AUGUST 2015

Hello to the Ingleburn High School Community.

Term 3 began with Year 12 Trial HSC exams and were supervised by the same people who are overseeing the HSC exams next term. Teachers were released from their Year 12 classes and did professional development activities such as Google Forms, Formative Assessments, Kids Cafeteria, Curriculum adjustments and Project based learning activities. Staff evaluations revealed that students will strongly benefit from this time spent and their classroom activities will be even more exciting.!!

It is not long now for Year 12 to complete their studies and spend their holiday break studying for their HSC exams. The end of term activities including a fun day and graduation has been well organised and students are very excited. I would like to remind all parents and students that their behaviour till the end of term will continue to be exemplary as leaders in the school. There is NO ‘muck up’ time for Year 12 as it is quite clear that these activities breach the DEC behaviour code and can create problems for students graduating at the venue for which they sit the HSC. I am fully confident there will be no issues.

Students have been much better in the wearing of full school uniform and I would like to congratulate over 95% of students who have complied. Just a reminder that black shorts or tights are not part of our uniform and parents will be called if these are worn and be sent home to change.

Why does DEC support a mandatory school uniform in NSW schools?

• It defines an identity for the school within its community

• It develops students’ sense of belonging to the school community

• It provides an opportunity to build school spirit • It enhances the health and safety of students

when involved in school activities • It promotes a sense of inclusiveness, non-

discrimination and equal opportunity • It reinforces the perception of the school as an

ordered and safe environment

• It increases the personal safety of students and staff by allowing easier recognition of visitors and potential intruders in the school

• It promotes positive community perceptions of public education

• It makes school clothing more affordable for families by eliminating the risk of peer pressure to wear transiently fashionable and expensive clothes

If your family is having financial difficulties – please write a request to the Principal for support in getting your school uniform. There is funding in the school to help, where needed. All applications and assistance are treated confidentially and sensitively.

We will be continuing to focus on improving and maintaining high uniform standards – so keep up the great efforts and wear your Ingleburn High School uniform with pride!

'N' Determinations

Students in Years 10-12 are issued with Non-Determination ('N' Determination) notices if they have failed to submit assessment tasks or other required work to their individual teachers. We have quite a number of students, particularly in Years 10 and 11, who have large numbers of 'N' Determinations and have made no attempt to rectify or fix the problem. THE ONLY WAY for an 'N' Determination to be lifted from the student's record is for the work to be completed and submitted to the teacher. If this does not happen very serious consequences can follow.

These include the non-award of a RoSA, the Preliminary HSC or the HSC itself and the need to repeat an academic year as a consequence.

If you are aware that your son/daughter has 'N' Awards can you please do your best to ensure that they complete the required work and submit it.

Notification of Change of Address/Phone Numbers

A significant number of parent/carer phone numbers are out of date. A smaller number of parent/carer addresses are similarly out of date. It is vital – especially if an emergency is involved – that these details are kept up to date. There are a few ways parents can notify the school regarding changes:

(a) Pro-formas are on the school website under Documents – follow the links

(b) Come to the school and notify in person

(c) A phone call to the Deputy Principals or the Principal.

If your family details are now out of date, I would appreciate your prompt response to rectify this situation. A form is included at the back of this newsletter for your convenience.

SCHOOL FEES

Just a reminder to all Parents/Guardians that school fees are now due. Payment may be made in full or a payment plan can be arranged if necessary. The school now has EFTPOS facilities but cash or cheque are also accepted.

Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated. A full list of fees can be obtained from the front office. We seek your earliest attention in this matter.

SCHOOL EQUIPMENT

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS

Microsoft is continuing its support for students in NSW Public Schools by providing students with free downloads of their Operating Systems Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 as well as Microsoft Office 2010 and 2013.

Students need an active DEC email address (<username>@education.nsw.gov.au) to gain access to the free software.

