Message from our President

As I write this snow flakes are falling, though not settling, and I can’t help but yearn for warmer weather. For all that it seems unbelievable that Term 3 is on the horizon already. And no, I don’t know how many shopping days to Christmas, but I do know that Eilean and Karen are already starting to organise the End-of-Year lunch. More on that later, but pencil Friday, December 2 in your diaries. We also thank the duo for organising a very enjoyable Mid-Winter Lunch and Team’s Quiz on July 22. We are still growing. Term 3 starts with 77 new members for the year and 34 courses at Kingston and 3 at Woodbridge to tempt your palate. We welcome back several of our generous regular tutors, among them our very own Gifford, who is back on deck after serious illness. Kaleidoscope this term will feature the natural world, with an especial emphasis on things Tasmanian. A couple of our regular tutors are having time out: Greg The is travelling and Noela Foxcroft is filming – again. Sorry, Bob. I know that you and perhaps some others were looking forward to enrolling in some or all of these courses but we simply don’t have the tutor expertise to offer them at this stage. And don’t watch this space! But do enjoy what we are offering in Term 3. Just don’t forget to enrol during the last week of Term 2, August 15th – 18th. Julie

Monday August 15 Tuesday August 16 ENROL for TERM 3 Thursday August 18

On any one of those three days, bring your class enrolment form along (or fill one out at the corridor table). Please, please, please enrol during that week to make compiling class lists easier. It should also mean that you get into the classes you want and that we don’t cancel courses through perceived lack of interest – only to discover too late that there was in fact enough to run the course. KINGSTON COURSES Monday 9.30 - 11.45 A2 Art Studio (limit 24) Helen Quilty The studio offers a place for relaxation through Art. Discover new creative skills and styles and explore ways of using colour. Take advice on structuring composition and watch demonstrations and techniques. Helen has established an art studio that is still popular after 16+ years of tutoring in both painting and drawing techniques. She is a versatile artist/illustrator and skilled water colourist. Monday 9.30 - 11.30 A3 Mah Jong self-managing Here is your chance to play or learn how to play the ancient Chinese game of Mah Jong. Greg Thé, who usually runs the class, will be travelling overseas, but the class will continue as a self- managing group. Greg introduced the class to mahjong as it is played in China. It is now popular around the world. Any newcomers are very welcome. If you have a Mah Jong set do bring it along. If you don't have your own set, there are some sets available for class use. Monday 10.00 - 11.00 A1 Personal Peace extension (limit 10) Helen Hussey Helen has lead five courses for U3A on Personal Peace, an innovative media-based program to help participants explore the possibility of personal peace and to discover their inner resources. The extension course adds to and extends those and similar topics. Monday 1.30 - 2.30 A1 Agents of Revolution David Leaman David returns to us with another set of lectures to teach and tantalise us. This time it's the story of how two ideas came together after 1850 to utterly transform our world – and lead to processes which maintain the revolution. The precursors of these ideas were “unintended consequences”. It’s the David Leaman version of history from 1700 to 1870, and of the men and ideas that have made our modern world an age of the mere refinement of those ideas. Monday 1.30 - 2.30 A4 Cryptic Crosswords (limit 10) self-managing Cathie’s beginners will continue to work collaboratively to unravel the secrets of success at Cryptic Crosswords, with puzzles supplied by Cathie but reliant on their own resources. welcome. Bring a pen/pencil. Monday 1.30 - 2.30 A1 Chess Ken Hunt With our chess aficionado, Ken, also back from his travels, the Chess class will resume. Other activities will include drama, music and reading and discussion of articles from the adult learners’ magazine, Lingo Newydd. * Newcomers with Welsh acquired elsewhere should consult one of these three tutors to discuss which course would be most suitable for them. ([email protected] / ph: 0409901656) Tuesday 9.00 Field Bushwalking Tas Boskell The walks, of 7 to 15kms, will be on established tracks and trails about the uplands and coasts around Hobart and occasionally further afield. Our rules: maintain respect for others' opinions, although challenging discussion is encouraged. Each participant has an opportunity to speak without interruption, and may express any discomfort about others' opinions. Confidentiality within the group assures members that their opinion stays in the room, thus allowing them to speak freely on the issues involved. Tuesday 10.00 – 11.00 A1 Snippets of Science and Culture Keith Sainsbury We are extremely fortunate to have CSIRO researcher, Keith, son of member Flo Duncan, organize speakers on some current CSIRO research topics and as he says “snippets of science and culture”. Given the recent duress our CSIRO researchers been subjected to, we are especially appreciative of them taking the time to give us this opportunity. Sept 29 Jeff Leis: - How Nemo finds home – or why reef fish babies are all at sea Oct 4 Suzanne Leis: - Armillaria – the fabulous tree-killing fungus Oct 11 Glenys Jones: - Measuring the performances of Tasmania’s national parks and world heritage areas – what’s working and what’s not Oct 18 Herman Mouthaan: - Living remote in the Top End Oct 25 Janet Carding: - Museums in the digital age- how will TMAG thrive in this new era? Tuesday 11.30 -12.30 A1 Painterly Stories Basil Samson Our very popular tutor Basil, whose eclectic range of interests never fails to amaze, returns with another intriguing and entertaining topic. Painterly novels are stories in which the author makes a painting and/or some painter's process of creation germane to the plot. Painters eternalize instants in time whereas narratives deal with progress over time so painterly novels often deal with the relationship between time present and time past. Authors may also digress on themes of creativity, authenticity, fraud, connoisseurship, recognition and possession and relate these to the economics of the art market. In all, what happens when story-tellers take on Fine Art? Tuesday 11.30 -12.30 A2 Weather and Climate Albert Goede Retired Geography lecturer, Albert, will present a series explaining the difference between weather and climate. Amongst other things you will find out about cyclones ' the El Nino Effect, the ozone layer, the greenhouse effect and various aspects of climate change. Tuesday 11.30 - 12.30 A3 Balance your Bones (limit 20) Lyn Lowes This exercise class is specifically designed for our demographic. You will need comfortable, loose clothing. The class will be based around an exercise DVD produced by a Wollongong U3A-er, who is an experienced and qualified exercise instructor and led by one of our own members. Tuesday 1.00 - 2.30 A3 Writing Gladys Conry This course will give the members the opportunity to creatively tap their brains and put it all into the written word. It will concentrate on the method and style of writing, with continuous class evaluation. Gladys likes to work in a positive and easy-going style and welcomes newcomers and inexperienced members, who just have a yearning to write. Tuesday 1.00 – 3.00 A4 Patchwork and Craft self-managing This self-managing sociable group will share knowledge of skills, techniques, ideas and fabrics, wools, cottons. Bring along a portable sewing machine if needed. Novice and experienced patchworkers and embroiderers, tapestry and cross stitchers, knitters and crocheters etc. welcome. Tuesday 1.00 – 3.00 A2 Embroidery & Embellishments Jaylene Seabrook Jaylene will introduce a wide variety of skills, techniques and materials; be it hand applique, use of braids, silk ribbons, French knots, beading, etc.. She will share a range samples to give ideas and inspiration – and will help with your own creations. Bring along some fabric and embroidery cottons. The patchwork class may like to amalgamate with this class. Tuesday 1.30 - 2.30 A1 Nature Kaleidoscope (with a distinctly Tasmanian flavour) various speakers This term’s offerings include: Sept 20 Judi Timms: - Does it matter if animals become extinct? Introductory Spanish Elena Vito Our own member, Elena, a native Spanish speaker, will take an introduction to the Spanish language with an emphasis on ordinary daily communication and travel needs. Thursday 10.00 – 11.00 A1 Physics can be fun. No, really! Richard Gardam Former Science teacher, Richard, will explore some more of the big ideas in Physics. Class questions and discussion welcomed. Thursday 11.00 – 12.30 A2 Advanced Cryptic Crosswords (limit 8) Cathie Lewis Long-term cryptic crossword fiend, Cathie Lewis, will be exploring various methods of solving cryptic clues in a collaborative group. In addition she is happy to give crosswords for ‘homework’ and for the group to work through the solutions the following week. Bring a pen/pencil and paper. Thursday 10.00 – 11.00 A3 Forgotten Civilisations Gifford Causon We all know a little about Rome and Egypt because these were the direct predecessors of our own civilization. But there are others that are of great importance and that have influenced our way of life. We will look at some little known civilisations, starting with the one that startled me most, namely the Indus civilization which was larger than Babylon and Ninevah combined and as important as Egypt. Thursday 10.00 - 11.00 A4 Prose Writing Workshop Glenn Pullen Glenn is taking a break from quizzes, and this term is offering a writing workshop for Wannabes who need a kickstart and for Writers who wannabe better. Gentle guidance and tips on writing short stories, articles, letters to The Editor, family histories etc. The sessions will involve more actual writing than lecturing, so bring paper and pens or ipads. The course may include the occasional grammar and punctuation advice. At least one short story guaranteed by the end of week 1. Members will be encouraged but not compelled to share their work with the group. Thursday 11.30 - 12.30 A3 Balance your Bones (limit 20) Lyn Lowes Lyn will lead this exercise class for mature-age people, the pre-lycra generation. You will need comfortable, loose clothing. The class will be based around an exercise DVD produced by a Wollongong U3A member, who is an experienced and qualified exercise instructor. Several NSW U3As are using it with great enthusiasm. Thursday 11.30 - 12.30 A1 Much ado about Shakespeare Eileen Levett England 2016: awash with celebrations commemorating Shakespeare’s death, 400 years ago. England 1698: Shakespeare was in trouble; the lease on ‘The Theatre’ was about to run out. He was taken to the highest Court in the land, the Privy Council and banned from occupying the new indoor Blackfriars Theatre. The Globe had not even been built. He had been implicated in the “Throckmorton Affair”, one of many attempts on Elizabeth I’s life and was being watched by Walsingham, the Queen’s notorious spy-master. Life and livelihood was precarious at the best of times, but this was the worst. Listen to and participate in the controversies, the petty Court intrigues, the politics of the times and see Shakespeare in a totally different light. See how he avenged his adversaries, poked fun at the mightiest in the land – and wrote one of the first great horror stories! Thursday 1.00 - 2.30 A3 Bridge Club self managing Bridge players can come along and play a game – and get assistance from each other. Former tutor, Lena, will drop by periodically for advice etc. Newcomers with Bridge playing experience are welcome. Thursday 1.30 - 2.30 A2 Poetry for Pleasure Maggie McCabe Do you enjoy reading and listening to poetry? Then this might be for you. Lovers of poetry come together each week to read, hear and share their favourite poems in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. Perhaps you might have an original piece that you might like to share with the group? Please bring along one or three shortish poems. They may be serious, funny or whimsical but do come and enjoy! Thursday 1.30 - 2.30 A1 Gardening David and Jonah Long-time organic gardening enthusiast and initiator of the Lenah Valley Community Garden (and Australian Gardener of the Year in 2000), David Stephens, and Jonah Gouldthorpe (and friends) of the ‘Still Gardening’ group, which is specifically aimed at gardening for ‘mature age’ people, will present a series of talks on growing your own

food and gardening in general. David will present talks on Sept 22, Oct 6, 13, 20 and 27. The Still Gardening topics will be: Sept 29: Gardening – pathway to wellness and independence Nov 3: No dig gardening and gardening in pots Nov 10: Raised beds Nov 17: Mulch and compost Nov 24: Waterwise gardening Friday 10.00 - 12.30 Friday Flicks Jean Newton The group will meet in the comfort of a private home to view and discuss films over a cuppa. The first film morning will be Friday, September 23 at 10 am. The group will then decide the date for their next film, so you will need to be there! (Enrollees will be contacted re the first venue!) WOODBRIDGE COURSES Monday 1.30 - 3.30 Westwinds Readers and Writers self-managing Readers and Writers group is open to anyone with an interest in writing styles, including poetry, prose, memoir and young adult fiction. If you have an interest, passion or curiosity about words and language then step through the door bringing your ideas, thoughts, tragedies, work in progress and laughter. Tuesday 10:30 - 11:30 approx. Westwinds Musical Tardis Val Pindell Travel with us through time and space, discovering music as we go. 10th century plain chant not to your taste? Wait five minutes and you might hear opera from Handel or the great violinists of 17th century Italy. Still not inspired? What about 19th century Viennese waltzes or folk music from the USA? Try us. You’ll never know what will be on the program. Friday 10.30 - 11.30 Westwinds Meditation Margaret Jacobs Meditation gives us the ability to become mentally still and balanced, and helps us develop awareness. Without awareness we live as if in a fog, reacting blindly to outside stimuli and seemingly at the mercy of external influences. But the more we relax into stillness, the more awareness we develop. Then not only do we become more peaceful but there is also less wear and tear on our bodies. Anxiety being reduced, energy is enhanced and healing facilitated. Our mood is lightened and life becomes more enjoyable. Further, the concentration we develop helps to strengthen our mental faculties.

2. A Music Tutor! As you know we lost our long-term music tutor, John Culliton, earlier this year. We are looking for someone who loves music and is happy to put together a program each week and to introduce/chat about the pieces or composers or.... If you would like to do it or know someone who might, please alert 'the kitchen office'.

3. Volunteers to be class reps. U3A depends on volunteers to operate, be they committee members or tutors or class reps. We rely on class reps to keep the class roll and to just ensure that their class runs smoothly. So please volunteer. It takes so little time or effort to help out in this way.

4. Anyone who has Mah Jong tile boards that they could loan to the Mah Jong group, please drop them in to the group any Monday morning in A3.

Items of Note:

• Visitors are welcome to attend our U3A courses. Please inform the course Rep when you bring a visitor.

• If you don’t enrol for a course before the start of term, you are welcome to enrol at any later

stage with the Course Rep.

• Don’t forget to keep your eye on the U3A Notice Board for upcoming events etc and members’ literary contributions.

• Please be aware of new members to U3A and make them welcome. A friendly greeting can make a difference.

• We do not issue receipts, except for payment in person on enrolment day at the beginning of the year.

• During the first week of term there will be a lunch time course of “see how it is done”. This will explain how to set up equipment for classes.

• In the case of a collapse, or seemingly serious medical condition of any member – as part of our “duty of care”, a committee member (or other) is to call an ambulance on 000 without consultation. The ‘patient’ and ambulance personnel can take it from there.

U3A Kingborough wishes to thank Catryna Bilyk, Senator for Tasmania, for her generous support in the production of this newsletter.
