The stair railing, also called a handrail, is an important element as far as safety is concerned. Elderly people always use it to keep their balance and a handrail can stop someone from falling when making a false step or if the stairs are slippery.

The stair railing is simply a piece of wood (or other material) which is fixed to the side of a staircase and which follows the slope of the stairs in order to hold on to it for support. It can be as big as the handle of a spade or bigger as is often the case with banisters for stone staircases.

Normally, a stair railing is at a height of 1 or 1.25 m (3 or 4 ft) from the stairs in order to be able to hold on to it easily. Some rails are made to measure. However, it is possible to find wooden handrails of standard lengths.

Frequently, mezzanines which can be found inside homes are fitted with a railing around the edge of the balcony. This often continues on to become the handrail for the staircase. Naturally, the rail must be sufficiently strong to allow users to pull or push on it while walking up or down the stairs without it coming away from the wall. So it cannot be installed with anchors in drywall, for example. It must be attached solidly to the wall studs of the house’s frame.

Mouldings and other architectural decorations are one of the easiest ways of giving a finishing touch to the outside of a house. Available in a huge choice of models, colours and materials, these architectural features are usually placed around doors and windows. Architectural mouldings can also be used to embellish the cornice and at the same time camouflage the fascias of a house. The supporting features of a house can serve to hold some architectural elements adding a decorative touch at the same time. They could also be installed on walls, on veranda posts, on mouldings or anywhere else decoration is desired. Gable ornaments are usually adaptable so they can be installed under different pitches and can be cut to fit smaller gables.

As far as arches are concerned, there are so many different models and sizes on the market that the desired curvature can usually be found. They could also be made to measure using a personalized template. Whether they are solely decorative or serve a functional purpose as well, vented panels provide ventilation to the attic while enhancing the appearance of the house. The decoration of the exterior of a house can be given the finishing touch with the addition of round or square columns, fluted or smooth.
