MISSION STATEMENT
Embraced in God’s love through Jesus Christ, Calvary Lutheran Church is called
to proclaim the Good News of God’s saving grace,
to nurture spiritual growth, and
to care for all God’s creation.
“All things come from you and of your own have we given you” – 1 Chronicles 29:14
Dear members of Calvary Lutheran,
Often, I come across a book or a speaker or an event that inspires me so much that I
cannot help but share something about it with everyone I meet. As I’m sure many of you have
noticed by now, I have been hugely inspired by Mark Allan Powell’s book, Giving to God: The
Bible’s Good News about Living a Generous Life. I have been enjoying this book and the
thoughts that are in it so much I hope to one day use it as the “study guide” in a congregational
bible study on Biblical Stewardship. Until then however, letters and proclamation articles will
have to suffice.
The following is a direct quote from the aforementioned book that I find quite
compelling when thinking about the ministries my family and I commit to financially.
“Give from the heart!” people say. But Jesus seemed to speak of something else: Give
where you want your heart to be, and let your heart catch up. Don’t just give to things
you care about. Give to things you want to care about. Don’t decide the amount of
your giving by how much you care, but by how much you want to care. . . Put your
treasure where you want your heart to be, and Jesus promises, your heart will go
there.”
Daily we thank God for all our abundant gifts. Enclosed in your Stewardship Packets are
the 2020 pledge cards. Before you complete the card, please look carefully at all the materials
and remember that practicing Stewardship is part of all we do as people of faith. A child of God
is a Steward of God. It is who we are, it is what we do. Take this time as a time for prayer, a
time for conversation with God, a time to remember the abundance of God’s love that has
been given to us all, and a time to contemplate on where you want your heart to be.
Many blessings to each of you,
Pastor Paul and the Stewardship Team

Announcements
Council Communications
Council will not meet in July and will instead meet August 6th. Council minutes for June
have already been approved and posted in the New Fellowship Hall.
Care of Creation Team
When we talk about stewardship in congregations, we often are referring to money and
sometimes to our time. But we are also called to be stewards of creation. We read in Genesis
that our job as humans is to care for all that God has given us, and that is becoming more and
more critical as the world becomes more polluted and stripped of resources. So, it is time for
Calvary to give more focus to this scripture-based calling. While some initial ideas are
formulating, it would be best to do this together and to hear from others who also share a
passion (whether life-long or newly ignited) for this kind of action. We will look both internally
at how we do life in this congregation, and externally to how we can be more involved with
efforts in the community and the wider world. Join Pastor Lauren on Sunday, August 4th after
10:00 worship for an initial meeting to brainstorm together what this might look like.
Welcome Back Forest Hill Staff
August 20 at 11am: Calvary helps provide by-weekly nutritional backpacks for students and it
seems logical to also provide a time of support for their teachers too. We will provide lunch
and a supply table once again this AUGUST 20th. We need volunteers to help prepare luncheon
items and also want to offer a Teacher Supply Table again. Gloria Kilpatrick and Arlene
Robinson are signing up luncheon volunteers during July. You may also volunteer via Mail,
Phone, or Text to Arlene Robinson phone: 828-584-1657 email: [email protected]
We have surveyed the teachers for their “priority list” of useful items and want to share it with
you for your shopping between now and August 18th (last collection Sunday).
Here is their “useful list” of supplies, including size and amount where pertinent:
- dry erase markers (maybe 15 or 20 packs)
- small sticky note pads
- (a multi-way tie)
-Kleenex (small boxes - lots)
-pencils ( - maybe 50)
-dividers with pockets
- (a multi-way tie)
-crayons (24 count)
-handheld pencil sharpeners (50)
-2’”clear tape
-gallon Ziploc bags (25)
- (those with only one mention)
-Clorox wipes
-Hi-Liters
-white-out tape
-file folders (maybe one box of 50)
-dry erase board cleaner
-Sharpies
-paper clips
-multi-colored construction paper (8-10
pkgs. of several colors)
-stick pens
You will find collection boxes in the old fellowship hall marked “FOREST HILL TEACHER
WELCOME” where you can deposit your contribution and save our teachers some of their out-
of-pocket expenses this coming year. Call Arlene Robinson (828-584-1657) or Garry Vogelpohl
(828-406-1706) if you have questions or need clarification. Thanks for your part in this Blessing
of both Kids and School Staff!
Welcome back Will Duncan
Will Duncan has returned from his year in Cambodia with Young Adults in Global
Mission. On Sunday August 18th he will share his experience with us, both in worship and
during the “Pork Tacos for El Salvador” event. Please come to hear and see what God is up to in
the Body of Christ around the globe!!!
Pulled Pork Tacos for El Salvador!!!!!
Sunday, August 18 after the 10:00 service PLEASE come, eat a few tacos, and leave a
free will offering! We will be raising money for beans, rice, and dry powdered milk for the
poorest of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in Brisa de Vale in El Salvador. These folks are largely
subsistence farmers who need help with food to fend off hunger. These are the least of these of
whom Jesus spoke. They have very little in material goods. So Come Eat with US!!!!
Zen Tubing
It’s that time of year again to spend a day floating together down the French Broad
River! On Saturday, September 7th, we will depart the church parking lot at 10:00am, to arrive
at Zen Tubing in Asheville around 11:00am. You can bring food and drinks to enjoy lunch while
we float, too! It is $20/person and the youngest age allowed is 4yrs. The tubes do have bottoms
to them, so small children will not fall through. See Pastor Lauren or Pastor Paul with any
questions, and call (828-437-0780 or email ([email protected]) the Office to sign up by
September 1st.
Rally Day Ministry Fair
Not sure about all those things listed on your Time and Talent sheets each year? Feeling
like it is time to try a new way of serving in the church? New to Calvary and hoping to learn
more about the ministries here? Just like a good excuse for fellowship and cooking out? You’re
in luck! We will be holding a Ministry Fair on Rally Day, September 8th, after our 11:00 worship.
Enjoy food and fellowship while you visit a variety of booths from each of our committees to
learn about (and maybe even sign up for) the many ways we serve the church and the
community here at Calvary. Megan will be running some activities for our kids (games, face
painting, etc) as well! See you there!
Kinder Milestone and Blessing of the Backpacks
On Sunday August 25, 2019 at the 10:00am service, we will be recognizing Asher Keller,
Sarah Yates, and Francie Jarrell as they enter into Kindergarten for the 2019-2020 School year.
We will also be blessing all students and their backpacks as they begin the new school year.
Bring your backpacks to church!
