NEWS FROM THE DRAKE HOUSEAUGUST 2016
Back to School, Kids! How the summer has flown by! We had many greatactivities for all of our children to include over-night camp in the mountains, dance lessons, gardening and park projects, job shadowing, tutoring and water fun. But now it's time to getback into the swing of that academic schedule! There are currently 26 children living here at TheDrake House, of which 22 are enrolled in ouramazing Fulton County Schools. Twelve are boysand ten are girls, attending eleven differentschools across the area, from Sandy Springs toMilton. All of our residents are offered theopportunity to remain in their original school, but
if they opt to attend our district schools, we are thrilled that our youngerkiddos will be attending the new Vickery Mill ES, that is within easy walkingdistance. Thanks to the great support of many of you, we have been able toprovision all of our children with a backpack stuffed with needed supplies, and even provided another thirty to "graduate" children, who have kept inclose contact with our Family Services Team. It's important to rememberthat youth hunger and homelessness continues to grow, as we see thenumber of children eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch rise year overyear. We are very grateful to be a part of an amazing andaward-winning school system who recognizesthis fact, as well as a generous community thatsupports the most vulnerable families who live, work, play and pray here! To see a great successstory about one of our students, read on!
Have a great year!
Warm regards,
Kathy Sw ahnKathy Sw ahnExecutive Director

Career Coach's Corner
Employment Partners are the sunshine in ourpocket here in the Career Services department ofThe Drake House. We are so pleased to reportthat Kimberly-Clark Corporation partnered withus in July to host a Mock Interview Event onsite inThe Drake Center. Our Moms come to us in various stages of theemployment process. Some are employed full time, others part time, andothers are unemployed. In an effort to reach our entire client base, theKimberly-Clark team worked closely with our Career Coach to prepareinterview questions for two different types of interviews. The first type ofinterview would be for the "unemployed" interviewer. The second type ofinterview focused on the employee looking to transfer internally to a higherpaying position within their present company. While the event was set up ina "Mock" fashion, the results are very real.
Presently we are at full capacity with only one Mom who is still searching forfull time employment. The Mock Interview event provided deeper insight forour Moms about the need to prepare and practice for phone, internet, and in-person interviews.
What did our Mom's have to say about this event?
...the"feedback was very appreciated and I will use it movingforward"......(the interviewers) "gave awesome advise""I think this was a good and fun exercise for growth anddevelopment""Good feedback and great way of prepping for the work world"
What did our volunteer interviewers from Kimberly-Clark have to say aboutthe event?
"I really enjoyed (the Moms); the women were excited andenthusiastic"...it was a "great experience and loved helping these ladies!""overall, I really enjoyed it - Thanks!""This is worth doing again!"
We want to thank Kimberly Clark and their WIN team, especially Mary Izzyand Melpo Levantis who spear-headed the event and recruited highly skilledinterviewers from their professional network. Partnerships, like the one withKimberly-Clark, have proven to be stronginfluencers for continued communitysuccess for our clients. We are so thankfulfor the Employment Partnership withKimberly-Clark! Thank You!!
If your organization would like to volunteer ata similar type of event this fall, please contact Kathryn Woerner, LMSW atThe Drake [email protected], better known as "Coach K".
