AUGUST 2008
There are hundreds, literally thousands, of
unbelievably fit people who make Austin the
fitness capital of Texas. As a magazine, one of our
roles is to single those fit folks out. Every year, we
compile a list of the 10 fittest Austinites by polling
our readers who responded with thousands of
votes cast for their favorites. Our top 10 is simply
the few that have surfaced...and thankfully it just
scratches the surface of how fit our city truly is.

Texas residents know the backbone for keeping skin sun safe can be wearing protective clothing, avoiding rays
during peak hours or smearing on generous amounts of sunscreen. With so many options on today’s skincare
market, one can have difficulty deciding what product suits their lifestyle. The city of Austin gets sun 300 days
out of the year; not to mention our prolonged, humid summer. If you don’t defend your skin from ultraviolet
rays, it can speed up aging, sun spots and cancer risks – just to name a few. Finding the balance between
overexposure and deficiency requires effort, but in the end your skin will thank you.

It’s August In AustIn, and for many of you that
means you’re about to find the answer to a question you’ve been
pondering all year. That’s right, who are AFM’s picks for the 10
fittest people in 2008?
now, I know you’ve probably already jumped ahead to see
the best of Austin’s trim and taut, so I’m not going to pontificate
on their collective buffness. What I did want to explore is what
fitness really means, especially the part that’s not just “skin
deep;” the stuff that our wonderful images can’t entirely convey.
Of course, I always like to start at the beginning; like what does the word fitness really
mean? If you spend any time researching it, you’ll learn there are many aspects of fitness from
“Darwinian fitness” to good old fashion “physical fitness.” And after due consideration, my
view is that in the broadest sense, the word “fitness” projects this notion of “suitability.”
This idea makes a lot of sense to me, especially when we apply that suitability to how we
live our lives. In other words, one’s level of fitness determines their ability to be effective in
living. Of course, different goals require different kinds of fitness — when a pilot must be fit
to fly or a teacher must be certified to be fit to teach, etc. but I digress.
While we can certainly define fitness criteria for specific outcomes, I believe there’s a
foundational fitness upon which all other functional fitness depends. This platform has three
basic legs — physical fitness, mental fitness and emotional/spiritual fitness.
We tend to focus a lot of our attention on physical fitness these days, but all three elements
are crucial to being truly fit for life. Furthermore, it’s very important to keep each of these
pieces in balance. how many times have we seen athletes under-perform or crack under
pressure because they weren’t mentally tough? What about the emotional stamina it takes to be
a caregiver? It’s clearly hard to operate at your peak when any one of the wheels comes off.
This model of fitness also assumes a high degree of integration. That is, each element
supports and catalyzes the others. I believe that people change and sustain behavior for many
reasons, but their motivations seem to arise from these three critical elements.
This is an important concept because it means that without considering all three components
of fitness, it’s unlikely that one can truly optimize their suitability for living. being emotionally
motivated to look and feel better is likely to improve your mental state and ensure that you make a
sincere effort to achieve that goal. Likewise, strong mental motivation provides positive emotional
support and drives physical action. And while being physically active may not guarantee
emotional and mental stability, it will provide the right kind of physiological reinforcement.
So there you have it. That’s my take on fitness. And what about our 10 fittest? now it’s
your turn to judge for yourself whether our nominees have the right stuff this year.