MUSIC EXCURSION TO THE OPERA HOUSE

On 22 July Mr Kurukchi and Ms Young took students from Years 9-11 Music Elective classes to the Opera House to see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

It was part of the Meet the Music program and was the first time Ingleburn High School had participated in the event. Twenty-two students were able to experience first-hand a live premier orchestra and also view the inner workings of a professional event. For many of the students it was their first time traveling to the city. It was a terrific experience for our students and they were thoroughly excited and engaged throughout the whole concert. We hope to make this a regular event at the school as the students gained new learning experiences and can see the role of Music in the world outside the classroom.

Our View of the Orchestra. This was during the intermission, best seats in the house!

UNSW ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Simon Thai, Mina Gouhar and Zubair Mohammed went to the UNSW to participate in “The Great Engineering Challenge” run by Engineers Australia on 5 August.

Students completed three engineering challenges (Glider Plane Challenge, Bridge Challenge and Car Obstacle Challenge) that are designed to demonstrate what engineering is and to develop some skills necessary for engineering such as teamwork, effective communication and creative thinking.

Our boys demonstrated logical and out of the box thinking skills and worked well to finish all the challenges in time. Finally our students achieved amazing results ranking 38 out of 51 schools. Well done boys!

Vocational Education and Training (VET) NEWS

It has been a very exciting term for VET at our school. Apart from students completing their Units of Competency to achieve their respective certificates and busily attending Work Placement to improve on their skills, three of our students in Year 12 were finalists in the Department of Education Ultimo Registered Training Organisation (RTO) Awards. The event was held at Revesby Workers Club on 19 August where over 300 people attended ranging from Regional Directors, Principals, Teachers, Students and Parents. Also present was Murat Dizdar, Executive Director of Public Schools NSW. Everyone came along to celebrate the success of students in VET.

Over 130 schools across the Department’s RTO are invited to submit applications for Student, Teacher and School of Excellence VET Awards. I am very humbled and pleased to announce that three of our Year 12 students – Krystal Narayan (Business Services), Cheyanne Boualorn (Retail Services) and Kannika Puengkliang (Hospitality – Kitchen Operations) were finalists in the awards and were awarded a $50 Gift Voucher and Certificate on the night. Miss Marwa Chuna was a finalist in the Teachers Category and our school was the Winner for the School of Excellence Award. Well done to all participants and I look forward to more great work from our school in the future.

It is great to see that our students are being recognised for the hard work in which they do to better their post school pathways. A mention also to the hard work of the VET staff who so tirelessly give their best to better the opportunity of our students. Thank you to the following staff – Mr Bratic (Sport Coaching), Miss Chuna and Mr Newing (Retail Services), Ms Williams and Miss Gerace (Hospitality – Kitchen Operations), Mr Tomeski (Construction), Ms Bajkanovic (Business Services) and Mrs Duval (Careers Adviser).

On a final note, there are many students in Year 12 and Year 11 who are still to submit their Unique Student Identifier (USI) forms to me. I urge all students to complete these forms as soon as possible, otherwise they will not be credentialed for the Certificates they are studying.

Till next time! Ms G. Koskinas

YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP TRAINING DAY

On Monday 3 August some students from Year 11 participated in a Leadership Training Day. The day was used to help students prepare for leadership roles in the school such as school Prefect, Captain, members of the SRC or House Captain. The students who participated identified themselves or were identified as student leaders.

The day included various activities to help the students develop the necessary skills to help them take on leadership roles in the school. These activities included Displaying School Values, Being a Role Model, Team Work, Overcoming Fears and Speech Writing. The students also had a challenge to build the longest spaghetti bridge but using the least amount of spaghetti.

The students who participated felt they were assisted in their pursuit of a role as a leader at Ingleburn High School. The activities gave them an idea of what it was like to get up in front of a group of people and speak through an impromptu speech and prepare for leadership roles.

Students then put their names forward to be nominated as 2016 Year 12 Prefects. Results of the elections will be out shortly.

Congratulations to those who participated in the training day as well as the Prefect Speeches.

