It was in the 1960’s that droves of Filipino healthcare professionals, mostly physi-cians, immigrated to the United States

in search of better opportunities. Because of perceived discrimination against foreign med-ical graduates, a number of pioneering Filipi-no-American physicians under the leadership of Dr. Jesus Bacala, the former Dean of the UST School of Nursing, first got together on May 7, 1971 at 878 N. Gardner, Scottsburg, Indiana and braved the harsh winter weather and haz-ardous roads in the subsequent months that fol-lowed and voted unanimously to promote their common interests and goals amidst the aroma of Filipino delicacies including lechon, suman, dinuguan, adobo, manggang hilaw and bagoong alamang. And thus was born the Indiana Phil-

ippine Medical Association. While adversity might have triggered their coming together, it was the joy of close camaraderie that kept them together. It was originally intended to be pure-ly a social organization and remained so for years. In more recent years however, more of the members became involved in disaster relief and medical missions in cooperation with other established organizations.

The idea of IPMA becoming more directly in-volved in these charitable endeavors first came about in 2003-2004 during the term as Presi-dent of Dr. Ferdinand Ramos when he request-ed for help for a medical-surgical mission that his UST Medicine Class was conducting in San Fernando, La Union. The Association unan-imously voted to allot no more than 10 % of its “expendable funds” not to exceed $3000 for

the charitable project of choice of the outgoing President.

But the biggest step in this direction was tak-en by IPMA during the term of Dr. Delilah Tapia in 2012 when its fund-raising efforts that revolved around the 40th Induction Ball was devoted towards funding a medical mission in Davao del Norte in cooperation with the UST Medical Alumni Association of America and the ACS Foundation. Although not officially a project of IPMA, the same missionary team returned the following year to Cagayan Prov-ince mostly composed of THINK (Terre Haute Indiana Kami) members hosted by the Antonio family headed by Congressman Patrick Antonio and Governor Bong Antonio.

Like most Filipino-American medical organiza-tions, the biggest problem that confronts IPMA is the dwindling membership partly because of the aging population of its current members a significant number of whom are already retir-ing leading to natural attenuation, coupled with the greater difficulty for younger physicians to immigrate to the United States. We still feel though that there is still a great number of Fili-pino-American physicians who are not includ-ed in our roster that we need to reach out to. All out effort is being undertaken to get them involved in out Association. We also realize that we need to network with other non-medi-cal Fil-Am organizations to grow our influence as a Filipino community in the Hoosier State. We have common interests that we can nurture for a better tomorrow.

Dr. Jesus C. Bacala served several roles. He was a nurse, phy-

sician, professor and dean, author, poet, organizer and a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Dr. Bacala was born in Maa-sin, Leyte, Philippines. He graduated with an RN degree in 1936: and a degree in med-icine from the University of Santo Thomas in 1943. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II and was attached to the 8th Regiment as a Captain. After the war, he started his residency in

Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Santo Thom-as University. In 1949, he spoke at the IV International Congress of Catholic Doctors in Rome where he presented a study on Artificial Spousal Insemination, which was publically endorsed by His Holiness, Pope Pius VII. (Time Magazine Oct. 10, 1949). He went to Madrid, Spain for one year for postgraduate training as a Fellow at the Instituto de Cultura Hispanica. He contin-ued residency training in St. Louis, Missouri for 3 years and in Louisville, Kentucky for 2 years. Upon returning home to Manila, he served as the Dean of the College of Nurs-ing at the University of Santo Tomas. He also served as an Associate Professor in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. During his tenure, he authored six nursing textbooks and edited the Santo Tomas Nurs-

ing Journal and the Philippine Journal of Nursing. In August of 1967, Dr. Bacala and his family returned to the United States and settled to start a practice in a small town in southern Indiana. In Scottsburg, he continued to be active by organizing several associations including the Fil-Am Society of Ken-tucky & Southern Indiana [Fil-Am Society, 1970]; Indiana Philippine Medical Association [IPMA, 1971]. He was a co-founder of the American

College of International Physicians, Inc [ACIP, 1975] and the Philippine American Heritage Association [Faha,1989]. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Indiana State

Medical Association and the Indiana Chapter of American Academy of Family Practice. He was also active with local organizations- the Optimist Club, Toastmasters Club and Respect Life Com-mittee of the American Martyrs Catholic Church. Dr. Bacala loved poetry. He served as editor of the Quill, a poetry quarterly of the Southern In-diana Poetry Club, and also of their five volumes of poetry published through the years. He edited the Indiana State’s Golden Anthology of Poetry in 1991. He was honored to receive the title of Indi-ana’s Poet Laureate for 1991 – 1993. Dr. Bacala was married to the former Presentacion Capili, who assisted him in his practice, travels and other endeavors. He had six children and eight grandchildren. His former office building now serves the citizens of southern Indiana through the Bacala Senior and Youth Center.