Sun and Your Skin
Surf’s up, bro!
-
Recently a Washington-based nonprofit, the
Environmental Working Group, released a study
showing in nearly 1,000 sunscreens tested,
four out of five didn’t sufficiently protect skin
and might contain harmful chemicals. These
compounds include para-aminobenzoic acid
(PABA) and oxybenzone, both possible irritants.
The EWG investigation revealed only
15 percent met the standard for “safety
and effectiveness,” and the brands gave
misleading information, such as “all day
protection, waterproof and chemical-free.” More
importantly, oxybenzone has been associated
with cell damage, hormone disorders and low
birth weight.
Recently, The Washington Post asked John
Bailey, chief scientist of the Personal Care
Products Council, about sunscreen chemical
quantities.
“Some people feel like there’s no (federal)
oversight, but that’s not true,” he says. “These
are very, very low levels, below levels that may
be showing effects in animal or cell culture
testing. All evidence that we have is that it’s not
a risk to health.”
- One-in-five Americans develop some form of skin cancer
- Risk increases after the age of 40
- 25 percent of sun damage happens before the age of 18
- Although darker-skinned nationalities are at a lower risk for
developing skin cancer, if developed they are more likely to die
- Less than 6 percent of all skin cancers are melanomas, and they
represent almost 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths.
- 63,480 new 2008 US melanoma cases (2,500 more than last year!)
- More than 1 million cases of US non-melanoma skin cancer
diagnosed yearly are considered sun-related
The key to sun protection is constant
reapplication and not blindly trusting products,
according to Dr. Valerie Hanft of Westlake
Dermatology. She also says allergic reactions to
chemical sunscreens are not uncommon.
“Nothing is going to be truly waterproof,” she
says. “People expect blanket protection, and
that’s just not the case. What they need are
more realistic expectations.”
Test subjects apply thick coats, which Hanft
says is unpractical in general public usage. One
person is expected to use an entire bottle in one
day of sunshine.
Sunlight is composed of two types of
ultraviolet light – UVB rays, which cause
sunburns, and UVA rays, which tan. While both
increase the risk of skin cancer, sun damage and
wrinkles; the FDA doesn’t require sunscreens to
provide UVA protection.
Trisha Leslie, Pink Hair Salon and Gallery
Esthetician, believes daily sun protection is
important.
“90 percent of all aging is from the sun,”
she says. “Even being in the car you’re
getting damage.”
Dr. Lisa Rhodes, also from Westlake
Dermatology, says any zinc oxide-containing
brand is appropriate, and recommends daily SPF
15 wear on your hands and face.
“Zinc and titanium are the gold standard for
sun blocks,” she says. “They block rays and do
not absorb them.”
Using zinc oxide-based products only protects
the elevation of corneocytes in the stratum
corneum. The stratum corneum, the outermost
layer of your skin, essentially has peaks and
valleys. Venus DeMarco, Austin esthetician named
CitySearch Web site’s “Best Facial” says zinc-
oxide based products only protect the peaks, and
chemical-based sit in the valleys.
“Every individual qualifies for different methods
of skincare, because there are exceptions to all
rules with conditions of the skin,” DeMarco says.
Although popular studies have tried to
prove zinc oxide-based products are toxic,
DeMarco says they aren’t. She believes
people are too fanatical about sunscreen.
Like an excessive amount of any product,
people ‘overuse’ these
sunscreens.

Vitamin D is the key!

10 Ways to Protect Your SkinWith all the hype of new sun blocking
methods, constantly using protective lotion
can be boring, greasy and quite monotonous.
Nutrition, clothing, makeup and even soap can
help give your skin some extra SPF.
A balanced diet is essential for good
health, and certain foods in everyday
nutrition can help protect your skin. DeMarco
emphasized the importance of dark green leafs
and various colored vegetables. Studies have
shown citrus fruits, green tea, wild salmon
and even dark chocolate have also proven to
protect against skin cancer and help shield
from UV’s harmful rays.
All the experts agree mineral makeup is an
effective tool for daily sun protection. Leslie
says the powder can be a good aid for guarding
your skin.
“It provides good additional support and
coverage for every layer,” she says.
Bethesda sunscreen soap, new to the
constantly growing market, provides protection
from the moment you step out of the shower.
Rhodes said theoretically the soap would
work, but she has yet to see any studies on the
product. She said she considers sun-protective
clothing fully effective, which can range from an
SPF of 15 to 70.
An alternative to sun-protective clothing
is Sunguard Laundry Aid, which gives your
clothing up to 30 SPF protection factor. It works
simply by mixing with detergent in the wash.
“If sun-protective clothing is too
expensive, you could try the detergent,” she
said. “However, it should not be used as a
replacement for SPF on exposed skin.”
Here we review 10 products that will help
you stay skin-safe while keeping the rays at bay.

