Wan is a-oK, as wellas helping your roiMost business owners have

come to the realizationthat mobility with re-

gards to your network infrastruc-ture is priceless when you have aworkforce that is dispersed acrossa large area, working remotely ortrying to deal with clients and theirneeds on a 24x7 basis. You have tobe concerned with the infrastruc-ture that supports your businessfrom a wired and wireless stand-point and if you are conscious ofsome key details, your Wide AreaNetwork can offer you big returnson investment so you can keep upwith your competition and yourcustomers.

When you look at your widearea network set up for your busi-ness or look to your network pro-vider, keep these items in mind:

• Mobility – If the solution youhave in place or are consideringsetting up doesn’t allow for yourmobile work force to connect andaccess applications or data just asquickly as those sitting in yourbranch office, you may need tolook for other options to reap thebenefits.

• Cloud & Virtualization –Using the cloud and virtualizedservers/workstations is becoming

increasingly popular for businessowners, your solution should beable to allow access to these typesof set ups with proper securityagainst hacking into sensitive dataareas.

• Disaster Recovery – If youare using your WAN set up to helpwith the consolidation and backup of your sensitive data, you needto look further out from your cur-rent set up as you don’t want to getcaught changing your WAN set upif you should change your storageprovider.

Always keeping an eye towardsthe future for your local and widearea network will always keep youone step ahead of the curve andyour competition.

Tell us a little about thevolunteer efforts you’vebecome involved in sincegraduating from the LDprogram in 2011 and why?One of the direct benefits ofparticipating in LD was that itprovided me with first-handinteraction with many non-profitorganizations in Dutchess County. In fact, one of my favorite sessionsinvolved our visit to the FamilyPartnership Center, where we wereexposed to a number of charitablegroups. As a direct result of this

session, I now serve on the Boardof Advisors with the Marist LibertyPartnership Program.

How have the skills you’velearned by going through theLD program impacted yourpersonal & professional life? Before reflecting on theknowledge and skills I developedthrough the program, I have toemphasize the great relationshipsI made, many of which continuethrough my involvement with theLeadership Dutchess Committee.

The program exposed me toseveral impressive individuals, with different educational andprofessional backgrounds, ina forum in which we all cametogether and worked towards acommon goal.

If you could go back andtake part in one of the10 sessions offered in theprogram again, whichwould it be and why?The “Communications” sessionheld at Central Hudson. Amongother speaking tasks, this sessionrequired us to break up intoteams, assess an urgent crisis, andpresent the facts and backgroundof the situation, as well as animmediate plan to resolve thesituation. Something I alwaystell younger people and studentstraining to be professionals, isthat they should never miss anopportunity to speak in frontof others, especially when itforces you to step outside yourcomfort zone. No matter whatfield you work in, the ability tocommunicate with others, in bothsmall and large groups settings isessential to being successful.

Would you recommend thisprogram to your family, friends& colleagues? If so, why?Yes – I would absolutelyrecommend this program toothers. It is a unique opportunityto sharpen your leadershipskills through education andexperience, while also networkingwith other professionals, andbroadening your interaction withcharitable organizations in ourcommunity.

All businesses that take elec-tronic payments could beputting themselves and

their customers at risk. Electronicpayment security standards andrequirements are becoming moreand more serious with the grow-ing threat of identity theft. Manydata security requirements are notfully understood by business own-ers and some payment processingcompanies are simply fining themerchant for not being compliantbut do little to assist them in rem-edying the problem.

With all the advancements intechnology, identity theft is a fastgrowing crime. Cyber thieves areconstantly adapting and learningnew ways to steal data and per-

sonal information. The need forbusinesses to be compliant withPayment Card Industry Data Se-curity Standards is exponential. Many small businesses feel thatthey are too small to be targetedby cyber thieves and as a result donot take the necessary precautions. However, the majority of databreaches come from these smallbusinesses. In fact, your businesscould already be breached withoutyou knowing it which is why beingPCI DSS compliant is mandatoryfor any business.

Many businesses believe thatthey are compliant when they arenot. If you do not have a compliancecertificate and a compliance manualthen you are not compliant. Paying

a “compliance fee” to your paymentprocessing company does not meanthat you are complying with PCIDSS standards. Payment processingcompaniesareputtingmorepressureon businesses to becoming compli-ant and are placing heavy fines onthose who are not. Businesses wouldbenefit from ensuring that they arecompliant before facing these heftyor fines or worse, being breached bya cyber thief.

For help in becoming and stay-ing PCI DSS compliant, a businesscan reach out to a Qualified Se-curity Assessor or find a PaymentProcessor who develops and imple-ments anti-fraud systems. Do notwait until your data security is com-promised, get compliant today.

Be compliant to avoid cyber theft, fine

The Mount Beacon InclineRailway Restoration Soci-ety has made great strides

toward their goal of restoring theMount Beacon Railway. Newly ap-pointed president Mike Colarussoaims to continue the momentumthat former president Anne Lynchleft him with, and focus on an as-sessment of fundraising feasibility.

The society recently completeda detailed market analysis and busi-ness feasibility study thanks to agrant from the Dyson Foundation.

The study, conducted by Consult-Econ, Inc., had very significant find-ings. It estimated that the incline willhave an annual ridership of 192,000people, create a regional economicimpact of $30 million and sus-tain 480 jobs as a result of tourismspending. The report is great newsfor the Railway Restoration Societyand provides a solid case for the res-toration of the railway.

Not only has the Mount Bea-con Incline Railway RestorationSociety completed an impressivemarket analysis, but it also securedan estimated reconstruction costand timeline, finished a restora-tion concept plan complete with

architectural, interpretive and de-sign elements, and established anendowment with the CommunityFoundations of the Hudson Val-ley to ensure financial viability ofthe railway. The society has alsoremained focused on educatingstudents and community mem-bers with many classroom pre-sentations, as well as continuingresearch of the historical MountBeacon property. The society nowlooks to plan for a capital cam-paign to raise the estimated $20million needed to rebuild the in-cline railway and create a worldclass nature park.

There are many upcomingevents to help raise funds andawareness about the project in-cluding, The Beacon Sloop ClubCorn Festival on August 12, the12th Annual Hudson River ValleyRamble Hike on Sep. 15, the In-cline Railway Fall Fest/Park Queston Oct. 7 and the Beacon SloopClub Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 14.For details about the society’s cal-endar, call 845-765-3262 or, go towww.inclinerailway.org/calendar.htm.
