EYEWITNESSES Today, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness ac-counts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision ac-count was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew's Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead" (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels dis-count the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own ac-count of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God con-cerning Jesus: "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased," and he assures us that the message is "altogether reliable" (2 Pe-ter 1:17, 19). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, be-came fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eu-charistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construc-tion. The city of Rome was in a terrible con-dition by that time, and a series of politi-cal upheavals, plagues, and invasions swept through. Not much of Rome's former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled peo-ple. The structures of law and admin-istration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authori-ty to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city's only glory. The Romans wanted "good order" not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increas-ingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entire-ly) was the new rule of the day. TESTIGOS Hoy, la fiesta de la Transfiguración del Señor, es día de testimonios de testigo ocular. El primero, una visión que el profeta Daniel reporta, era muy cono-cido por Jesús y sus apóstoles. Es una poderosa y memorable visión del cielo. Tiene llamaradas de fuego, ruedas en-cendidas, el sabio anciano y el Hijo del Hombre. Es claro que Daniel vio algo. Pero, ¿fue un sueño? ¿Fue algo real? ¿O fue solamente un mito astuto? ¡Pedro no quiere que su visión sea confundida de igual manera! Nos cuenta el Evangelio de san Marcos lo que él y sus amigos Santiago y Juan vieron cuan-do subieron un día a la montaña con Jesús. Jesús les ordenó a los tres testigos que no dijeran nada hasta que "el Hijo del Hombre resucitara de entre los muertos" (Marcos 9:9). Por si los lec-tores del Evangelio dan por descontada la historia o simplemente la descartan como un mito piadoso, Pedro escribe su propia versión de la Transfiguración de Jesús en su segunda carta a la Iglesia. Escribe con autoridad, como testigo ocular. Reporta este mensaje de Dios referente a Jesús: "Este es mi Hijo muy querido, al que miro con cariño", y nos asegura que el mensaje es digno de "creer(se) firmemente". Copyright (c) J. S. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Esta semana celebramos la memoria del santo patrono de los cocineros, san Lo-renzo. Este español del siglo tercero fue uno de siete diáconos del Papa Sixto II, en Roma. Su ministerio consistía en rep-artir limosnas a los pobres. En el año 257 se pronunció una nueva persecución a los cristianos en Roma y el día 6 de agosto unos soldados roma-nos asesinaron al Papa y a cuatro de sus diáconos. Lorenzo, cuyo nombre signifi-ca laureado o premiado, fue arrestado tras la batalla y llevado ante el alcalde de Roma. Este mandó traer todas las riquezas de la Iglesia, pero Lorenzo ya hacía tiempo que las había vendido para dar el dinero a los más necesitados. No obstante, se marchó de la presencia del alcalde para luego llegar con él, acompa-ñado de gente pobre y enferma, in-sistiendo que ellos eran las verdaderas riquezas de la Iglesia. El alcalde, furioso, lo mandó quemar sobre brazas para que muriera lentamente. Según testigos de su martirio, Lorenzo, a cierto punto dijo a sus asesinos: "Ya estoy asado de este lado, voltéenme para asarme por completo". Qui Nhơn mừng 400 năm loan báo Tin Mừng

Giáo phận Qui Nhơn đã khai mạc Năm thánh kỷ niệm 400 năm loan báo Tin Mừng vào ngày 26 tháng 7 vừa qua tại Chủng viện Làng Sông. Đây cũng là ngày lễ Chân phước Anrê Phú Yên, vị tử đạo đầu tiên của Giáo hội Việt Nam.

Chủng viện Làng Sông là một trong những địa điểm sinh hoạt đức tin sầm uất của lịch sử truyền giáo. Cơ sở đã hình thành và tồn tại gần 200 năm, thời gian gần đây cơ sở đã được phục hồi nguyên trạng.

Thánh lễ được cử hành do Tgm. Leopoldo Girelli, Đại diện Tòa Thánh, chủ tế, bên cạnh Đgm. Qui Nhơn Matthêô Nguyễn Văn Khôi, năm vị giám mục khác, cùng đông đảo quý linh mục, tu sĩ nam nữ, chủng sinh và giáo dân.

Trong bài giảng, Đgm. giáo phận Qui Nhơn nói đại ý như sau: Xuất phát từ nguồn cội đức tin, các vị thừa sai và bậc tiền nhân đã vun trồng hạt giống đức tin cho giáo phận. Trải qua 400 năm hạt giống sinh trưởng qua các chứng tá tử đạo, cách riêng với Chân phước Anrê Phú Yên, gương sống đặc biệt cho giáo lý viên và giới trẻ. Ngài đã nói: “Lấy tình yêu đáp lại tình yêu, đem mạng sống báo đền mạng sống.”

Trong lời chúc mừng, Tgm. Leopoldo Girelli nhắc nhớ cộng đoàn dân Chúa Qui Nhơn rằng hành trình đức tin từ Roma đến với Qui Nhơn là một cuộc lữ hành đức tin theo lệnh truyền của Chúa Kitô: Anh em hãy làm muôn dân trở thành môn đệ của Thầy, làm phép rửa cho họ nhân danh Cha, Con và Thánh Thần. Ngài nhấn mạnh rằng thế hệ hậu sinh đã lãnh nhận hồng ân nhưng không ấy, thì hãy lên đường đem ơn cứu độ đó đến hết thảy mọi người dưới sự thúc đẩy, hướng dẫn của Chúa Thánh Thần. Kết lời, ngài chúc lành cho toàn thể giáo phận Qui Nhơn.

Tiếp theo là lời chúc mừng của Tgm. Nguyễn Chí Linh, tổng giáo phận Huế. Từ những hình ảnh, sự kiện và câu chuyện trong sinh hoạt đời thường của dân Chúa giáo phận Qui Nhơn, ngài mô tả một sức mạnh truyền giáo của sự liên kết mọi thành phần tín hữu trong đại gia đình giáo phận, để từ đó lan tỏa Tin Mừng bởi những “đôi chân” miệt mài loan báo niềm vui Chúa phục sinh đến mọi người.
