Welcome

Welcome to the 34th South Carolina Jr. Beef Round-Up. We’re looking forward to seeing all of our old friends and making some new ones this year. Round Up is a weekend full of food, fun, and fellowship - with a beef show on the side! This Handbook should answer most of your questions about the weekend events. Please read it carefully and all the way through. Your 4-H agent, FFA advisor, or breed association representative can provide additional information and assist you in registering.

Regular registration and entry fee of $20 per head are due by July 16th. Late registration and late entry fee of $40 per head will be charged July 17th – July 30th. No entries will be accepted after July 30th.

Visit the SC Jr. Beef Round-Up website or Facebook for registration, FAQ’s, sponsor information and the most up-to-date information about weekend events!

At the current time we have not secured sponsorship for our Limousin/Limflex and Zebu shows. We are working with potential donors for these shows as well as an AOB (all other registered cattle.) Breed shows are $300. If you have an interest in contributing to these or have an interest in sponsoring additional breed shows please contact us.

Some Changes for 2021: 1. We are now showing commercial crossbred heifers by weight. They will weigh in at

check in from 12 - 5 PM Friday or 8 - 9 AM Saturday. 2. Tattoos will be checked at check in for ALL registered cattle. 3. We will have an AOB (All other breeds) show this year. 4. If there is not a sponsor for a breed show, the exhibitors will show in the AOB show. 5. The Scholarship Policy has been updated. Please see rule 4 on the scholarship section

for more information.

General Rules and Information Please read all rules and regulations carefully!

1. South Carolina Jr. Beef Round-Up is open to all young people with an interest in

beef cattle and the beef industry. 2. Stall space will be provided only for those animals entered in SC Jr. Beef Round-

Up. 3. ALL Jr. Beef Round-Up breed show exhibitors must compete in the Jr.

Cattlemen’s Contest and Showmanship Contest. If you do not participate in the Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest, you are NOT eligible to participate in the Showmanship Contest or the Breed Shows. All attendees are welcome to participate in the contest as well.

4. Cattle must be in place by 9:00 am on the Saturday of the event. 5. Most exhibitors will not need to bring a grooming chute. However, if a grooming

chute is needed, they will NOT be permitted in the barns or in the Cattle Complex Sales Ring.

6. Cattle arrive throughout Friday and Saturday and we need to ensure there are spaces available for those arriving later. Please utilize only the space you need for your cattle and a SMALL spot for your equipment.

7. Please keep aisles clear and free from equipment! NO butt fans allowed, they create hazards in the aisles, and this is a safety issue!

8. Due to electrical conditions, exhibitors with electrical needs are asked to provide their own generators.

9. Designated breed representatives are in charge of their respective exhibitors and breed shows.

10. All exhibitors, families and friends are invited to attend the Sunday morning worship service.

11. The cattle barns will be bedded with a base amount of wood shavings. You may bring extra shavings for bedding your animals, if you wish. NO STRAW is allowed for bedding in the barn.

12. Designated tie-out areas are available. Please do not tie-out in wash racks or other outside areas that are not designated for such. Straw will be permitted in the tie-out spaces. Do not tie-out in undesignated areas (wash racks, other railings).

13. Please do not throw trash in the manure pits! 14. A sponsored awards banquet will be provided for all exhibitors and their families

on Saturday evening. All other meal expenses are on your own. 15. A concession stand serving drinks, snacks and meals will be available in the

Main Arena on Saturday and Sunday. You may also wish to bring a cooler with water, soft drinks, snacks and food.

16. Exhibitors and cattle are released to leave after the conclusion of their breed show on Sunday.

17. No alcoholic beverages allowed at Round-Up. 18. Neither the South Carolina Jr. Beef Round-Up Committee, Clemson University

nor T. Ed Garrison Arena will be responsible for theft, injuries or damages to persons, animals or equipment while attending this event.

South Carolina Health Requirements

★ All cattle must conform to South Carolina state health requirements. ★ South Carolina is a Brucellosis- and Tuberculosis-free state.

IN-STATE CATTLE

1. South Carolina cattle – health certificates (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) and testing - NOT required.

OUT-OF-STATE CATTLE

***Changes in Federal Traceability Rules, Please Read Carefully*** 1. All cattle must have an official state health certificate (Certificate of Veterinary

Inspection) within 30 days of the event/show and it must accompany the cattle on arrival.

a. The Official individual ID must be recorded on the CVI. b. The CVI must include a specific destination which is:

Garrison Arena, 1101 W. Queen St, Pendleton, SC 29670. 2. Brucellosis and Tuberculosis testing

a. Brucellosis and Tuberculosis testing not required for cattle from Brucellosis- free and Tuberculosis-free states.

b. Brucellosis and Tuberculosis test required for all cattle not from free states: negative test within 60 days for Tuberculosis and 30 days for Brucellosis.

