LAGNIAPPE Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time,

August 10, 2014

Page 2: August 10 2014 original

Dear Friends, We are back into the first full week of School. So, welcome back everyone! Blessings on the new year. This week begins the Bible Time Line Course. This is being offered as many have asked for a Bible Study that provides an overall view of the Bible. Here is the chance to enter into this journey of learning over the next months. Knowing more about the facts of the Bible is a helpful enterprise. Moving beyond this informational stage can free a person to then use the Bible as the prayer-tool that it is. To, in a sense, let the Bible interpret your own life. This is what happens within you when you hear the Scriptures, listen to a homily and go away struck by an insight. You were at that moment the fertile soil in which the seed of the Word of God is being planted. One of the yearly offerings the parish presents is the Just Faith program. This course provides connections between Catholic teachings and life-particularly Catholic Social Justice teachings. Over the years our parish has had many graduates of the program who are changed because of what they have come to know. This weekend someone from the Just Faith course will briefly invite you to consider participating. One of the Holy Days of Obligation will happen this coming week on Friday, August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Our usual holy day schedule will be offered: 6;15am, 8:00am, 6:30pm. We remember Mary’s Assumption into heaven after her death. Our prayer is that we may be allowed to follow her example of holiness so as to gain the grace of heaven. Please come and offer yourself to the Lord on this Feast day and bring your children. The Christ Renews His Parish Retreat is coming on the weekend of August 23rd. Its not too late to register. Call the parish office. I hope your August week goes well. Love,

ST JEAN VIANNEY CAPITAL CAMPAIGN “Our Time to Pray, Our Time to Give”

A MATCHING GIFT There are parishioners who work for businesses which will sometimes MATCH a charitable donation to a Church or School. Is your employer one of those people? If so, your gift to the Capital Campaign could be matched. Sometimes, the employer will match a gift to a SCHOOL but not a CHURCH. Regardless of the case, we can help you find out if your employer will match your gift. Talk to Fr. Tom or Debbie Curole at the parish office, 753.7950 so we can help you help us.

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one: To the Barbre and Ullo families on the

death of their loved one, Chester Bellard. To the family of Pat Guidry on the death of her

mother.

LIFE TOGETHER

The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation

Imagine how our parish would change if all of us had a profound encounter with God in Scripture. The Bible is at the heart of everything we do and believe as Catholics. A good Bible study has a way of renewing parish life, and enriching the faith of parishioners. The Bible Timeline is a fascinating study that takes you on a journey through the entire Bible. You will go deep into each period of salvation history and discover the amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture. Using a unique color-coded system, you will learn the major people, places, and events of the Bible and see how together they form the foundation of our faith. Join us for The Bible Timeline bible study at St. Jean Vianney beginning August 13, 2014 at 6:30 to 8:30pm and continuing for 23 classes – ending on March 25, 2015. Think about it, pray about it and we hope you will join us. Call the Parish Office to register (753.7950).

ADORATION “NOT JUST ANOTHER MEETING”

All are invited on Tuesdays to continue their worship and love of God at adoration. It is a visit, not a meeting. A visit of ‘love to love’. Bring whatever is in your heart and soul and leave it at the feet of the Lord for HE will be at yours. “Adoration for the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth”. -Mother Theresa Join us every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm for Eucharistic Adoration. Taking special time with our Lord is a great way to grow closer to Him.

St. Jean Vianney Social Responsibility News

In 1980 our Parish adopted the Mission of Batahola Norte in Nicaragua. Since then, we have been supporting the mission financially and with donations of school uniforms. Two of our parishioners, Virginia Serio and Anna Vanhaverbeke, were appointed to the Friends of Batahola Board of Directors last year and provide our link to the Board and to the Center. Currently the Center serves around 3000 people from the community through over 20 educational classes. Through these classes, students discover their personal strengths and create better lives for themselves and their families. Children at all grade levels maintain grade averages above 80% and show positive changes in their self-esteem and confidence. Adult women gain basic literacy, vocational, and artistic skills, as well as parenting skills. Community members participate in a violence prevention campaign and have learned about Nicaragua’s new laws against domestic violence. The second collection the weekend of August 16 & 17 will support this Mission. Please consider helping out by bringing your donation to Mass or sending it to the Church Office.

Attention Men of SJV

CRHP is a retreat offered on the beautifully shaded grounds and buildings of our campus. The retreat is offered by CRHP alumni, and they have worked many months to make this a wonderfully personal and prayerful way to reflect on God’s presence in our lives.
