Change As I think back over my life, I recall all the changes that have taken place. Perhaps the most eternal changing process of all is the process of education. My life was never the same after my first day of elementary school. I was surrounded by kids my age, the majority of whom I had never seen before in my life. I recall very vividly the change that took place in my life as I went from elementary to Intermediate School and from Intermediate to High School. As I moved through the educational process, not only did my status change as a student but so did my physical surroundings. The classrooms were different, the teachers were different and my fellow students were different. In Intermediate School, the voices of my comrades changed, some earlier than others. And the girls we picked on in elementary school looked different. We still liked to pick on them, but now in a different way. One of the major changes in my life was when I decided to go to college. In 1973 I left the family farm to attend Virginia Tech. As I look back, I realize going to college at this point in my life was a change I was not ready for. After one semester, I withdrew from college and returned to the family farm. Many of our families at St. Paul's, parents and students, are experiencing how having a child in college can change the family. There is the "void" that is most noticeable; an empty seat at the dinner table, the silence that comes when the sibling left behind has no one to fight with, and probably the most tormenting for parents, a child's empty bedroom. But we survive. By the grace of God we survive. I always read the account of Moses leading the Children of Israel out of the land of Egypt with a smile on my face. The writer of the Exodus account tells us that Moses and his followers had not even crossed the Red Sea before the Hebrews began to complain. "Weren't there enough graves in Egypt?" (14:1) “Didn't we tell you before this would happen?" (14:12). It is certainly true that these responses by the Hebrews grew primarily out of fear as they watched the soldiers of Pharaoh gaining on them in the distance. But I would also propose that their unwillingness to face the challenge before them added to their anxiousness. This attitude is reflected by their willingness to "remain slaves" in Egypt, where at least they could sit around "pots of meat and have all the food they wanted" (16:3). The grace of God was sufficient however for the Hebrews. As a nation, they endured the change in their lives. I believe the power to endure change in our lives, both personal and corporate, comes from knowing that God truly cares about our future. I believe God has been active in the many changes that have occurred in my life. I believe God will be active in the changes in the life of this congregation. However, even though God cares, change is still scary. Even though God cares, we will need time to grieve over the past. In the end, if there ever is an end, the grace of God prevails. Let us continue to walk boldly into the future knowing that in all things, God is walking with us. Let us commit ourselves to pray for guidance as we work together for the God we serve. Let our anxiety be quieted through knowing that God's will is at work at St. Paul's. God's Blessings, Pastor Pat August 2019 For Members and Friends of St. Paul’s UCC Fleetwood

Change

As I think back over my life, I recall all the changes that have taken place. "Weren't there enough graves in Egypt?" The newly formed school board of St. Paul's UCC Preschool met on Monday, July 8, 2019. The board consists of eleven members: Six members from the congregation, three representatives of the school community (parents, relatives of students enrolled in the preschool or others having an interest in the school program), and both the senior pastor and associate pastor of St. Paul's UCC Church.

Officers and Church members are: President- Marcia Moll, Vice President- Tina Koch,

Secretary-Dennis Boyer, Ann Heinly, Barbara Hoffman, and Vicki Garl. Esther Schultz is the only parent member at this time. .

During the meeting Kim Bastian, early childhood consultant, addressed the need for us to become agents of change on behalf of young children. Change must happen for us to become a quality preschool. Kim will continue her work with both the school board and staff as we plan and prepare for developmentally appropriate practices that emphasize hands-on-learning. Beverly A. Thomas Interim Director

ST. PAUL'S BOOK GROUP: Please join St. Paul's Book Group at 7:00 on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 in the lounge to discuss Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak. This novel is described as "An unforgettable and sweeping family saga is from the storyteller who gave us the

extraordinary bestseller The Book Thief. The breathtaking story of five brothers who bring each other up in a

world run by their own rules. As the Dunbar boys love and fight and learn to reckon with the adult world, they

discover the moving secret behind their father’s disappearance. At the center of the Dunbar family is Clay, a

boy who will build a bridge—for his family, for his past, for greatness, for his sins, for a miracle. The question

is, how far is Clay willing to go? And how much can he overcome? For further information or questions please contact Mary Ann Hayes (610-796-9044) or Sharon Dreibelbis (610-916-4848). SPONSORING GIFTS TO THE CHURCH: As we approach the fall of 2019, it is time to begin planning for the Sunday morning gifts to the church for the coming year. These gifts include the altar flowers, the bulletins, The Upper Room publication and special flower tributes. For 2020 the cost of the bulletins will be $35.00 per week and for The Upper Room booklet $60.00 per month both of which are payable to the church. The cost of the flowers is determined by and payable to the florist. We will continue to utilize the services of Tracey's Flowers in Fleetwood to supply the flowers for church on a Sunday morning. The church secretary, Samantha Wolf, will place the flower order with Tracey unless you, as the sponsor, choose to order the flowers from another florist. If you do choose another florist, please let Sammy know your wishes when she contacts you for the wording to be placed in the bulletins. The schedule of gifts for 2020 does not automatically carry over from the previous year; therefore, we will begin filling in 2020 Sundays in September, 2019. Please stop by the table in the narthex to sign up for the Sunday you wish to sponsor one of the weekly gifts. You may also contact Sharon Dreibelbis at 610-916-4848 to indicate your preference or obtain additional information. Philharmonic Band: The Annual Summer Concert by the Philharmonic Band, under the direction of Jay A. Smith, will be on Sunday August 18th, 6:00 p.m. in the Fleetwood Park. The concert is sponsored by the Home Association of the Fleetwood American Legion. Refreshments will be available starting at 5:00 p.m. Rain date will be on Monday, August 19 at 6:00 p.m. Come out and enjoy a good old fashioned band concert by your local band. If you have any questions you can call Jay A. Smith at 610-944-0727.
