Are you new to the area? MCCS Henderson Hall extends a warm welcome! The PCS season is in full swing, and we’d like to remind you that a Welcome Aboard Orientation for Marines and their families takes place every month on the Henderson Hall portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. This month’s orientation is Tuesday, August 11, 8 – 10:30 AM in Bldg. 29, Rm. 105. Following the orientation, there is a short break for lunch (each sponsor receives a $5 coupon for the Java Café). A free bus tour of the local area, including downtown Washington, D.C., follows at noon. See page 8 for details.
If you are interested in volunteering, we have an opportunity for you! Be an ambas-sador for the battalion by joining the “Marines Mentoring Millennials” program, which visits our Partner in Education school twice a month. Read about it on page 5.
This month’s cover is a departure for us, in that it features the newest hires in our Support Division, Human Resources Branch, whose personnel make sure programs have what they need to support servicemembers. Everything from travel to training, hiring to health benefits...HR personnel are there to assist. Speaking of hiring, we are! Have a look at our job opportunities at www.usmc-mccs.org/careers and see where you can join our organization.

Long-Standing Volunteer Program Adopts New Name,Maintains Mission After 35 Years
Marine Corps Community Services Henderson Hall has held a long-standing relationship with Barcroft Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia. For over 35 years, Marines have joined in mentoring students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade during the academic school year. The Partner in Education (PIE) program began in 1980 by Henderson Hall’s Rita Treadwell and continues today to impact the local community, as Marines develop unique bonds with the students. In March 1991, the pro-gram, then called “Adopt-a-School,” was designated a “Daily Point of Light” by the Points of Light volunteer organization.
Throughout the years, both mentors and students have changed; recently the program name changed, too. Previously known as the Tutor & Buddy Program, the new name is “Marines Mentoring Millennials.” The millennial demographic comprises both Generation Y and Generation Z. Millennials include people born after 1980 and through the early part of the century, although the moniker can be interpreted many ways. Labeled as the “New Millennials,” Generation Z has grown up with technology-centered
curriculum, to include iPads and YouTube. Although the name has changed, the
mission of the program remains the same. The Partnership in Education is maintained through mentorship and academic support. The program provides Marines the oppor-tunity to mentor and foster relationships with the local community through building relationships with school-aged children. As one Marine said, “Giving back is rewarding. Who knows? They may give back one day to someone else.”
The Barcroft Elementary School reading specialist has watched the program grow over the years and recognizes the impact Marines have left among the faculty, chil-dren and families. “The children and staff love it when the Marines visit,” she said.
Are you interested in becoming part of this ongoing success story? Join the program as a Marine or civilian volunteer for your local community beginning this September 14. Visits are twice a month, 11:40 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Transportation is provided, leav-ing by the pull-up bars by the Cpl. Terry L. Smith Gymnasium.