3. All cattle must be individually identified with an official ear tag. a. South Carolina does not accept tattoos or brands as official ID under

the traceability rule for cattle entering South Carolina. b. Official ear tags:

• Imprinted with Official Ear Tag Shield and Official ID Number • AIN – 15 digit “840” tags (most will be EIDs – electronic)

(Manufacturer codes e.g. “982” and “USA” tags grandfathered if applied prior to 3/11/15)

• National Uniform Ear Tagging Series (NUES) e.g. 56ABC1234 • Approved devices listed on traceability website

• https://www.aphis.usda.gov/traceability/downloads/ADT_eartags_criteria.pdf

5. Out-of-State exhibitors MUST present official state health certificates (CVI) listing all of their entries to the main show office at check-in.

6. If an animal has no CURRENT CVI or APPROVED ID that animal will not be permitted to remain on the show grounds.

Scholarship Contests

The SC Junior Beef Round-Up is proud to offer numerous scholarships to our youth

who pursue a post-secondary education. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for supporting these scholarships.

General Scholarship Contest Rules

1. All youth competing for ANY scholarship MUST sign-in at the show office

PRIOR to the beginning of the ESSAY portion of the scholarship contest to be eligible for ANY scholarship.

2. Contestants need to indicate during the registration process their intent to compete for scholarships.

3. You must be an exhibitor with South Carolina’s Jr. Beef Round-Up. 4. Eligible youth may be awarded multiple scholarships and remain eligible until they

have met or exceeded $2500 in total awards. 5. At a future date, scholarship winners must pursue a 2- or 4-year degree program. 6. You must be a high school student in grades 10, 11, or 12 or a full-time college

student in the Fall of 2021. 7. You must participate in all 3 parts of the Scholarship Contest, which uses the

following scoring system: a. Written essay score – 40% b. Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest score – 40% c. Showmanship placing score – 20%

i. Showmanship points will be calculated as follows: 1st place = 50 pts, 2nd place = 49 pts, etc. until 10th place = 41 pts & all placing below 10th = 40 pts.

8. In the event of a tie, the following scores will be used in the order listed to determine the final ranking:

a. Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest score b. Written Essay score c. Showmanship placing score

9. The money will be awarded to winners when they begin their college career and will be paid directly to the institution to help cover tuition costs.

10. Winners are required to write a timely thank you letter to the scholarship sponsor. The South Carolina Jr. Beef Round-Up Coordinator must be notified when a thank you letter has been sent.

11. Monies not used by your 22nd birthday will be forfeited. 12. Relatives of Clemson University employees are not eligible for the Coca-Cola &

T. Ed Garrison Arena scholarship. 13. You MUST be present at the awards ceremony on Saturday Evening. If the

first recipient is not present, the next eligible present recipient will be awarded the scholarship.

Sales Talk Contest

Coordinators: Marie Bolt & Garrett Ulmer

The Sales Talk contest evaluates an individual’s ability to effectively present and market their animal to prospective buyers. This is done using a mock sales situation complete with a live animal and potential buyers. Contestants are judged on knowledge of their animal, ability to understand what the potential buyers are looking for, and overall effectiveness in convincing the judges to buy the animal.

Rules: 1. Decisions of the Sales Talk Coordinator are final. 2. Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Age Divisions available.

a. Junior Division - 2 to 5 minute presentation b. Intermediate Division - 5 to 10 minute presentation c. Senior Division - 5 to 10 minute presentation

3. A warning will be given when one minute is remaining in the presentation time. 4. Participants shall make their presentation to a panel of 2 judges who can ask

questions at the end of the talk. 5. You must use your calf – not a picture – during the talk. Another exhibitor must

hold your calf while the talk is being given. 6. Prohibited items include extra promotional items (farm signs, posters, etc.), and

props and incentive gifts to the judging panel (key rings, caps, etc.). 7. Presentations should include but are not limited to the following:

a. Pedigree Information b. Performance Information c. Visual Characteristics

8. You must furnish the judges with a copy of your animal’s registration certificate or the sire and dam information for a commercial crossbred animal, as deemed appropriate.

