August 2, 2020 Old St. Marys, now in its 186 th year of faith and service to Gods people, and served by the Holy Ghost Fathers since 1893, extends a warm welcome to all! We are so happy to be gathered here worshiping God. Our second collection today is for our Maintenance Fund. We learn in todays Scripture passages from the Prophet Isaiah, Psalm 145, and St. Matthews Gospel how God feeds His people both physically and spiritually. The evangelist St. Matthew tells the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000 — not counting women and children — from only five loaves of bread and two fish. This narrative is proclaimed in all four Gospels and foreshadows the Lords tremendous gift of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. At every Mass, the priest, in the person of Christ, consecrates simple bread and wine into Jesustrue Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. St. Paul, in his Letter to the Roman community, reminds us how inseparable Gods love in Christ Jesus is from us. As disciples, faithful stewards acknowledge Christs love through His Eucharistic gift as the source and summitof our spiritual strength, one that inspires us to evangelize and embrace stewardship as a way of life. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is celebrated at Old St. Marys on the first Wednesday of the month. The next Anointing of the Sick will be THIS Wednesday, August 5 th at 12:45 p.m. Old St. Marys hosts the Tridentine Latin Mass on the first Friday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The next First Friday Tridentine Mass will be THIS Friday, August 7th at 7:00 p.m. and it will be a Requiem Mass for Fr. Wayne Epperley, C.S.Sp. All are welcome!

Old St. Mary’s, now in its 186th year of faith and service to God’s people, and served by the Holy Ghost Fathers since 1893, extends a warm welcome to all! We are so happy to be gathered here worshiping God.

Our second collection today is for our Maintenance Fund. We learn in today’s Scripture passages from the Prophet Isaiah, Psalm 145, and St. Matthew’s Gospel how God feeds His people both physically and spiritually. The evangelist St. Matthew tells the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000 — not counting women and children — from only five loaves of bread and two fish. This narrative is proclaimed in all four Gospels and foreshadows the Lord’s tremendous gift of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. At every Mass, the priest, in the person of Christ, consecrates simple bread and wine into Jesus’ true Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. St. Paul, in his Letter to the Roman community, reminds us how inseparable God’s love in Christ Jesus is from us. As disciples, faithful stewards acknowledge Christ’s love through His Eucharistic gift as the “source and summit” of our spiritual strength, one that inspires us to evangelize and embrace stewardship as a way of life.

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is celebrated at Old St. Mary’s on the first Wednesday of the month. The next Anointing of the Sick will be THIS Wednesday, August 5th at 12:45 p.m.

Old St. Mary’s hosts the Tridentine Latin Mass on the first Friday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The next First Friday Tridentine Mass will be THIS Friday, August 7th at 7:00 p.m. and it will be a Requiem Mass for Fr. Wayne Epperley, C.S.Sp.

All are welcome!

Election Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, You told us to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. Enlighten the minds of our people in America. May we choose a President of the United States, and other government officials, according to Your Divine Will. Give our citizens the courage to choose leaders of our nation who respect the sanctity of unborn human life, the sanctity of marriage, the sanctity of marital relations, the sanctity of the family, and the sanctity of the aging. Grant us the wisdom to give You, what belongs to You, our God. If we do this, as a nation, we are confident You will give us an abundance of Your blessings through our elected leaders. Amen.

BAPTISMS

Call the Parish Office to make arrangements.

Dear parishioners of Old St. Mary’s, First, allow us to extend our deepest sympathies on the passing of your beloved pastor, Fr. Wayne Epperley. Fr. Epperley was always so pleasant to work with and supportive of priestly fraternity among the pastors of the Renaissance Vicariate. We continue to pray for you all who mourn hissloss but are confident in the great hope given us by our loving and merciful God. We write today as the Bishop of the Central Region and the Vicar of the Renaissance Vicariate to which Old St. Mary’s belongs, to assure you not only of our prayers during this time, but also to address some of the confusion brought about by the recent announcement from Archbishop Vigneron regarding Families of Parishes. Compounded with Fr. Epperley’s death and the global pandemic, we recognize that these have been particularly trying times for your parish community. We want to assure you that we are here to help you through this process and offer any support that we are able. In speaking with your parish council president, Dr. Michelle Pierron and Operations Manager, Randy Bowers, we thought that it would be best for us to address some of the frequently asked questions regarding what the family model might mean for Old St. Mary’s. At this point, some of the details are still being discerned in working groups comprised of clergy and laity, but we would like to share some of the definitive points that might help to clear up some of the confusion.

On identity and finances - First, the family model allows for each parish to maintain its identity. That is, Old St. Mary’s will continue to be known as Old St. Mary’s. The finances of the parish remain those of the parish with its own Finance Council members as prescribed by Canon Law. The parish will continue to have an advisory council to the pastor whether it be known as it is as a Parish Pastoral Council or by another name.

Deciding on a family - Under the direction of the Vicar, each pastor is currently working with the leadership of his parish to discern to what family the parish might best fit. Included in this discernment are common ministries, parish boundaries, and liturgical styles to name a few. The intention is that all parishes will join a Family of Parishes. In other dioceses, some very large parishes are not part of Families. While that may also be possible in the Archdiocese of Detroit, the discernment and decision will be made by the vicars and Governance Team with attention given to the best interest of each community, with the final decision made by the Archbishop.

Pastoral Leadership - Appointed by Archbishop Vigneron, the Governance and Leadership team is working on different models of leadership from which the pastors of the family may choose. The pastors may elect to name one pastor of each family with the other priests continuing to minister within the family, or the priests may decide that each parish will maintain its pastor with all contributing to the proper functioning of the family. The goal is to establish a new structure that allows for multiple priests to serve the Family of Parishes with their unique talents and experiences, creating a leadership and governance structure that maximizes all our resources for mission.

We know that roles change for many priests. Based on conversations with other dioceses that have adopted similar models, we are confident that the structures adopted for Families of Parishes will make the best use of our priests’ talents and charisms, allowing them to spend more time focusing on the very important work for which they were ordained: less focus on administration and more time ministering to the people of God. While this information is by no means exhaustive, we hope that this note has been of help to you. To get a more comprehensive understanding of Families of Parishes, we invite you to visit www.familiesofparishes.org. The two of us will continue to work together with the leadership of Old St. Mary’s to be sure that your voice is heard during this process of discernment. In Christ, Most Rev. Donald F. Hanchon Moderator, Central Region Rev. Mario V. Amore Vicar, Renaissance Vicariate