MESSAGE FROM THE IPMA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

August 29, 2015

To my fellow Hoosier Physicians:

It is that time again when we all gather in one place to renew our acquaintances and we tighten our bond as one Filipino-American organization in pursuit of common goals. The challenges are the same but the approach to meeting them may vary depending on circumstances. If only for this singular reason, it is very important that we put our heads together in order to promote our agenda.

The Indiana Philippine Medical Association has evolved quite significantly since our founding fathers first gathered to form our organization in 1971. From a reactionary posture in response to perceived discrimation against foreign medical graduates to subsequently almost purely a social group. Now we are more involved in not only educating ourselves by learning from our colleagues during CMEs but also in becoming more active participants in disaster relief and medical missions, networking with other Filipino-American organizations and promoting the Filipino culture to enhance the diversity that so greatly enriches our adopted country, the United States, yet not forgetting the country of our birth, our beloved Philippines. We have become the best ambassadors that both countries have as we continue to get involved in projects and activities on both sides of the Pacific.

The continued challenge of making all Filipino physicians in Indiana become active members of our organization is a perennial concern. Bringing in the second and third generation Filipinos involved is even a bigger hurdle. Our success is dependent on how vigorously we pursue our goals. It cannot lie on just the shoulders of the few officers of IPMA. It is only through the collective effort of everybody, in the spirit of a true bayanihan, that we can surmount this challenge. So we implore all of you to dig in and let us row in unison in order for us to move upstream in this raging river of apathy. Together we will be strong - INDIANA PMA STRONG!

We now have a website, www.IPMA.wildapricot.org, that we can use for disseminating information to our membership. We even have our own Facebook page: www.facebook.com/IndianaPMA. There is no reason for us to be lost in the sea of social media anymore. Let is get connected and keep our sites vibrant and entertaining as well as informative.

Mabuhay tayong lahat!

Greetings! Once again we gather tonight, not only to celebrate the future of IPMA by inducting the new officers charged to lead the organization, but we also gather to celebrate our noble profession, renew old ties, honor the past and extol the present. I am deeply humbled to be given the opportunity of being your next president. To be included among IPMA’s erstwhile distinguished leaders is truly an honor. I wish to thank outgoing president Dr. Hedy Windsor for her dedication and generous service. My sincerest thanks to all the officers for their hard work in the preparation of this event and to all my friends in the Barangay Club of Indiana, PNA, PAMET, my colleagues, coworkers, and of course my family. It is not without trepidation and pause, however, that I accept this responsibility. The IPMA is at a crossroads. Founded in 1971 and the oldest of all the Filipino organizations in Indiana, the IPMA enjoyed much prominence in the late 20th century. However, presently I worry that the heyday of the IPMA has come and gone. No longer do we enjoy a vigorous membership. We, like many organizations of Filipino ethnicity are facing a declining membership due largely to the attrition of the old guard because of retirement and migration with only sporadic infusion of new members. Indiana, after all, is not a hotbed of Filipino immigrants. With contracting membership, we also face a growing difficulty in raising funds to support our mission. I hesitate, therefore, for my dream is not modest. I wish to see another IPMA heyday - one that is not reliant on the sheer number of members, but is buoyed by the dedication of its members. To have a clear strategy is imperative, as well, lest any dedication and sacrifice may be for naught. One way we can hope to accomplish this is through collaboration with like-minded organizations. By aligning with other groups where our missions intersect, we will be able to magnify our efforts despite limited resources. We must learn to adapt and innovate. Our goal should not be to simply be content with surviving. Let us flourish and bring about a new heyday! Mabuhay ang IPMA! Leo Solito, M.D. President

MESSAGE FROM THE IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT

Blessings and Greetings to everyone. It has been a great privilege and honor to serveas President of the Indiana Philippine Medical Association for the year 2013-2014. During this short period of time we were able to accomplish great things and thank you for your support and cooperation my dear IPMA officers and members. Although I moved to West Virginia for my retirement part time no night calls pocket money hourly rate job at the end of 2014, I never left Indiana & its PMA. My heart will always be here as this state has family and friends like you who became part of my life. Thank you for Dr. Leo Solito as President-Elect and his wife Dr. Maria(Ninna) Solito as Vice President, stepped up to the plate and did a good job in preparing for this convention with the help of our Executive Director Primo Andres, and all the officers involved. On October 4-6, 2013 the 41st IPMA Convention & Inaugural Ball, my journey began