NEWS
WhaT’S ThE GOOD WORD?
16 | AUSTIN FIT MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2008
Sure they’re informative, but news headlines — especially on the topic of health — tend to be downright depressing. Don’t despair, hope-seekers; the good stuff may be harder to find, but a little filtering will reveal that rays of sunshine do exist.
Holding SteadyIt’s more like an absence of bad news than a legitimate sign of reversal,
but recently released data shows that rates of childhood obesity appear
to be leveling off. Despite a perception that childhood obesity has
only gotten worse over the last few years, since 1999 the percentage
of obese or overweight children has actually held steady at about 32
percent — still an alarming number, to be sure, but a plateau is better
than an incline. School programs, dietary education and parental
nagging might finally be making a difference, but it’s important to stay
vigilant and keep our kids moving in the right direction.
Summer PlayThis bit of news should be especially nice for Austinites to hear: summer
sports are remarkably less dangerous
than winter ones. Warm weather
pursuits like swimming, hiking, biking
and camping — the kinds of things
that we can do for much of the
year — are far less likely to cause
injuries than snow-related activities. A
Survey of 63 emergency rooms found
that snowboarding accidents alone
account for more breaks, strains and
sprains than all Texas-style pastimes
combined. Perhaps the heat has
its benefits after all. And while it’s
important to be careful out there,
don’t let worry get in the way of your
outdoor fun.
The Ban EffectSmoking bans have
pushed smokers
outside of bars and
restaurants in cities
across the world,
stirring up controversy
and — by the looks of
it — inspiring positive
change as well. Over
the past few years,
surveys show that
thousands of smokers
have cut back on
cigarette consumption
or quit altogether. In
fact, London estimates
that 400,000 people
have given up the habit
since a widespread ban was enacted. While, as a state, California has
been an aggressive pioneer in banning smoking, some of the most
notoriously smoke-filled cities in decades past have ironically joined in,
without really looking back. Cosmopolitan locales like New York and
even Paris, a city practically defined by cigarette-smoking, have given
up the nasty habit in public places, all in the interest of better health.
Could it be that government action has made the world a better place?
That’s certainly news to be welcomed.
Winter sports were shown to cause more injuries than warm-weather sports
Some of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world — New York, London and even Paris — have implemented city-wide smoking bans with great success

Q+A: FROM THE READERS
Have a fitness question? How it works...
Eating right all the time is the best, not just after a workout. Some suggested snacks are fruit, whole-wheat pretzels, whole-grain crackers or baby carrots. Make snacking fun and interesting by adding peanut butter with an apple or enjoying some low-fat fruit yogurt.
It’s possible to lose muscle if you’re doing too much cardio, but it’s pretty unlikely. Keeping your cardio between 30 and 45 minutes with proper nutrition, can maintain your muscle mass.
Skipping a workout will put you further away from your goal; consistency is the key. The human body adapts quickly. If you’re not consistent for about two weeks you could be back at square one.
It’s not less beneficial to do the same routine, however you won’t see the same level of progress. So, if your goal is to lose weight, I would recommend avoiding the same routine. You should constantly keep your body guessing, changing your routine every three weeks.
Basically, women don’t have enough testosterone to get really bulky. Yes, there are some women who think they’re getting too big when they’re weight training. But you have to build muscle in order to facilitate the fat loss. At the end of the day, my suggestion is that women who want to build strength go with high reps and low weight training.

THE 10 FITTEST IN AUSTINTexas might be one of the 10 fattest states in the country as a staggering 27 percent of our population is
considered obese. Fortunately, Austin is the island in this sea of blubber: we are one of the fittest cities in
America as our trails, gyms and parks are teeming with energetic, active folks. And there are hundreds —
thousands, really — of unbelievably fit people who make Austin the fitness capital of Texas. As a magazine,
one of our roles is to single those fit folks out. Every year, we compile a list of the 10 fittest Austinites by
polling our readers who responded with thousands of votes cast for their favorites. Our top 10 is simply the
few that have surfaced...and thankfully it just scratches the surface of how fit our city truly is.

