THE PROBUS CLUB OF OAKVILLE Established in 1988, The Fifth Probus Club in Canada August 2013 Our President’s Message Gerry Sutton Summer is half over and many members have enjoyed cottages or travel during June and July. It occurred to me that there might be interest in arranging a travelers group in which members could exchange experiences and I sent an e mail out suggesting that along with the idea of a gourmet group and a bridge group but so far there has been hardly any response. This may be because there has obviously been some problem in reaching all our members via email. At the last meeting I asked for a show of hands of how many had not received the minutes of the previous meeting and about half the members present raised their hands. This is a problem that has to be addressed immediately. The anniversary lunch at Glen Abbey was well attended and enjoyed by all and table 10 won the prize for getting the most correct answers to the quiz arranged by Helmut, Ted Nixon presented a certificate on behalf of Probus Canada and gave a brief history of the movement. We were pleased to have as our guests Al Histed and his wife Joyce. Al , as a member of the Rotary Club at the time, helped organise The Probus Club Of Oakville in 1988. For those of you who could not attend the lunch and receive an attractive anniversary pen we have a supply of them which will be available at the next few monthly meetings. Brian Taylor has arranged for interesting speakers at our meetings through June of next year and the Activities Committee under chair Robin Davison has an outstanding schedule of events for each month of 2013 and is working on 2014. On July 23 there was a large turnout of members to visit the Halton Water Treatment plant on Lakeshore West which has recently been enlarged and upgraded to handle the expected doubling in population of Halton Region to 1 million over the next 20 years. After the tour a contingent still had appetites for lunch at the Coach and Four. A reminder that cheques for the annual membership dues of $45 are now being accepted. Please bring the cheque to our August meeting, or send it to Gunther Lutz , 1903 Pilgrims Way #503, Oakville, Ontario, L6M 2X1 before August 31. I think you will agree that we get good value for the investment. In the photo above you see Ted Nixon recognizing our club’s achievements with the special certificate pictured below:
