Pastor Paul
This is the article I wrote for the August issue of the “UpClose” publication. The
message is pertinent “in house” as well. Looking forward to all of the events and excitement
that comes to us in the fall.
“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… everywhere you go…” Oh, groan. I imagine
some of you groaning at the idea of Christmas already. Others, like me, you just heard that song
in your head as you read those words now, didn’t you? Admit it. But why does the idea of
Christmas in August put some people off? I think it’s because we fear life moving too quickly. It’s
too soon. Let’s not race ahead of ourselves. Let’s slow down and enjoy today and this new season
beginning now.
August is a transitional month for many. The new school year begins. And some parents
sing another Christmas song: “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” I share that sentiment
too. It is a wonderful time of the year. It’s still hot but the majority of the hot months are now
behind us. The school year brings a bunch of new activities. And we begin looking forward to
Labor Day, Trunk or Treat, Thanksgiving, cooler temperatures, a lot more hiking, and a lot of our
friends come back to Mesa in the fall.
Here at Hosanna we are celebrating the beginning of the new school year at Little Palms
Preschool. Our school is so much fun. Our staff and I just love getting to know all the new kids
and families and we love to welcome the returning families too. When school begins we always
reassure a lot of parents who drop off their child at school for the very first time and some
celebrate, most get quite teary eyed, at least on that first day or two. But we assure them that we
will love their child like a child of God. When you bring your child to Little Palms Preschool at
Hosanna Lutheran Church you will be welcomed into our family. And then, it really is the most
wonderful time of the year.
As our preschool year gets under way, the fun and laughter, the joy and the growth makes
the time seem like it’s flying. We are committed to giving your child the best foundation for their
education. They will learn and grow and be so well prepared for the years of school soon to
follow. And those years will go so quickly. Time will go too fast. But they will know that they are
loved by the Lord who has made them His own children too. Enrollments are happening now so
call us soon at (480)986-9436 – School Office, (480)984-1414 – Church Office
Thanks everyone. God’s Peace be with you always.
In Jesus’ Service to you,
Pastor Paul
HSYG NEWS!!
I am pleased to introduce Jessica Smothers and Sonjah Frank as our new leaders for the High
School Youth Group. Jessica and Sonjah will partner together to lead the Wednesday evening
Youth Group gatherings, Bible Studies, games and servant events. They will begin on August 16th
with a game night for all High School Youth Group members AND all potential Confirmation Class
students. The meal is served at 5:30 and group time begins at 6:00.
Sharon Owens will also be leading an Adult Bible Study group on Wednesday nights beginning on
the 16th as well. Come for the meal and enjoy some time in God’s Word together.
Message from the Treasurer:
With the recent Ordination and Installation of another son of the congregation, Joe Leech, I
wanted to take the opportunity to talk about how the Scrip program contributed to this auspicious
occasion. For the last 3 sons of the congregation to attend seminary and to be called and ordained
(Chris Eldridge, Stephen Reynolds and now Joe Leech), Hosanna has gifted each with a set of
stoles. You will see in the picture below the set of stoles presented to Joe Leech by Pastor Frank on
behalf of Hosanna at Joe’s ordination and installation on June 3.
These stoles were purchased with the proceeds from the Scrip program. In the second picture, you
will see Pastor Paul wearing a new robe, also purchased with scrip proceeds.
Since we first began the scrip program, we have used scrip rebates totaling over $5,000 to
purchase various items for Hosanna including equipment for the church and preschool (computers,
projectors, smart boards, etc.), Pastor Frank’s new robe, stoles for new pastors, and many other
miscellaneous items. We have raised a significant amount of money through scrip, but not nearly
as much as we could be raising. Currently, only a small percentage of the congregation purchases
gift cards through Scrip. In fact, over 90% of the funds raised have been the result of one family’s
purchases. If more people participated, we could grow our available funds significantly. There are
no membership fees or application fees. The families of Hosanna simply pay face value for the
scrip gift cards they purchase. If you buy a $10 Starbucks card, you have $10 to spend. Hosanna
“earns” money by purchasing the gift cards at a discount. If you purchase that $10 Starbucks card,
Hosanna pays $9.30 for the card, earning the church $0.70. Not a lot on a per card basis, but with
volume these discounts add up. Discounts range from 1% to as high as 25% with most retailers
offering between 4% and 8%. We don’t have to sell anything or spend any additional money—we
raise funds by using scrip to pay for things in our existing shopping budget. That’s the beauty of
scrip.
