August 2016 Sapphire Scene RESIDENT OF THE MONTH CAROL MUNSON I was born in Orth, Minnesota out in the country on August 1, 1930, the sixth child in a family of nine, to Carl and Nellie Gingerich. I don’t remember much of my life there, except for the night before I turned six years old. I went behind a young colt and peed her on her back and she kicked me in the face, cung my lip and rearranging my teeth! My folks took me to an old country doctor who stched up my lip with seven stches. In the fall of 1937, my folks and eight brothers and sisters moved to Montana. My parents and five of us kids rode in a 1930’s car. My three oldest brothers drove a big truck loaded with all our household items...beds, maresses, cooking utensils, trunks, etc., plus a crate of young turkeys and a crate of chickens. Dad was the only one who could drive, so he drove unl dark and then we camped and ate dinner. The boys followed in the truck. Since it was the Depression era, there were few motels, diners or gas staons. When we reached Montana, the boys took a wrong turn and they ended up in Scobey. Dad had all the money and they needed gas so they sold the crate of turkeys and bought gas and joined us again near Missoula, and we ended up in the Bierroot Valley and seled in Victor. In December, my lile brother was born...the only child to be born in a hospital! Sadly, he died when he was two, aer contracng pneumonia. My dad bought a large farm west of Victor. He had seven or eight cows that he and my brothers milked and sold the milk to the local creamery. We always had horses, pigs, chickens and geese, raised a big garden, and Mom canned everything. The oldest two boys worked at various jobs and the rest of us went to school. I always loved school and was a good student. I liked geography and English. I loved to read and draw. We had a typing, shorthand and penmanship class in grade school and I loved that class. I liked to write leers, and sll do. My best friends were my sisters and we entertained ourselves by playing Hopscotch, jumping rope, playing Jacks and playing with our ONE doll that we three girls had to share for a week each! My mother made all of our clothes (boys and girls) on an old treadle sewing machine. We had no television, few magazines or newspapers. We had no electricity unl 1945. Then Mom got a refrigerator and washing machine. The only car was the one Dad drove to work. He was a house painter and worked for Peterson Paint. They did painng and paper-hanging at the Daly Mansion. I was a cheerleader in high school and was a secretary to many clubs. I am most proud of an accomplishment that I and my sister Helen achieved in 1948. I was a senior and Helen was a sophomore in high school. We were the State All Class Tennis Doubles Champions at the tournament held at the university in Missoula. We had no coach, no uniforms, and we had to bum a ride in a car with the track team! We won a gold medal in Girls’ Doubles and I won a silver medal in Singles. I married G. John Moore right aer graduang from high school in 1948 and we had three daughters: Sandy Pet, 65 years old of Darby; Pae Widdifield, 63 years old of Victor; and Luanne Bauman, 60 years old of Corvallis. I have two grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. During some of this me in the ‘70s I worked as a teller at Farmers State Bank in Victor. We divorced when the girls were adults and in 1980 I married Gayle Munson, who I had known since high school. This union brought my two stepsons into the family, as well as four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. We have been happily married for nearly 36 years. We have taken many wonderful trips together. The most fabulous one was to New Zealand for five weeks with our dear friends, Ray and Bey Heasman, and we stayed with Ray’s five sons who live there. Then we have taken all three Amtrak train trips...the northern, the southern and the central routes. We’ve gone to Hawaii, the Panama Canal, Mexico, New York, Washington, D.C. and nearly all the states. We have been very community-minded, belonging and serving many organizaons and clubs. We have belonged to the Victor Community Church for over 50 years and I have served as treasurer for 15 years. We belonged to the commiee that arranged and planned the Victor Senior Center that was completed in 1992. I was the treasurer of that organizaon for 23 years. I have been a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 65 years and have served many years in various offices. I had lived in Victor for 64 years when we sold the ranch and moved to Florence where we bought a new home in a lovely neighborhood. We lived there for 15 years. In 2015 Gayle had a mini-stroke. I broke my ankle and spent two months in a rehab facility. Then Gayle fractured his hip. We couldn’t keep up our yard and garden, so we sold the house and have come here to the Remington to live and be waited on by a wonderful staff of helpers, and have made many new friends, and are enjoying it very much! DEAR DIARY Dear Diary, though late, I just have to say I had the most wonderful, fantasFc day! I walked in town and went to the county fair. I strolled around hoping to see some friends there. I ordered some ice cream when he caught my eye. Tall and slender, with blonde hair- a handsome guy! He caught me looking and flashed a bright smile. Then bold as brass he came to sit awhile. Like a real gentleman, he asked my name. Blushing, I smoothed my dress and asked him the same. To the carnival, he asked to escort me. My heart fluMered like wings of a dove set free. He showed off with the hammer and rang the bell. Won me a prize- threw more balls than I can tell. The carnival lights danced in his dreamy eyes. My true feelings for him I could not disguise. It felt so natural when he took my hand and led the way to the coMon candy stand. We bought a bag of fluffy pink and teal then bought two Fckets for the Ferris wheel. We stood in the line talking as the night wore on. We got in the seat and then the crowd was gone. His lips touched mine- ‘twas carnival night true bliss- tasFng of coMon candy… was my first kiss!