and took the responsibility as President of IPMA. We had some distinguished visitors, the Officers and members of APPA which held their Fall Meeting here in Indianapolis joining us with our celebration. We had fun, friendship and camaraderie in the midst of medical education(CME given by APPA under the Direction of APPA President Dr. Leonor Pagtakhan-So), meetings and socials. For the first time on a Friday night during the convention, the IPMA had a semi-formal Dinner/Dance as welcome night featuring the Beatles- Remix as entertainers. We were able to raise funds during the convention which we used part of it in the amount of $3,000.00 as contribution for the medications and relief goods designated for Leyte & Palawan’s Typhoon Yolanda Victims. I was there as the sole representative of IPMA who joined the UERMMMC-Medical Alumni of Southern Califor-nia chapter Medical Missions on February 2014. We served thousands of underprivileged and under served people and typhoon victims and had the opportunity to help, serve, change lives and make a difference one family, one Barangay at a time.( Please see the pictures and write up about this in this journal). Besides the mission, during my year of Presidency I humbly present to you a few remarkable accomplishments as follows:On November 2013, I was able to register IPMA, Inc. as a non-profit corporation in the State of Indiana. (Note: I looked for previous State IPMA registration and there was no record with the state). On April 2014 I was glad to be able to get an IPMA unclaimed bank account(for about 18 years) from PNC Bank which was turned over to the State’s Unclaimed Property Office. The amount of $6,911.64 check was mailed payable to IPMA 6 weeks after I submitted necessary papers to the State.I was able to initiate a 501 C-3 (tax-exempt IRS) charitable status and consulted an attorney for this, however due to costs, it was tabled and the officers agreed that the IPMA accountant would take over in stead of a lawyer. This needs to be followed up by the current administration.Lastly, on September 6, 2014 IPMA had it’s FALL Meeting with a CME and Election of 2015-2017 Officers.. Dr. Joseph Yamamoto and yours truly were the Speakers and Dr. Ronette Santos-Chua was the CME Director. This was done at the Hibachi Grill in Kokomo,Indiana. We also had a luncheon speaker from Transamerica who talked about investments. It was a fruitful educational event and in the evening we joined FAACI’s an Evening with the Stars Concert at the IUK Auditorium. It is good to see and be with you again at this 2015 Convention. Although I do not live in Indiana anymore, I will always be part of IPMA and I am just a phone call away. Please come and visit me too sometimes and as President -Elect of APPA for 2015-2016 I invite you to come to New Orleans, Louisiana where I will be inducted as APPA President in 2016-2017.

God Bless, Peace and Mabuhay!!

Medical Mission to Baguio/BenguetBy Primo Andres, MD

After a year of planning, the USTMAAA/IPMA medical mission team organized by Dr. Primo Andres and led by Drs. Francis and Delilah Tapia finally made the trek up the mountain to the Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio City

on January 21-26, 2014. Picking up missionaries from the UST campus and arguing with the security guards to let us out of the gate for not having a “permit” to go out after having been let in without one, then stopping by “Lola Talin’s Restaurant” in Project 6 to pick up the rest of our medical supplies while feasting on Ilocano delicacies, then maneuvering through the narrow streets behind Veterans Memorial Hospital and getting hustled by a policeman on a motorbike, it was no wonder that we arrived to our

destination at Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad City very late. The hospital administration, including the Provincial Governor, Hon. Nestor Fongwan, and a few of the local medical and surgical volunteers were on hand to bid the team welcome after clearing the issues on credentialing. Two heavy duty surgical suction machines

were donated to the hospital after being informed that theirs were not operational and that it could be a problem during our major surgeries.

The medical mission was done in cooperation with the St. Louis University Boys High School Class 1964 (SLUBHS64) that was celebrating its 50th Golden Anniversary, and to which Dr. Primo Andres belongs. It wanted to have an outreach program as a part of the celebration and a medical mission turned out to be a perfect fit. With the natural calamities of the earthquake in Bohol and Cebu followed by the tragedy of Yolanda, there was a significant difficulty in raising funds for the mission because of the benefactors rightly channeling most of the donations to the Visayas. But with the Fil-Am community in Terre Haute, Indiana called THINK (Terre Haute INdiana Kami) rallying behind the mission and with the help of the ACS Foundation (a family charitable foundation) and IPMA, enough fund was raised to support the endeavor.