In addition to purchasing physical cards, some retailers also offer electronic gift cards that can be
purchased over the internet and used almost immediately (ScripNow), eliminating the need to
know in advance what retailers you might need cards for in any particular week. Also, some
retailers offer the ability to reload additional monies on existing gift cards earning additional
rebates on those amounts.
There are over 750 participating retailers so anyone should be able to find a gift card for personal
use or for someone on your gift list. Gift cards make great gifts for birthdays, weddings,
anniversaries, Christmas, graduation, confirmation and any other special occasion or for every day
purchases. Gift cards are available for discount stores, grocery stores, gas and auto, home
improvement, dining, online and catalog shopping, department stores, health and beauty, prepaid
debit cards, electronics and office, travel, sporting goods, specialty retailers, home décor and
clothing and accessories. A complete list of participating retailers can be found at glscrip.com. See
Cyndi Arneson or Janet Christie to learn how to make sure you are registered as a Hosanna
member so that your rebates are properly applied.
Just for grins, I went back through my personal check register to see all of the purchases we have
made so far this year (January through May) using funds from our checking account. Had we used
scrip for every retailer with which we did business that participates in the scrip program we would
have earned over $200 for scrip. We have used a lot of scrip this year (over $1,000 in gift card
purchases), but also made purchases at participating retailers without utilizing scrip. If everyone at
Hosanna would try to use scrip as much as possible, we would have even more funds to use for
special purchases or just to contribute towards special projects.
We also participate in rebate programs with grocery stores (CARTS) and amazon.com affording
additional opportunities to earn money for Hosanna on everyday purchases we would be making
anyway. Thrivent members at Hosanna can also direct Thrivent Choice dollars to Hosanna.
Directions are available for all of these programs. Please ask Cyndi or Janet regarding scrip,
grocery cards and Amazon.com programs.

While financial results continue to be fairly positive, we have really just begun the summer season
when contributions go down and expenses go up. Please continue to remember Hosanna in your
list of donations so that we can continue the ministry we have pledged to support.
God’s continued blessings to you all.

It’s Back to School time! We are so excited for another year to start at Little Palms Preschool! Join
us for the Back to School Blessing on Saturday, August 5that 4:00 p.m., followed by an Open
House.
The classrooms look fantastic – so cheery and colorful and so welcoming to the new students and
their parents. The first day of School is Monday, August 14th. Registration for 2017 is currently at
18 students 13 Students for Pre-Kindergarten Class (8 students are enrolled 5 days a week, 4
students are enrolled 4 days a week, and 1 student is enrolled 3 days a week) and the Preschool
class has 5 students enrolled (1 student for 5 days a week, 2 students for 3 days a week and 2
students for 2 days a week). Most of those students enrolled are from last year’s school families,
summer camp and recommendations of families whose children attended Little Palms. In August
and September Hosanna Little Palms Preschool typically start to fill up our classrooms with
additional students.
This summer we offered a 5 week Hosanna Summer Camp. Camp was a huge success. We were
blessed with 25 total campers (16 different families) this year. For the first four weeks we had 12-
15 campers attending and the last week we had 20 campers attending.
