We thoughtfully move through time and scripture purposefully – paying special attention to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and to Christ’s church. The Church Year begins with the Season of Advent – as we anticipate the ultimate arrival of God’s kingdom while also preparing to celebrate Christ’s birth. Following Advent we celebrate Christmas for a short time and then move into the season of Epiphany. Epiphany is the season of light when we pay special attention to the word about God’s coming to earth spreading and bringing joy to hearers and believers. After Epiphany we enter into the season of Lent. Lent is the 40 days before Easter where we focus in on Jesus’ journey to the cross and through the grave. Easter is the next season where we celebrate the resurrection of Christ and the gift of new life. Following the season of Easter – we move into Pentecost which will take us from Spring, through summer and to the coming season of Advent. The season of Pentecost focuses on the growth of the church and what it means to be a follower of this one named Jesus. The seasons of the church year have a beautiful rhythm that has defined much of how I think about the world. A number of years ago a new season for the church year was created. It’s called the Season of Creation and its intention is to lift up and focus on the gift of God’s created world and our call to be good stewards of that gift.  Here at Lord of Life, the month of August will be dedicated to the Season of Creation. Come and worship and be invited to dwell deeply in God’s creative energy. And then go out into God’s world to bask in its beauty, to be renewed by its energy and to do what you can to fiercely protect it.  Grateful for this Season, Pastor Erika

“For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

One of the many things I love about our Lutheran tradition is that it follows the seasons of the church year.

Grateful for this Season,

Pastor Erika

Attitude of Gratitude VBS was held July 8-10. We had 46 three-year-olds through fourth graders in attendance. They had a great week of learning about being thankful to God, for Jesus, family, friends, and taking care of the earth was emphasized. We did many hands-on activities. We flew paper airplanes with our Bible verses on them, played with the parachute, read books, delivered thank you notes throughout our church, talked about respect in church, and they even exercised with the SAIL class. Thank you to all our youth and adults who helped during the week!

Let us come before him with

Thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs

of praise!

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A STEPHEN MINISTER, AND WHAT DO YOU RECEIVE IN RETURN?

Okay, admit it. Stephen Ministry has crossed your mind a few times. You might even have picked up a brochure or talked with one of our pastors about it. But now you want to take a closer look at the idea of becoming a Stephen Minister. You’re wondering: Is this right for me?

The following are some guidelines that might help you in your decision making:

GIFTS A Stephen Minister is a person with a gift of mercy, who shows compassion and gives encouragement to and intercedes for those he or she cares for. Many Stephen Ministers say that they receive much more from the caring relationship with their care receiver than they give.

COMMITMENT A Stephen Minister devotes time and energy to this ministry. In return a Stephen Minister has the chance to participate in meaningful ministry, make a major difference in another person’s life, and grow as a joyous child of God.

TRAINING A Stephen Minister completes 50 hours of training (2-1/2 hours per week for about 4 months) before ever meeting with a care receiver. He or she learns about listening, assertiveness, confidentiality, and many other aspects of caregiving. After completing the initial training, he or she engages in continuing education. Stephen Ministers find that their relationships become richer and deeper at home, at church, at work, and with friends.

DEDICATED SERVICE A Stephen Minister serves wholeheartedly. This isn’t a casual ministry. It involves prayer, thought, consideration, study, and commitment. In return, the Stephen Minister receives grateful thanks from his or her care receiver, our Stephen Leaders, the congregation, and our Lord.

ACCOUNTABILITY A Stephen Minister is accountable to God, the congregation, the Stephen Leaders, the other Stephen Ministers, and the care receiver. In return he or she receives support, encouragement, and guidance in Small Group Peer Supervision.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING A Stephen Minister is open to adjusting and adapting his or her caregiving to fit the needs of the care receiver. He or she learns more about caregiving at each meeting with the care receiver (weekly for about one hour) and at each supervision session (twice monthly). Stephen Ministry is an experience of continuous learning, growth, and joy.

IS STEPHEN MINISTRY FOR YOU? A new training class for Stephen Ministry is starting soon. The Holy Spirit may be calling you to the joy, commitment, growth, meaning, training, service, and care of being a Stephen Minister. Pray for God’s guidance as you consider this opportunity.

The Scripture tells us to pray for each other (James 5:16). As a body we pray for our congregation, alphabetically rotating through our church family on an annual basis. Each week we will pray for specific Lord of Life families. Although you may not know each member of our congregation, our God listens to the prayers we bring on each other‘s behalf before his throne. Please make a commitment to include your brothers and sisters at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in your daily prayers.

To our partners in ministry,

With cloth and thread, metal and wood, clay and stone, you have generously donated your creative skills to the Northeastern Minnesota Synod quilt auction and marketplace. This year your generosity helped raise $14,647.82 for the ELCA Hunger Appeal.

The theme for this year’s assembly was, Just Peace Accompaniment; Doing God’s Mission Together. Through the work of your hands and the talents you share, you are helping in God’s mission to bring peace and justice to the world.

Wishing you a summer of joy, peace, and maybe time to be creative!

The Synod Quilt and Marketplace Team

Coming Up Roses

A rose can be quite eloquent When standing all alone;

It needs no vast accompaniment, No pompous, royal throne,

For beauty is not always found in suave sophistication,

But often stands just by itself As simply God’s creation!
