The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs

Back on March 16 the decision was made to suspend public masses as part of the COVID

protocol. That means Aug 16 will mark five months of battling this virus as a church community!

Although some things appear back to normal in terms of returning to work with many of our

businesses opened back up, many things have also changed. Grandparents have not been able to see

grandchildren. Some families have not been able to visit relatives who are in the at-risk population.

Be aware of the stress on you, your family, and your relationships that these past 120 days have

caused. About one-third of this year has been lived in crisis.

An added challenge has been that the dog days of summer are upon us. It is not easy to find a

good time to be outdoors to relax and recharge. Hopefully you have some way to find balance –

prayer, exercise, friends. It has been a stressful time for all so please be extra patient with your

family, friends and yourself!

Take a moment to see if any unhealthy patterns for dealing with stress have taken hold: too much

computer or TV, stress eating, alcohol. If things seem really dark for you reach out to a clergy

member, a staff member at church, a counselor or a good friend. You don’t have to walk alone!

Many people are available to walk with you. Some work places offer counseling services.

I have been so impressed with our faith community! Whether you choose to come to Holy Mass

or participate on live-stream it is great to see our community persevere in the midst of trial. Your

Faith is inspiring during this time of crisis.

Even though these are challenging times the Lord is with us! He walks alongside us and even

carries us through the most challenging times. Our readings from the Word of God this weekend

give us great hope! “Thus says the Lord: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who

have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink

wine and milk! (Isaiah 55). And Saint Paul asks us today, “What will separate us from the love of

Christ?” “Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the

sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved

us” (Romans 8). We continue to deal with the pandemic one day at a time. When the disciples asked

Jesus how to pray He said, “Give us this day our daily bread.” The Lord will give us enough grace

for the next 24 hours and then there will be grace for a new day. A few reminders:

-The obligation to attend mass in person is lifted through August 31. You may attend in person if you choose or we livestream our daily mass and weekend masses on Facebook.

-This Friday we will offer six hours of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. This is where Jesus is placed on the altar in the Blessed Sacrament for us to adore, pray and bring our needs. We will also offer a 7:00 pm mass on Aug 7.

-St. Francis Xavier Catholic School will be opening on August 10. Please pray for a blessed and peaceful school year.

-Our new Bishop, Stephen Parkes, will be ordained on September 23 in the Cathedral. We are thankful to have a good shepherd!

Let us keep in mind the words of the Psalmist written 1,000 years before Jesus that we proclaim in the Liturgy today: The Psalmist reminds us, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our

needs.”

Isaiah 55:1-3

Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and

eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread;

your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heed-

fully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.

Romans 8: 35, 37-39

Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution,

or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through

him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present

things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate

us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Matthew 14: 13-21

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disci-ples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over—twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

Psalm: The hand of the Lord feeds us, he answers all our needs.

#462 I Heard The Voice of Jesus

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto Me, and rest; Lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon My

breast.” I came to Jesus as I was, Weary, and worn, and sad; I found in Him a resting-place, And He has made me

glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water: thirsty one, Stoop down, and drink, and live. I

came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life-giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in

Him.

#544 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

Joyful, joyful, we adore You, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flow'rs before You, Op'ning to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day!

All Your works with joy surround You, Earth and heav'n reflect Your rays, Stars and angels sing around You,

Center of unbroken praise; Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flow'ry meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird

and flowing fountain Praising you eternally

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10-4.

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry has the following specific needs: Canned fruit,

Canned vegetables like cut green beans and whole kernel corn, Vienna sausage and lunch-

eon meats like Spam are always popular as well as pop-top cans or pouches of tuna fish

and chicken along with microwaveable pasta & meat items. Please think in terms of reg-

ular-size items rather than large or super-size. Pop-top cans and microwaveable items

meet the needs of those we serve who do not have kitchen facilities. BOGO’s are a great

way to buy one for your family and one for our pantry. Basic personal hygiene items for

men and women are always needed.

St. Vincent de Paul ministry has an immediate need for volunteers willing to help in the

thrift store on Wednesdays and Fridays, anytime from 10am - 4pm. Many of our

volunteers are older, or immuno compromised, and they work as they are able. Unfor-

tunately, several of them had to step back this week, so we need people on Wednes-

days and/or Fridays, who are willing to wear a mask, welcome our customers with

open hearts, and help with the register or bagging. We provide masks, gloves, and

hand sanitizer for all our volunteers, if any extras are needed...Volunteers work what-

ever hours work for them. Generally, the store is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and

Fridays (masks required); on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the store is closed, and thor-

oughly cleaned and disinfected.
