Paddock to Pantry – Delicious & Sustainable By Cheri Gibson
A passion to work together and to support both Australian products and local producers was the catalyst for local identities Carey & Steve Guihot to embark on their boutique fruit and vegetable business, Paddock to Pantry.Located in Kelly Street Scone, and now going into its fi fth year with gusto, this treasure trove of all-Australian, seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables fl anked with an array of herbs, nuts, fi sh, cereals, bread, cheese, yoghurt,
pesticide-free coffee and not to forget the delectable in-house salad bar, fresh juices, sandwiches and soup – the Guihots along with their great staff have become the purveyors of beautiful Australian food.
Carey, a physiotherapist and Steve, a former CEO place the utmost importance on energy effi ciency; reducing waste and being kind to the environment. So much so, that they implement this practise into Paddock to Pantry and the way in which it is run. Recycled timber is featured in the customer service and dining areas of the shop, and careful consideration is given to packaging
and management of any waste.
“Plans are currently in progress for the retail space to operate on a substantial proportion of solar energy generated on site – looking after our environment is very important to us.” says Carey.
It is little wonder Paddock to Pantry is going from strength to strength. Dedicated owners, great service, fabulous produce and food – a business with its feet fi rmly planted in the Upper Hunter and a vital link in Australia’s food chain.

Jumping to Great HeightsTamworth Winter Showjumping Championships
Tamworth played host to many of Australia’s best showjumpers over the weekend with the Tamworth Winter Showjumping Championships taking place at AELEC. This event has increased in popularity each year and this year was no different. For the fi rst time ever the organisers had to put on three rings over three days to cater for the ever-increasing demand for places. Most classes were full within days of the program being announced, some fi lling within a few hours.
The main ring saw some quality showjumping, with Central Coast farrier and showjumper Nic Carraro taking out the Omega Feeds sponsored Sue Alden Memorial Grand Prix. The Greg Backhouse-designed track contained a number of challenging elements which tested the 21 horses in the class. Only six riders managed a clear round in the fi rst part of the event, with Nic Carraro and Colombo the only double clear combination.
In Ring 3 many of NSW’s best young riders battled it out for supremacy, the winner taking home the Tex Cross Memorial High Point Score trophy rug. Tex Cross was a stalwart supporter of equestrian activities in Tamworth, encouraging many young riders over the years. This award came down to the fi nal class, with Jessie Rice-Ward from Dubbo running out eventual winner on Rocmysocs.
Club president Dave Alden congratulated all the competitors over the three days:
“It’s been a sensational three days of jumping and we’ve seen some of the best horses and riders currently competing in Australia.”
Alden was quick to thank the sponsors and volunteers who helped make the event a success:
“We could not have achieved such a great result without the support of the Tamworth community, our sponsors in the business community and the many volunteers who gave up their time to help run the event.”

August 4 to August 10, 2012 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - 9
Over 180 students from schools throughout the Hunter Region attended the 2012 Cows Create Careers Presentation Day at the end of last term. The day was hosted by Tocal College which was showcased very well by current students. Prior to the presentation component of the day, school students were given demonstrations by Tocal students on horse skills, beef parading skills and a tour of the dairy.
Overall winners for the Hunter Region were Tomaree High School in the Junior School section and Mount View High School in the Senior School section.
Schools participating in the program received 2 calves from a generous dairy farmer for a period of 3 weeks. Student teams were then responsible for feeding and monitoring the calves. The teams were required to submit various assessment tasks. Winning teams were announced at the fun and very interactive Presentation Day. Some of the tasks performed by students on the day included a blindfolded taste testing of different dairy products and trying to identify what they were and the fat percentage of the product, constructing a cow from Styrofoam with important parts of the rumen labelled and a quiz.
This was the 5th year the program has run in the Hunter, with 12 schools participating. The program, delivered by Dairy Australia
and DairyNSW aims to showcase to students, teachers and parents the array of career and education opportunities in the dairy industry and the importance of dairying at a local level. The project introduces members of the community, education and dairy industry sectors to support the students in carrying out the project objectives.
The Cows Create Careers project would like to thank all the farmers and the broader community for their support by being involved. Special thanks go to local sponsors who help the project: New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Tocal College and NSW
Dairy Industry Conference. It is important to mention that the project would not be possible without the commercial assistance of supplies from Probiotec and Weston Animal Nutrition.
During 2012, the Cows Create Careers project will be delivered to 180 schools in 22 dairying regions across Australia and will involve over 7,000 students.

Metal and alternate-style bands will set the stage alive at Scone’s Thoroughbred Hotel on Saturday 11 August in the second series of the Battle of the Bands. Five hours of adrenalin-pumping music will be performed by local and Newcastle-based bands – “Shove It”, “Swamp” and Cerebral Contortion” all vying for the Bangover title.
Sarah Jane, event manager for the Thoroughbred Hotel encourages the support of the local community to come along and witness superb talent.
“These bands are thrilled to be performing and we are honoured as a venue to be able to host and promote local talent.” says Sarah.
