THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT March 27, 2011

While we were still sinners Christ died for us. — Romans 5:8

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — When the people grumbled to Moses for water in the desert, the LORD heard and brought forth water from the rock for all to drink (Exodus 17:3-7). Psalm — If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading — God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-2, 5-8). Gospel — Ask, and you will be given living water so that you will never thirst again (John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]).

THIRST Each time today’s Gospel story is read, I can’t help but think of the many television commercials I’ve seen de-picting perspiring athletes lifting a beverage to their lips while the scorching sun beats down on them. Our culture has definite ideas about how to quench thirst. Today, those ideas are turned upside down. The Sa-maritan woman operates, initially, on the TV commer-cial level. She asks Jesus for the flowing water so that she will not have to keep coming to the well. Jesus then talks about what real thirst is, and how he, and he alone, can quench that thirst. Lent calls us to find those places deep within ourselves where we thirst. In our thirst, as did the Israelites, we cry out to God ask-ing for springs of living water. Deep down we know that only the Lord can satisfy these thirsts.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 2 Kgs 5:1-15b; Lk 4:24-30 Tuesday: Dn 3:25, 34-43; Mt. 18:21-35 Wednesday: Dt 4:1, 5-9; Mt 5:17-19 Thursday: Jer 7:23-28; Lk 11:14-23 Friday: Hos 14:2-10; Mk 12:28-34 Saturday: Hos 6:1-6; Lk 18:9-14 Sunday: 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Ps 23; Eph 5:8-14; Jn 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]

FEAST OF FAITH The Psalms in the Liturgy

The book of Psalms is a prayer book, hymnal, and anthology of verse all rolled into one. It contains one hundred fifty ancient songs—poem-prayers that express the joys and sorrows of the Hebrew people and their longing for God. The psalms are incredibly varied in tone. Some are solemn anthems of praise that once accompanied processions of great multitudes to the temple; others record the lonely cries of a faithful soul who feels abandoned by God. This ancient prayer book of the Hebrew people is our principal prayer book as well. The psalms are everywhere in the liturgy—in the antiphons and accla-mations of the Mass, and most particularly in the re-sponsorial psalm that follows the first reading. The psalm that is sung at Mass usually echoes the themes of the first reading, and sometimes even comments on it. On this Third Sunday of Lent, we listen to the Exo-dus account of the stubbornness of God’s people in the desert, and then the psalm comes to remind us: “If to-day you hear his voice, harden not your hearts” (Psalm 95:8). In their wonderful variety, the psalms teach us how to pray.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: 2 Re 5:1-15b; Lc 4:24-30 Martes: Dn 3:25, 34-43; Mt. 18:21-35 Miércoles: Dt 4:1, 5-9; Mt 5:17-19 Jueves: Jer 7:23-28; Lc 11:14-23 Viernes: Os 14:2-10; Mc 12:28-34 Sábado: Os 6:1-6; Lc 18:9-14 Domingo: 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Sal 23 (22); Ef 5:8-14; Jn 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]