scott CARY
Age: 52 Height: 6’2”
Weight: 225 lbs Years in
Austin: 32
Favorite activity: Coaching my Special Olympics basketball team to gold medals the past two years.
turning point: I’ve been a police officer my entire adult life and the stress of working as a homicide detective and SWAT team coordinator led to very poor eating habits. I’ve always been a big guy, but at one point my weight ballooned to 280 and I knew I had to do something. So I started walking. One thing led to another and since then, I’ve completed hundreds of races, triathlons and seven marathons.
routine: I exercise every day. If I don’t run, bike or swim, I at least take a walk.
What it means to be Fit: Being fit means everything to me. Now I can walk up a flight of stairs, run with my Schnauzers and hike in the mountains without passing out. I stay active because I truly enjoy it. I do my best thinking, planning and decision-making while running. I love it. I will never win a race, but I feel like a winner every time I finish one.
Diet: Over the years, I have drastically changed my diet. Now I eat a vegan diet 99 percent of the time and feel great.
Scott Cary is the Peer Support Sergeant and Running Team Coordinator for the Austin Police Department.
amanda PATTONFAvORITE ACTIvITy: Tough call. Probably a boot camp/competitive and/or team setting. I love Muddy Buddy and other adventure races. Anything outdoors with lots of sweating; pushing myself mentally and physically gets me going.
3 FITNESS GOALS: Cardio capacity, muscle tone/low body fat, maintaining a youthful and agile body for the rest of my life. Vanity probably goes in there somewhere, too, but I try not to say that aloud.
ROUTINE: I do bootcamp style workouts three days per week, weight training one to two times per week and sprints/circuit training mixed in when I get bored or complacent with my routine. I also like mountain biking but do not do it consistently because I tend to find tree roots and rocks when I bike!
WHAT IT MEANS TO bE FIT: Fitness represents the time that I make for myself. It allows me an
outlet to clear my mind, take care of my body, and strive for a sense of
accomplishment. It also reminds me that I always have room to improve.
MOST pROFOUND SUCCESS: I had a client who lost more than 35
pounds, dropped 15 percent body fat and totally changed the way she lived her life. Most importantly, she
was proud of herself for the first time in a very long time. This pride and
sense of overcoming tough things in her life translated into a new person
altogether that now oozes confidence, contentment, peace and just an overall
love of life. It’s a beautiful thing!

FAvORITE ACTIvITIES: Soccer, running, biking, triathlons,
motivating/inspiring others.
REGULAR FITNESS ROUTINE: I teach around 10 group fitness
classes per week, do eight personal training sessions per week, do
my personal workouts/training in my downtime, play soccer on the
weekends and chase my 2-year-old son Troy around after that.
pERSONAL NUTRITION: Lots of protein, pre-workout shakes, immediate refueling after a workout (Optimize in 45!). Overall I try to make sensible food choices but I do allow myself the occasional sweet treat.
3 MAJOR FITNESS GOALS: 1) be a good example for my kids for having an active and healthy lifestyle; 2) motivate others to overcome their fears so they can realize their full potential and reach their goals, whatever those may be; 3) to complete an Ironman.
THE IMpORTANCE OF ATTITUDE: I think it is the most important factor in life. I always tell my students that having a positive attitude will get you through the tough times — working out or otherwise. The two rules I have in my classes are: Smile and be loud.

ana TIGREFAvORITE ACTIvITy: Weight
training, trail running and hiking.
WHAT FITNESS MEANS TO ME: Clearly, fitness is a huge part of
who I am and being fit, I hope I’m a role model for other women.
ON COMpETITION: Competition has always played a big role in my life. Growing up in Brazil, I competed as an equestrian all over South America for 16 years. For the past six years, I have been an amateur figure competitor. During the competitive season, I train every day for up to two hours. This year, I hope to change my status from amateur to professional figure competitor by winning my pro card.
DIET: Obviously, I train hard to stay fit, but good nutrition is also very important in living a healthy lifestyle. I maintain a healthy diet all year-round because it nourishes my body and my mind. I may not always compete, but I will always exercise and lead a fit, healthy life.

FAvORITE ACTIvITy: My favorite activity is coaching the H.E.A.T.
Saturday boot camps. Not only do I coach but I get to participate in
kayaking, swimming, hoover ball, cardio tennis, soccer, football and trail races.
Cody Butler is the owner of H.E.A.T. (High Energy & Agility Training) boot

THE DEFINITION OF FITNESS: Fitness to me incorporates both the mind and body. Simply put, fitness is a personal result attained through challenging workouts, mental preparation and commitment to a lifestyle of constantly working towards a balanced mind and body.
ROUTINE: Most of my workouts integrate movements based on power lifting, gymnastics and cardiovascular training. I aim for four to five days a week, with my workouts lasting no longer than an hour in length.
THE KEy TO HELpING OTHERS: Beyond the “I need to lose weight” or “I want to put on muscle” goal, for many, there’s a deeper reason why a physical transformation is needed. From the beginner to the advanced athlete, training to become more fit involves a journey of hard work, dedication and a willingness to change their lifestyle.

