoras Australia produces. The judge, Pierre van der Vyvver, from South Africa, was certainly impressed with the standard of animal he was offered to judge. During Pierre’s two day stop over in Victoria he came home to Seaspray for one day before joining Arthur and Hilary Day and David and Wilma Williams for dinner the night before he left to return to South Africa. May I extend my sincere thanks to the exhibitors and all of the people who made that event happen and the associated social events so enjoyable. The promotional value of the speaker at the Telstra Lecture theatre resulted in several new entrants in the industry following Seymour. Later in February I attended the Benalla All Breeds Goat Sale conducted by North eastern Region, thanks to all of the region members for your efforts. The inaugural sale at the Pakenham Livestock Exchange at the end of February was also a great success with 200 goats being sold and the agents are keen to conduct another one before Christmas and of course the Liddys and Rowena Doyle had their annual sale of all breeds at Horsham which was great. May saw the East Central Region supporting the Lang Lang Small Farming Victoria Field Day prior to their bus trip that visited 5 different properties. Many thanks to Sue Oldfield, David and Michaela Holroyd, and Rowena Doyle, Bob and June Liddy, Stuart and Loretta Chance and Keith and Licia Kokocinski for their hospitality. The Victorian Launch of the “Going Into Goats” (GIG) best practice manual was conducted by a network committee and I participated in the initial planning meeting held at the VFF to arrange the launch. The launch has been well covered in the media and it is great to have this manual to use as reference material at mohair promotional events. It was prepared by producers who have experience in running goats and we hope to have a mohair module developed to add to the manual. The loose leaf folder is designed to have extra modules added as they become available. I believe the Dairy and Cashmere Organisations are also considering the development of a module for their respective industries. In the meantime the “what do I need to consider and know if considering running any breed of goat in an intensive or extensive management system and in my particular climatic condition” is available and there is extensive references to other sources of information on specific issues. You will be able to ask questions about the manual at the AGM

in Narrandera. The RIRDC funded report “Towards a perfect angora goat enterprise” - testing management strategies and financial feasibility of angora goats for production of mohair and meat by Stephen Chaffey is now available and can be used in conjunction with the GIG. The ASBA show held at Bendigo during July was also a great event that placed our industry on show to the sheep producers and public. Once again the appraisal class demonstrated the returns a producer can receive from running angora goats. These returns are the envy of many wool producers. Congratulations to all exhibitors with special reference to the students from Elisabeth Murdoch College who exhibited angoras for the first time. Also a big thank you to Pat Gill and her team for such a well run show. I would also like to make mention to the fantastic Trade stands at Bendigo by Lara Downs and Sylvania Park promoting Mohair products and including entries in the fashion parade. One unfortunate event I attended was the funeral of Lloyd Reynoldson, well known by most Victorian angora breeders, the family’s great contribution to the industry involvements with the Trutex Angora Stud. Our condolences were expressed to Sally and the other members of the family. With the seasonal condition on the improve in some areas of the state and the fact that our industry promotion in articles such as the one produced by the Weekly Times insert “Farm” featuring Laurel Shera-Jones have resulted in orders being placed for angoras following this year’s kid drop. Angoras does and wethers are not being sold for slaughter until they are cast for age which is a great turn around. In conclusion I wish to thank the hard working members of the executive of the division and the other members who have been co-opted to help throughout the year, Pat Gill, Rhonda Ward, Tom Harmsworth, Rowena Doyle and Lesley Stuart. Also I would like to express my sincere thanks to Tom Harmsworth for his wise council throughout the year as the Victorian representative on the Board. His vast experience has been a great help. In completing my President’s Report I would like to make mention to congratulate all Victorian members especially Mallee Park for the success they achieved at the Australasian. Also we rean a very, very successful Television advertisement on 37 fifteen second adverts to come and see angora goats at the Seymour Expo. At times the marquee was packed and we had over 50 enquiries over the weekend about running angora goats. In closing I look forward to another great year for the industry and the development of a promotional campaign in the state at selected events and at producer training functions like the Judges School in November and other special events. Doug Nicholls Victorian President.

ASBA Show 2005 at Bendigo was just one of the events reported on by Victorian President Doug Nicholls in his report to the 2006 AGM. Photos above show the marquee at this event, Tom and Joan Harmsworth, and Judge and Stewards on the day.

Goats and the LPA Programme

(Extracted from “Goats on the Move” MLA quarterly newsletter.)

The number of goat producing properties registered on the LPA database continues to grow. MLA’s Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) is an on-farm food safety certification program designed to help the red meat industry strengthen the food safety systems cur-rently in place.

LPA provides a set of guidelines and a revised National Vendor Declaration (NVD) to help producers declare the food safety status of their livestock. LPA guidelines present produc-ers with very basic animal production and record keeping requirements designed to en-sure the production of safe food. In many cases producers will not need to change their on-farm management practices. Independent audits will be conducted to ensure the pro-gram’s integrity is maintained.

Below is the current break-up of goat properties on the LPA database. The total number nationally is currently 5,595 properties:

Goats All States 5,595 ACT 5 NSW 2,238 NT 0 QLD 1,586 SA 472 TAS 49 VIC 670 WA 575

Goat NVD orders are also increasing across Australia per month. This reflects the increas-ing demand for NVDs by buyers in the processing sector and livestock traders.

LPA will be work to address several issues during 2006/07:

• Research goat specific PIC audit results to identify industry specific issues

• Implement goat specific communication activities in conjunction with other events such as the Going into goats state launches and forums

• Adapting Level 2 for the goat industry

For further information on NVDs and the LPA program visit www.mla.com.au/lqs

Refer Page 9 of the July News Sheet…..

Goats in South Australia….. …...defined as ‘related’ to cattle….

Further to the article in last month’s News Sheet we can now expand on this issue. In the Associated Regulations included in the South Australian Legislation which relates to the use of veteri-nary chemicals it states: 31 Related species of animals For the purposes of section 14(2)(a)(ii)(C) of the Act (a) cattle are declared to be related to buffalo, goats and deer; and (b) chickens are declared to be related to ducks, geese, Guinea fowl, pheasants, quails, pigeons and turkeys; and (c) alpacas, camels and llamas are declared to be related to each other; and (d) horses, donkeys and mules are declared to be related to each other; and (e) kangaroos and wallabies are declared to be related to each other. While the Act in South Australia does declare that cattle are related to goats, and you cannot be prosecuted in South Australia for using cattle products as off label veterinary chemicals for goats, this does not apply in other states. BUT and MOST IMPORTANTLY... If the product is not registered for use in goats and has no known withholding period (WHP) a producer cannot complete a vendor declaration (Question 3) accurately relating to WHP’s if the animal is sold into the meat trade in particular. LPA level 2 on-farm quality assurance would prevent this as well. (refer page 15)