Please pray for our teachers and staff and all the students. We are so blessed at Hosanna to offer
a Preschool that is based on Christian principles, is affordable, and has small class size and loving
and experienced teachers. We also are grateful to be able to offer scholarships to help families
who need financial assistance. The Lutheran church has a very long history of promoting
Lutheran schools so that children can grow up learning about the love of Jesus and studying God’s
word. We are proud to offer a preschool with many advantages such as kindles, smart boards,
creative projects, music, art, science and being able to pray and sing songs about Jesus, our
Savior! Our students are also better prepared for kindergarten because of our small class size and
specialized curriculum. If you would like to be a part of this exciting ministry, please consider
joining our Board of Education. We meet only once a month for about an hour and a half. We
would enjoy your thoughts on how we can improve our school and continue to offer the best
preschool education in the East Valley.
Thank you, and may God continue to bless our church and school! We give thanks to Him for His
faithfulness to us every day.
With a grateful heart,
Cindy Koch
Feed the Families
The “Living Room” (formerly referred to as Wednesday Evening Family Night) resumes on
Wednesday, August 16, 2017. The evening is designed for spiritual growth of our congregation.
One way to help families attend this event is to provide a meal at 5:30 pm. They can come straight
from school and work without having to worry about how to get fed and be at Hosanna on time
for class that starts at 6:00 pm. We need your help with making this opportunity available to
provide fellowship and build-up the community of believers. Areas where you can serve in this
weekly meal are through shopping, preparing food, serving the meal, and clean-up. If you are
interested in being a part of this important role in any aspects of this meal, please contact Sharon
at 480-407-7009.
Hosanna’s Sunday School is looking for folks who have gifts to share with our youngest members and visitors. Do you desire to learn more about the Bible? To help children see the Bible in a new light? To see children learn the context & application of biblical text and then apply it to their everyday lives? Do you want to make a difference in a child’s faith life? If so, Sunday School is for you! QUALIFICATIONS: A sincere desire to impact the lives of children and to share God’s word! You need not be a biblical expert to serve! The Son Seekers curriculum makes teaching easy and fun. The team is available to help you to be ready. Persons of all ages (from High School youth to long-time members) are encouraged to get involved. TIME REQUIREMENT: You may commit to the number of Sundays and the dates that work best for your schedule; we hope to create a rotating schedule so that you get a full and rewarding experience. Each Sunday School session is 45 minutes long. RESPONSIBILITIES: You will be provided the lesson guide in advance so you may wish to do personal reading of the biblical text and review the discussion questions/activity ideas for the lesson; the team is ready to help you select and prepare the activities or you may feel free to plan some of your own if you wish. Arrive to the Sunday School rooms after early service and spend time with a small grade-cluster of children from 9:30 until 10:15 a.m. Or start your morning with a great group of kids and follow it up with worship by attending the 10:30 service. BENEFITS: Rejuvenate your personal spiritual life! Watch God’s shaping hand in a child’s life! Enjoy a great sense of accomplishment and pride in being part of something life changing!
WANTED: VBS Planning Meeting
Your gifts and talents are WANTED at this year’s 4 day Vacation Bible
School during fall break and plans are already underway. The theme
is, you guessed it, WANTED! We are excited to provide this
opportunity to our church members, pre-school families and the local
community. A new style is being designed for this year’s VBS that will
kick off on Sunday, October 8, 2017. The afternoon will begin with a
lunch at 12:00 following the 10:30 worship service. The activities for
the day will end at 3:00 pm. VBS will then continue on Monday,
October 9, Tuesday, October 10, and Wednesday, October 11 evenings starting at 5:00 with a
meal followed by the program from 5:30 – 8:00pm. We need your help with planning and serving
at this event. A planning meeting is being held on September 16, 2017 at 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
followed by Pastor’s Ministry Forum at 10:00 a.m. in the Learning Center. Be watching for sign-
up sheets and praying that this will be an impactful event that will touch many lives with the
Gospel. If you live out of town for the summer months and will be returning to Mesa before mid-
October, we would love for you to be in connect with us and let us know how we can partner
together in this mission as the family of Hosanna.