FAvORITE ACTIvITIES: Basketball, racquetball and softball.
REGULAR ROUTINE: I work out at least five days a week. Usually,
I’ll lift three or four days a week and combine that with cardio work on a
treadmill or bike. If I’m really busy at the station and don’t have time for
a full workout at the gym, I’ll hit the track and run sprints for 30 minutes and then go back to work. I just try
to stay lean and muscular.
FITNESS GOALS: I don’t have the body type to be a muscle man so I don’t even make
an attempt to bulk up. My only real goal is just not to be totally
self-conscious in the summer when I take my shirt off. And for the
first time in my life, I can say I feel comfortable with doing just that.
WHAT FITNESS MEANS TO ME: I played baseball and football in high school so fitness has always been important to me. I live to compete so playing basketball two or three
times during the week at the Lifetime Fitness in south Austin is very
fulfulling to me in multiple ways.

FITNESS bAckGroUNd: My first fitness job was as a personal trainer was at a Jack LaLanne Health
Club in New York in 1984. At that time, I was sharing a dorm room with Mr. All-Natural NY, NJ and CT. That’s where I learned all about weightlifting
for bodybuilding and nutrition. In 1998, I founded Krav Maga — it was the
answer to my 20- year quest for cardio that didn’t bore me to death. I also found it leaned me out and put me
into much better shape and condition compared to weightlifting.
3 GoALS: To feel good, look good and keep up with my students.
FAvorITE SUccESS STorIES: We have dozens of weight-loss stories,
and personal records set, but my favorite success stories are of the
women and men who have successfully defended themselves or someone else
from an attack.
dIET: I stick close to the Zone diet for most meals, staying as organic

all include protein, low glycemic carbs and healthy fats. I stray a few times per

On her training: I’m still an active competitor {Fisher won the CapTexTri in May} so whenever I have a couple of free hours, I squeeze in my training. Most of my training comes in the early morning, but I also work in some swims and bike rides during the afternoon and early evening. I’m so lucky to live here in Austin where I have immediate access to all my training venues and have great training buddies to keep me going. If I couldn’t roll out my back door and go for a long run or ride, I’m not quite sure if those workouts would always happen.
On LiFe: I discover new challenges every year and tend to gravitate toward the most extreme of them. With my own training, coaching and business, I am all about time management. FITNESS BACKGROUND: International fencer, black belt Kenpo, brown belt Aikido.
FITNESS GOALS: My fitness goal for the year is to continue building lean muscle while reducing my body fat. I’m almost there. I work out five or six days a week and do a lot of different things. Even at my age, I’m still growing and sculpting.
HIS ROUTINE: My wife and I own Round Rock Kenpo where we teach yoga and the martial arts so I have to stay fit and active. When I work with weights, I go extremely heavy and intense to keep my bones and muscles in production mode. I mix my lifting with cardio and that has produced some amazing results for me.

HIS DIET: Since I get up so early for the morning newscast, I eat a lot of

RECIPE
A mignonette is the perfect compliment to this oyster appetizer giving the dish an air of class that ordinary cocktail sauce cannot. Frozen mignonette on a slightly warmed, buttery broiled oyster is pure pleasure.
preparation Ingredients Cost
by Alexa Sparkman, MA, RD, LD and Maryam Naghaviani, UT nutrition student
Mix all ingredients except oysters and butter in a shallow dish. Place the
dish in the freezer for at least one hour. While the mignonette is freezing,
clean the oysters, removing excess dirt from the outer shell. Keep
refrigerated. Immediately before serving, open the oysters with an oyster
knife leaving the oyster and liquor in the half shell cup. Place oyster half
shells in an 8- to 10-inch shallow baking dish.
Drop 1/4-teaspoon butter on each oyster and
broil four to six inches from heat for two minutes
or until the butter melts and the oysters start to
curl around the edges. Remove mignonette from
the freezer and break into shards with a fork.
Place one heaping tablespoon of the mignonette
on each oyster and serve immediately.

UT FOOTBALL
The Longhorns have a heavy burden to bear as they launch into the fray on August 30. Many over-achieving fans would call the last two seasons (both 10-3) less than stellar; will this year’s team deliver the top-notch performance that every orange-bleeding sports fan longs for? This year’s schedule looks pretty tough — the ‘Horns are set
to face some of the likely top teams of the Big 12, including
Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. A few key players won’t be
returning, including running back Jamaal Charles, but we still
have golden boy Colt McCoy, now a junior, as well as Quan
Cosby and Jordan Shipley. A few youngsters will have their
chance to step up, too; and it’s a safe bet that Coach Mack
Brown will focus on improving the Longhorns’ defense, which
has been pretty dismal over the last couple years.
We’ll all just have to wait and see how well the ‘Horns can hook
‘em this year, but with a fancy new stadium and the irrepressible

in for a passion-driven and heartfelt spectacle.