With the Fil-Am community in Terre Haute, Indiana called THINK (Terre Haute INdiana Kami) rallying behind the mission and with the help of the ACS Foundation (a family charitable foundation), and IPMA enough fund was raised to support the endeavor

In addition to Dr. & Mrs. Andres and the Tapias, Drs. Ramon and Zenaida Contreras and Dr. and Mrs. Custodio and Cathy Lim came from Terre Haute, Dr. Dante and Mrs. Margarita Gapultos from Alabama, Dr. Felicitas Gatchalian and her sister Josephine from Missouri, Dr. Sandra Dee from Mississippi, Dr. Anselmo and Mrs. Rosario Unite from Texas, Dr. Ricardo and Mrs. Normelita Martin and Nurse Pedro Gardingan (SLUBHS64) and his wife, Gloria, from New Jersey, Drs. Roberto and Primilina Corpus from Kentucky, Dr. Ophelia Mangubat from Ohio, Drs. Antonio and Mary Lou Buendia and Zenaida Young-Bhatia from New York, Drs. Dionisio and Zita Yorro from Illinois, and Dr. Rolando Tong from New Mexico.

From Manila were Dr. Jim Sanchez, a Plastic Surgeon who did life-changing operations on harelip and cleft palate patients, Dr. Gil Simeon who brought with him his Anesthesia resident, Dr. Sandeep Neupane, from Nepal. And locally, the surgical team was headed by Dr. Pablo Candelario, an excellent Surgical Oncologist, who worked with his young and energetic surgeons, Drs. Joan Ancheta, Gerald Libatique, Debbie Sue Ligligen, Michelle Payagen, Roberto Organo, Relante Raper and Marjorie Reroma and their very efficient OR and Recovery Room and Outpatient teams. Even his wife, Dr. Vezz Candelario, a Gynecologist from St. Louis University Hospital, was also around to assist in the consultations. And their son, Dr. Nellowe Candelario, the valedictorian of UST Medicine Class 2011

who had his Observership in Terre Haute, Indiana and who is going to begin his residency in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA in July 2014, was also very helpful during the medical mission. His fiancée, Jamelle Sy and her cousin, EJ, stayed around to assist. Dr. Paz Camdas, the chair of the Outreach and Extension Services of Benguet Province and Dr. Joseph Cabinta, the Officer In Charge of Benguet General Hospital, after making sure that all credentials were in order, and with assurances and guarantees from the Governor, were very helpful in facilitating a smooth conduction of the medical mission both at the hospital and in the Capitol auditorium where the medical part of the mission was held. There were several volunteers including physicians and dentists from La Trinidad City and the SLU Girls High School Class of 1964 who provided invaluable help in taking care of the multitude of patients that came not only to receive medical and dental care but also a few light winter clothings that were shipped from the USA by balikbayan boxes, a timely gift considering the record cold weather that enveloped the region with temperatures in the single digits in Fahrenheit. We even had volunteers from Davao del Norte, Dr. Helen Anajao, Nurse Lela and Andrew Consolacion and City Engr. Mark Consuegra, who acted as the official photographer.

In a span of three days, fifty surgeries were done 28 of which were major operations including four plastic surgeries. One thousand five hundred thirteen medical patients were seen and 324 hypertensives were managed and a relatively small number of diabetics showed up

perhaps reflecting the noticeably low incidence of obesity probably because of people who are used to walking hills and mountains and eating highland products like vegetables and fish but being more liberal with salt.

We cannot be any more grateful to the reception that was given to us by the province and the people of Benguet, especially Governor Nestor Fongwan

We cannot be any more grateful to the reception that was given to us by the province and the people of Benguet, especially Governor Nestor Fongwan who made sure that we were well provided and taken cared of, visiting the mission sites 2-3 times a day to give encouragement to both patients and providers alike and a promise to extend help to those few who might need further assistance in tertiary care hospitals in Manila. The hospitality of the Provincial government and the Candelario family that hosted us at “Rose Bowl” the first night is beyond our expectations.

Having an extra day to tour Baguio was appreciated by those who had not been to the city lately. Starting at the Baguio Country Club where the missionaries stayed, and going to the Philippine Military Academy and watching the cadets dance in formation before the parade and review was a treat. Photo op at the Mansion House and Mines View Park, a pilgrimage to the Pink House of the Sisters of Charity and going up the steps of Lourdes Grotto were as much a wonderful experience.

And none of this would have been possible without the help and cooperation of the LAKAYS of SLUBHS64 and their wives under the leadership of Judge Juanito “Sabu” Orallo and Vonjeres Yuvienco providing transportation and unlimited support throughout our stay. Unsung heroes were Atty. Elizabeth Andres and her staff from Project 6 who were key in our administrative, legal and financial arrangements and last minute preparation. Now we can say with pride that our “MISSION IS ACCOMPLISHED”!Donation of two heavy duty suction machines to BeGH
