Hecker Quote“The highest aim of humanity is to live for God, and tolabor for the universal welfare of humankind. Nothingless than this can satisfy a person’s noblest instinctsand fill that person’s large heart. The human minddemands to know universal truth; the heart cravesuniversal love; the will demands to act for universalends.”From The Paulist Prayer Book

How much do you know about Paulist history? Whatdoes it mean to be a Paulist parish? Why do you attendSt. Philip Neri?

Pastoral CornerI’d like to give an update on my missionary activity. To me, being a missionary means that you join people in whatthey love to do and you learn about their lives. It means going where their creativity takes them. On Friday night Iwent to Kell’s Irish Pub on SW Third, near Burnside. Great Irish music, the pub was jammed. Lots of Catholics, Isuspect. I chatted with a young man for awhile and then turned to see a young lady leading her boyfriend to thestage. He was dragging a ball and chain! There was a big heavy bowling ball connected to a chain, connected tohis ankle. I said to my friend, “what is this???” He said “Can’t you tell? They’re getting married!”

This past week I stumbled into Eugenio’s on Division St. On Wednesday nights they have open mike. I waswearing my clerical collar, as I usually do, and was introduced by Steve, who’s in charge of the acts, to the peoplepresent, as the new priest at St. Philip’s. Steve is the gatekeeper to the microphone. People tell me he goes bythe nickname “Pearly.” I told him he was the “pearly gate” to the microphone. He told me that was a newone! After a number of acts finally a jam session began to take shape. People with various instruments beganjoining the act on stage. They began singing Beatles songs, so I went up and joined them in singing. Afterwards anumber of people said to me they were glad I was there, that having a priest in the house made them feel good. They started talking about Pope Francis and how much they love him.

On Sunday I went to the “Sundae - Portland's Ultimate Summertime Patio Party.” It was performance DJ’s and alot of people out on the back patio of East Bank Saloon on Grand Ave. D.J. Wicked had pulled together several DJ’sand about 100 people. He promotes a welcoming atmosphere. No bad lyrics about women or cops or drugs. (Hismother was helping to run the event, and she said the name D.J. Wicked doesn’t quite do him justice.) The crowdwas mixed, Afro/Anglo/Latino/Asian. They were giving out free ice cream. There was a great vibe and everyonewas swaying to the music. Then the dance floor cleared off and individuals went to the center of the floor to struttheir stuff. They took turns, so I decided to take a turn also. I threw down a few break dance moves I’ve learnedover the years. Lots of cheering ensued. People came up to me and said how glad they were a priest had come. Igave out two of my cards upon request. Several wanted to take photos with me. I can just see these photos goingout on Facebook.... Social networking is key to connecting with the young adult crowd. One thing that amazes meis that people react so positively to the clerical collar. It’s a powerful symbol. Whether that translates into churchattendance, it’s way too early to know. The important thing is to find people in their natural habitats and affirmthem for their gifts. Fr. Bill Edens