9. Contestants will be graded on 4 categories: a. Knowledge of the Animal – pedigree, performance and accuracy of

presentation. b. Presentation – originality, organization and ability to relate information

about the animal to the judges. c. Poise & Delivery – articulation, composure, response to questions,

gestures and eye contact. d. Overall Effectiveness – How convincing was the sales pitch? Were the

judges actually sold on the animal? 10. Awards will be given to Champion and Reserve Champion in each division.

Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest

Coordinator: Brian Beer & Lindsey Craig

The Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest is designed to test your knowledge of beef cattle

production and management and the beef industry. Topics for the contest may include, but are not limited to, breed identification, animal evaluation & judging, meat cuts identification, general beef cattle knowledge, beef quality issues, equipment identification, weed identification, forages identification, feedstuff identification, and safety issues.

Suggested reference and study materials include beef publications, breed magazines, AI stud catalogs, 4-H beef project books, Extension publications, breed associations materials, beef management handbooks, beef management internet web sites, and Clemson Youth Livestock Program websites.

Rules:

1. All 4-H, FFA, junior breed association members and other junior beef producers are eligible to compete.

2. All South Carolina Jr. Beef Round-Up exhibitors must compete in the Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest. If you do not participate in the Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest, you are not eligible to participate in the Showmanship Contest or the Breed Shows.

3. Novice, Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Adult Age Divisions are available. 4. You MUST register for the contest by 9:30 am Saturday morning in the Main

Arena. 5. Contestants will compete as individuals – no team activities. 6. Contestants do not have to exhibit cattle to participate. 7. The committee works hard to create a challenging and educational contest. The

format of this contest may change in order to accommodate different sections or content.

8. Awards will be provided for high scoring individuals in each division. In case of ties, final ranking will be based on high score for Section 1. If still tied, final ranking will be based on high score for Section 2, etc.

9. Clipboards are not provided, so you may bring your own. 10. Pencils will be provided.

Showmanship ContestCoordinator: Lindsey Craig

Ring assignments will be posted at the Main Arena Show Office

1. All Jr. Beef Round-Up breed show exhibitors must compete in the Jr.

Cattlemen’s Contest and Showmanship Contest. If you do not participate in the Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest, you are not eligible to participate in the Showmanship Contest or the Breed Shows.

2. This is an all-breed contest. 3. This contest is judged strictly on showmanship. Calves should be clean and dry

and may be clipped. 4. Ownership of calves will be in accordance with the respective junior breed

association requirements. 5. An exhibitor may not “borrow” another exhibitor’s calf for this contest. 6. Exhibitors must be able to control their calf. Unmanageable calves will be

excused from the show ring or not allowed to enter the show ring. 7. Any animal getting loose from the exhibitor twice will be excused from the ring

and not placed. 8. Exhibitors are to wear their South Carolina Jr. Beef Round-Up t-shirt during the

contest. 9. Exhibitors are required to wear assigned numbers during the Showmanship

Contest. 10. Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Age Divisions are available. 11. Within Age Divisions, classes will be divided by exhibitors’ year of birth, however,

the committee reserves the right to combine or subdivide classes as necessary to maintain a fair and safe ring environment. Exhibitors may be competing against older or younger competitors, but they will not compete outside of their age division.

12. 1st place class winners will come back to compete for their respective Division Champions. The 2nd place will be held in reserve and 2nd place to the Division Champion will be eligible to compete for Reserve Division Champion.

Breed Shows

10:00 am Sunday – Main Arena

General Policies ● Show order rotates each year by the last breed in each ring being the first breed to show in

each ring the next year. ● If a breed show representative determines your animal not eligible for a breed show your

heifer is still eligible to show in the commercial show.

Exhibitor General Rules 1. All South Carolina Jr. Beef Round-Up exhibitors must compete in the Jr.

Cattlemen’s Contest on Saturday. If you do not participate in the Jr. Cattlemen’s Contest, you are not eligible to participate in the Breed Shows.

2. Classes are provided only for weaned heifers and steers- NO bulls or cow/calf pairs. 3. Only youth exhibitors are permitted to show calves. If an exhibitor has more than one

entry in a class, he/she must ask another junior exhibitor to assist. This exhibitor must be registered with the JBRU Show office.

4. Exhibitors must NOT have had their 22nd birthday before January 1st of the current year.

5. Adults will not be allowed to show for junior exhibitors. 6. Unruly calves will be excused or not allowed to enter the ring. 7. Exhibitors are expected to show their calves whenever possible. They should not be a

spectator while someone else shows their calf. 8. The South Carolina Jr. Beef Round-Up Committee reserves the right to require an escort

for very small showmen, if deemed appropriate for their safety. 9. Exhibitors are required to wear exhibitor numbers during breed classes.

