EUCHARISTIC ADORATION A Personal Reflection

As I was kneeling there today in the Chapel before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, I couldn’t help think about the feeling of rest that comes over me quite frequently when I visit Him. Even if I’m distracted in my prayer, I feel at home when I’m before Him. I often find myself saying the same words as Peter as he witnessed the Transfiguration, “Lord, it is good to be here.”

All are welcome!

Below is a column I’ve read a few times this past week that spoke to me as I was pondering The Transfiguration… Now I know not everyone is a) into poetry b) into reading poetry out loud. However when he translates/gives the fuller meaning of some of those odd words for us we are given something quite accessible---you could do a lot worse with 10 minutes this August day! Night is not forever. It is a prelude to day. In the transfiguration, Jesus shook off the grime of daily night and showed apostles the daily freshness of God that dwelt deep within him. “Yes, I am God, the Ancient One,” he seemed to say in the First Reading, “the one that all heaven adores. But I am also that same loving God transformed into the roughness of your daily life. I am transfiguring here to show you the Glory within me, Glory that I will give quietly to those who will receive my Spirit—even within the smudge and smear of daily life.” Alright, how does this transfiguration of Jesus touch our own souls? I have decided to make an escape into poetry in order to answer. I am giving you a poem by the nineteenth centu-ry Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins, whom I have quoted many times in this space. [By the way, Hopkins said this poem should be read slowly, “strongly marking out the syllables.” And, just as a hint, read it out loud. Ready?] God’s Grandeur The world is charged with the grandeur of God. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil; It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod? Generations have trod, have trod, have trod; And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil; And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell; the soil Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod. And for all this, nature is never spent; There lives the dearest freshness deep down things; And though the last lights off the black West went Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs— Because the Holy Ghost over the bent World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings. What a wonderful revelation this is for us, it seems, especially in this very trying time for the world and for the Church. Here is what I think the poet is saying: Stanza 1: Everything everywhere has brilliance within its existence because of God’s undetected presence, because of the greatness of God’s humble energy. Since that is so, then why do human beings fail to reckon with (“reck”) his divine authority (“his rod”)? In other words, why do we go through daily life ignoring the very presence that so deeply grounds us? Don’t we ourselves need to be transfigured? Stanza 2: We humans detach ourselves from the beauty of the world. Our feet do not feel the soil, figuratively speaking, because we are busy “using” it to get what we want. Though we need the protection of shoes, yet, at the same time they impose a pragmatic layer between us and the earth. We have beaten the earth into submission. We live in a “bent world” now. Stanza 3: Even so, there is a “freshness” you can observe if you will. If you regard with care the leaf, the robin, the beloved hand, even your own breathing, you may just sense the fresh and living spirit that dwells within them. “There lives the dearest freshness deep down things,” is a statement of transfiguration. This is the Holy Spirit, hatching the world’s goodness into existence by settling onto it like a mother bird, preserving it with food and warmth, till it (and we) are strong enough. Come and receive that warmth, Jesus says.

Prayer for Transfiguration Sunday Radiant God, source of light, as you surrounded Jesus with your glory, so you come to us in penetrating brightness. You catch us off guard and expose our weakness. We choose the limelight while you call us to explore the shadows and brighten the darkness. We seek the spectacular while you bind up the broken in countless acts of mercy. We seek to stay on the mountain or in a comfortable pew while you walk to the valleys of need. Radiant God, fill us with light and courage to carry good news into all the corners of the world and to bring back the joy of your presence. Amen

The West Genesee School PTA/PTO District Council is once again holding a School Supply Drive for the 2017-18 school year. Last year we helped well over 150 families with school supply assistance and we are asking the parishioners of St. Joseph’s Church for their help. The list of teacher request-ed supplies seems to grow longer each year and many families have several children to provide for. Some of the supplies most needed include: binders, dividers, backpacks and back sacks as well as packages of twistable crayons. A collection bin has been placed outside the church office. Your contribution is greatly appreciated! (the school supplies will be collected on August 21st) If your family is in need of assistance please log on to: www.westgenesee.org and please fill out the request form with your child’s name, school and grade. First priority is given to students whose information we have received by Saturday, August 19. Your information is completely confidential. Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

Whole-y God Sometimes it feels like it doesn’t really matter, God, if we ignore the needs of our spouse, or shout at the kids unnecessarily, or elaborate on the truth just a little, so we look better, or waste the resources our world so generously gives; sometimes it just feels silly to worry about making things beautiful, to keep reaching for the best of the good, and not just the easy, to stay true to what is true. What difference does it really make, in the big scheme of things, if we just take the easy way, the not-bad-but-could-be-better way? And then we come here, and we remember. You do not change to accommodate our good-enoughness, our that’ll-do-ness; You do not darken the sun just a little, so we won’t feel so dull, or switch off some of the stars to keep us from feeling small. You are holy – whole-y – one and complete and God; You are Light and Life and Love and Fullness – you can be no other; You are Beauty and Goodness and Truth – brilliant and dazzling; And it is we who must change, we who come to this place to worship, It is we who must choose to gaze on your holiness & beauty, and be changed into glory. And, so here we are, God. Please, show us yourself. Amen.

Living our Faith~ July & August: Jail Ministry

Jail Ministry serves primarily to advocate for people incarcerated in the Onondaga County Justice Center. In addition to the Visitor-Advocacy Program, this ministry performs social-justice work, helps facilitate Recovery, offers a Poverty Bail Program and holds prayer meetings and Bible study with the inmates. The organization defines itself as “a grassroots, social justice, spiritually founded community collective organized to advocate on the behalf of the incarcerated; to promote peace-making and to advance the protection of human dignity within the community. Over 60 volunteers share their light and gifts on a regular basis to ensure that the Gospel imperative to visit the prisoner is lived out faithfully in our community. We are excited to welcome Keith Cieplicki, Jail Ministry Coordinator, this weekend to share with us the great works of this organization.

The One We Worship You are the pre-dawn glow that promises yet another new beginning; You are the still dusk that brings rest to a weary world; You are the prophecy of God’s life-giving Word inscribed on our hearts; You are the law that finds its fulfilment in love; You are the mountain where the presence of God blazes and burns; You are the valley where the face of God peeks out from suffering eyes; You are the glory that we long for, the whispered rumour of a different order, the Shining One who transfigures all things. You are the One we worship. Amen.

Sunday Sillies…

A little boy was waiting for his mother to come out of the grocery store. As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked, "Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?" The little boy replied, "Sure! Just go straight down this street a couple a blocks and turn to your right." The man thanked the boy kindly and said, "I'm the new pastor in town. I'd like for you to come to church on Sunday. I'll show you how to get to Heaven." The little boy replied with a chuckle. "Awww, come on... you don't even know the way to the Post Office."
