August 2015 bulletin inside!
August 5, 2015
What’s happening this fall?! What is it? Groundings is an experience to be lived, not a class to take.
It is a discipleship experience made up of six sessions, two hours each, designed to
help people be spiritually transformed by fresh encounters with the living
Christ. Through prayer, Bible study and discussion participants learn to live out
their relationship with Christ at home, work, school, and play.
The Goal? In large and small groups, or one on one, Groundings can equip
our members and friends to support SCPC’s mission to “deploy spiritually
transformed people into the mission of the Kingdom of God.” Allowing the living
Christ to work in us, noticing the living Christ already at work in others, and helping
each other figure out just how God is calling us to participate brings discipleship
and evangelism together in every day life.
Again this fall several opportunities will be offered for you to participate in Groundings.
Don’t miss out!

Relay for Life Results
San Clemente’s 12th annual Relay for Life drew 32 teams and 800
participants to the San Clemente High School track on July 25/26,
including 63 cancer survivors. Over $54,000 has been raised to
date this year, with donations for this event being accepted until
the end of August.
SCPC was represented by the Steppin’ Forward in Support team
of 35 walkers, raising/donating over $1,800. In addition, Katie
and Dave Robinson were the Activities Chairs. Among the 11
Activities they planned and coordinated, was the 2nd annual Pre-K
Relay, which was ably assisted by Judy Apin, and supported at our
pre-school by Julie Snyder. Intrepid Greg Roberts again handled
the over-night hours of the Relay.
If you would like to contribute to this year’s event, contact Katie
or Dave Robinson at [email protected]

ALLIE TORRES SHARES HER HEART
Last weekend Allie Torres shared about her year
serving as a dorm mom at Rancho Sordo Mudo (a
school for deaf children in Mexico). Many people were
touched by her open and honest sharing.
Her heart for God came through with honesty and
authenticity, as she shared the stories of her first year,
including her triumphs and her difficult times. I gave
her a hug and said, “God is in this, transforming you and all you serve! Thanks for
letting us be a part of it. Praise be to God!"
I was moved by two things that Allie shared. 1. God was already working in her
dad’s heart by supporting her decision to go. That was a gift to her. 2. The
actualization that she left everything behind that is familiar to her; her family,
friends, support, daily comforts of home, the ordinary things we take for granted.
She is truly following Jesus by stepping out in faith, leaving the ordinary behind
and depending on Him completely.

Allie’s ministry as she
returns to RSM, email her
MENTORS FOR INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE STUDENTS
SCPC has supported Tyrannus Halls International, led by Steve and Julie Olsen, for many years. These
mission partners oversee homes for Christian men and women attending college in Hungary, Czech
Republic, India and Japan.
Our new mission, Mentors for Tyrannus Halls (M4TH), will connect us with Tyrannus Hall students. It is
intended to match a member of the congregation with a student, based on his/her major. The mentor can
not only provide prayers and small gift cards, but also mentor the student in their major and future career.
We are launching with four male students, three in Prague and one in Tokyo. Two of the students are
currently living in the SCPC Room, in the Prague Tyrannus Hall. (In previous years SCPC Missions sponsored
the creation of this room.)
If you are interested in serving as a mentor, sign up on the patio on Sundays, August 30 and September 6.
Contact Barbara Barnes at [email protected] or 370.0559.
Back to School means back to after-school Tutoring and Clubs. We are
recruiting volunteers for our 10th year helping students build skills and
develop real-world talents. Here are reasons why YOU should join this
worthwhile endeavor
“I have heard amazing things about Terrific Tuesday and can't wait for us
to meet to ensure we get this off to a great start for our students,” Cyndy
Guerrattz, New Assistant Principal at San Onofre School.
“I tutored for approximately 7 years and it was a
great experience. Working one-on-one with 4th
and 5th graders and many times just seeing the
light come on when they get what you are
teaching is very rewarding.” Hal Barnett, Tutor at
Marblehead Elementary.
“A wonderful way to help out the Marines on the home front.
If you love sweet, endearing and funny children, you will love tutoring:
They will try their hardest.
They will tell you everything. Sometimes
it may even be true!
They will make you laugh!
They will lighten your heart.
They will teach you more than you will
teach them.
Tuesday will become your favorite day of the
week.
Learn to play ‘GO Fish’!
Expect to be hugged a lot.”
Carolyn Peters, Tutor at San Onofre
If you are interested in serving as a tutor, sign up on the patio on
Sundays, August 30 and September 6. Contact Barbara Barnes at

Dear SCPC Family,
Our fiscal year ended on June 30. As you are probably aware,
2014-15 has been a difficult year for us financially. Last Fall,
we found ourselves having to draw $223, 000 from our
reserves in order to keep the church operating. At that time
we made some difficult cuts to our expenses. Since making
these cuts, our operating reserve has recovered somewhat
but we are still not where we need to be. We ended the year
paying back $131,000 to our reserves, but still owe $92,000
in order to pay back all we borrowed. It is a widely-held
opinion that churches should have at least 2-3 months of op-
erating costs in reserve, which in our case would be $400,000
to $600,000.
The good news is we are moving in the right direction in terms
of getting us back to a state of financial health. We still have
a long way to go.
Please continue to be praying for our church as we move into
the new fiscal year. Also, please prayerfully consider increas-
ing your giving so we can move forward in mission and
ministry.