YEARS 7 AND 8

On Monday, 10 August, Years 7 and 8 watched ‘Sticks and Stones’, a play about non-violent conflict resolution, performed by Brainstorm Productions. The performance was an entertaining way to promote discussion and gave the students guidelines for our anti-bullying/harassment policy. The play’s message was clear; violence is not on – at school, at home, on the street, anywhere. The students were taught constructive ways to deal with anger. It was a thought provoking production which the students enjoyed and benefited from.

ANTI-RACISM – A MESSAGE FROM THE ARCO

Ingleburn High School has a strong commitment to Multicultural Education, equity and equality. These beliefs permeate all of our school policies including our Anti-Racism Policy, the Cultural Diversity and Community Relations Policy, Multicultural Education in schools, the Aboriginal Education and Training Policy and the Complaints Handling Policy, amongst others. This ethos is embedded in our teaching practice and not only is it taught explicitly to students, but it also forms part of our expectations of the safe, respectful learners that attend Ingleburn High School.

Any member of the school community has the right to lodge a complaint and seek a favourable resolution if they have been the victim of racial vilification in the school context. The resolution of such complaints can be either formal or informal depending on the severity and frequency of the abuse. It is my duty as an Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) of Ingleburn High School to handle such complaints and to provide mediation, education and monitoring that leads to reduced recidivism of racial abuse in our school.

If any student experiences such vilification, they are encouraged to speak to their teacher and to see myself in the History, Languages and Music Faculty in BR0064. If you have any questions regarding our policies or the resolution process, please contact me through the school’s front office.

SOCIAL SCIENCE REPORT

As you are probably aware in April this year, the Social Science Faculty, on behalf of the school, entered the Champions of the West Competition. Our Kids Canteen Proposal won the Classrooms of the Future Category and the school won $10,000 to assist the students in running the school canteen. The planning has already begun and students will be responsible for the canteen operation from the start of 2016.

The students, staff and P&C are now planning to transform the canteen area into an eat-in Cafeteria. This is another three year project that will involve all faculties and all students in the school. Each faculty will adapt some of their curriculum into Project Based Learning topics that will assist in the building of the cafeteria.

Some examples of how this is working include:

ArchiTrave, a Liverpool Architectural Business, has agreed to draw up 3D plans of the new cafeteria for free! When they came to measure up, students with an interest in this field were offered an opportunity to work with the architects to measure for the initial plans. These students were given a valuable insight into this sort of business and some will be offered work placement in the months to come to further develop their knowledge and skills in this field and prepare them more effectively for the world of work.

Year 10 Commerce students are surveying the student population on their buying habits and tastes with respect to the menu to be offered in 2016.

Year 9 Work Education students are writing Job Descriptions and Job Advertisements for a Photographer and a Journalist. They have interviewed applicants and appointed some students to these roles.

Year 10 Work Education students are beginning to write Policies and Procedures for students who will be working in the canteen from 2016.

Senior Business Studies students are studying financial documents to assist them with completing the canteen books from next year.

As we begin building the cafeteria we will be seeking parent and carer support with contacts of businesses who may be willing to assist with this project. Support may be in the form of guest speakers, industry visits, donations of money or products or assistance with carrying out building works.

In addition to this, the P&C and the Social Science Faculty have been extremely busy seeking funding from a variety of sources to assist with these projects.

These include:

$120,000 from the State Government “Community Building Partnerships Programme”.

$20,000 from a Federal Government Grant for “Stronger Communities Programmes”.

Provision of a large number of electrical Appliances and equipment for the canteen, from the Good Guys, “Doing Good Promotion”

Discussions with the Asset Management Unit to assist with funding.

We will not know the outcome of these applications till January 2016; however, we will continue to do what we can to ensure the success of this very worthwhile whole school project.

I have included some photos of the existing canteen area and some of the vision of the completed project. Also included are photos of the interior of the canteen that will soon be renovated to meet the needs of our students who will be working in there next year.

I look forward to working with the school community including parents, carers, local business and community groups as well as staff and student, over the coming years to ensure this valuable project is completed to provide students with the quality environment they deserve.