WHAT I TALK ABOUT WHEN I TALK ABOUT RUNNINGBy Haruki Murakami, Alfred A. Knopf, 192 pagesTranslated from the Japanese by Philip Gabriel
Haruki Murakami is without question one
of the great writers of his era. He has written a
number of critically-acclaimed novels, among
them Kafka on the Shore and Norwegian Wood.
In total he’s written 12 works of fiction, some
of which have been translated into more than
30 languages. Oh, he’s also run 25 marathons,
and a few triathlons.
Over the years, Murakami has garnered
a reputation for being a pretty guarded
individual. He originally left Japan to escape
his enormous publicity, which exploded almost
overnight. He’s notoriously camera-shy. His
private life and his fiction are considered to
be separate worlds. But, as his popularity
soared to new heights in recent years, this
guardedness has given way to personal
introductions in his new books, this memoir of
course, and the forthcoming Murakami Diary
2009, which will be out in September.
In his introduction to What I Talk About
When I Talk About Running, Murakami mentions
reading a runner’s mantra: “Pain is inevitable.
Suffering is optional.” This serves as a general
guide by which he frames this slender memoir,
an assembled series of essays. By insisting
upon the inevitability of reality, especially that
of growing older, he suggests that we learn to
cope with reality, accept it and finally, move
beyond it, just like years, months, days and
miles — without suffering.
Going into detail about things like running
shoes, his dislike of cycling and the enjoyment
of an ice-cold after-race beer, Murakami relays a
lot for runners to relate to. Then he takes these
things and makes them seem like everything
else that people deal with every day. In an
extremely personal, candid and moving way, the
book makes one want to read and run at
the same time. No doubt the audiobook
will sell quite well, and for good reason:
it would be the perfect gift for any runner,
young or old.
But Murakami isn’t just talking about
running here. What I Talk About is as much
about writing and living as it is about running.
His readers will be pleased to find a lot of
interesting asides, like what made him want to
write his first novel and why he doesn’t care
about literary awards. Additionally, he discusses
things that have nothing to do with anything, like
why he doesn’t like iPods. But running — the
sport he has chosen to spend the other part of
his life doing — serves as a lens through which
to make sense of everything. And his fellow
runners, too, will be pleased to find equal weight
given to their sport, as Murakami muses on
what it means to be a runner.
One chapter contains part of a magazine
article Murakami wrote when he began running.
In it he runs from Athens to Marathon — the
original marathon, only backwards. This article
turns out to be very much what running is
all about. Every aspect of his first marathon
remains the same throughout his career as a
runner and a writer. It is always a race against
the sun, a race against time, against the self that
wants to quit.
For a long time he gradually gets better,
faster, thinking he will always continue to
improve, unafraid of aging. But when he goes
through a grueling 62-mile ultramarathon on
the northern tip of Japan, like an athletic Gregor
Samsa, he undergoes a profound change, one
he never really overcomes nor understands. And,
like so many mysterious events in his fiction, this
change cannot be grasped intellectually; rather,
it is almost like a physical thought. This section
contains a lot of insight into the way Murakami
writes what he feels.
He also discusses his own psychological
trials and tribulations at length, often thwarting his
own efforts to be better, faster. Interestingly, he
noticeably foils his own writing as well. Reluctant
to take himself too seriously, he goes out of his
way to excuse himself for discussing, well, himself.
While this is definitely an admirable quality, and
one that doesn’t come across as insincere, one
wonders if he isn’t holding back a bit of the
scrutiny to which he might subject his fictional
characters; although, his strength has always
been in allusion rather than outright revelation,
riddles rather than answers, and repetition – it’s a
large part of his charm as a writer.
In negotiating the struggles of writing and
running, the variables of his life, Murakami
finds a balance, one not unlike that of mind and
body. While other aspects seem to be constant
— marriage, music, food — the variables, the
things he does alone, are the defining activities
that really shape his being.
Murakami constructs this piecemeal
narrative with the same masterful, accessible
prose marked by humor and streaks of magic
which has made him a household name, the
same staggering insights, the same fascinating
connections. It could be said that this is exactly
what makes Murakami so special: his ability to
render everything a part of everything else, and
to end with monumental poignancy.