Show Classes

For all breeds- except Angus, Commercial/Crossbred and Steers– see specific class breakdown for these breeds. Some breeds will not offer class #4, #8, or #11 (Division Champion Classes) or #13 (Bred & Owned classes). Please read specific breed rules for class specifics.

Angus Heifer Show Breed Representative: Jody Watt

1. Exhibitors must not have had their 22nd birthday before January 1, 2021. 2. Jr. Membership- Exhibitor must be a junior, regular or life member of the American

Angus Association and a member of the South Carolina Jr. Angus Association. Annual dues are $10 for SC members and $20 for out-of-state members payable to SC Jr. Angus Assn. Mail dues to: Jody Watt; 102 Wakefield Drive; Iva, SC 29655

3. Exhibitors may show as many heifers as they wish in any division of the show. 4. Original registration certificates must be in hand and presented to the breed

representative at check-in. NO EXCEPTIONS! If you cannot provide an original registration certificate at check-in then your animal will show in the commercial show.

5. Ownership- the exhibitor’s name must be listed on the registration certificate as the sole owner- no farm names or multiple owners.

6. Bred & Owned- means the junior exhibitor must be the breeder, first owner and continuous owner of the heifer entered. Breeder- owner of record of the dam at the time of service to produce the calf. First Owner- owner of record of the dam at the time the calf was born.

3. Exhibitors may show as many heifers as they wish in this show. 4. No Division Champion Classes (i.e. no calf, junior, or senior championship class). 5. No Bred & Owned class. 6. Ownership- Any heifer not owned by the exhibitor must be accompanied by a written

statement from the owner that the exhibitor has worked with the animal for a minimum of 30 days and the owner has owned the animal for a minimum of 30 days.

7. Original registration certificates must be presented to the breed representative at check-in.

Commercial-Crossbred Heifer Show Crossbreds & all other breeds

Breed Representative: Mark Cathcart 1. Exhibitors must not have had their 22nd birthday before January 1, 2021. 2. Heifers will show by weight. The heifers will be weighed at check-in and classes will be

split and posted on Saturday. 3. This show is open to unregistered purebred, crossbred and other breed heifers,

including heifers showing Zebu influence. 4. Exhibitors may show as many heifers as they wish 5. No Division Champion Classes (i.e. no calf, junior, or senior championship class). 6. No Bred & Owned class.

Gelbvieh/Balancer Heifer Show Breed Representative: Sarah and Gary Burns

1. Exhibitors must not have had their 22nd birthday before January 1, 2021. 2. Only heifers registered with the American Gelbvieh Association are eligible for this show. 3. Jr. Membership- Exhibitor must be a member of the South Carolina Jr. Gelbvieh

Association. Annual dues are $10 payable to SCJGA. Mail dues to: Sarah Burns & Gary Burns; 227 McMurtrey Rd; Pendleton, SC 29670, or pay to Sarah at check-in.

4. Exhibitors may show as many heifers as they wish. 5. Ownership- all animals must be solely owned by the exhibitor or the exhibitor’s

immediate family or farm. 6. No Division Champion Classes- Grand and Reserve Champion will be taken from

class winners. 7. Bred & Owned- The junior exhibitor must be the breeder, the first owner and continuous

owner of the heifer entered. Breeder- owner of record of the dam at the time of service to produce the calf. First Owner- owner of record of the dam at the time the calf was born.

8. Original registration certificates must be presented to the breed representative at check-in.

Hereford Heifer Show Breed Representative: Marie Bolt

1. Exhibitors must not have had their 22nd birthday before January 1, 2021. 2. Jr. Membership- Exhibitor must be a junior, regular or life member of the American

Hereford Association and a member of the South Carolina Jr. Polled Hereford Association. Annual dues are $15 payable to SC Jr. Polled Hereford Assn. Mail dues or pay at the show: Marie Bolt, 609 Mountain View Rd. Anderson, SC 29626.

3. Exhibitors may show as many heifers as they wish in any division of the show. 4. Ownership- the junior exhibitor must be shown as the owner on the registration

certificate. 5. Bred & Owned means the SC junior exhibitor must be the breeder, the first owner

and continuous owner of the heifer entered. Breeder- owner of record of the dam at the time of service to produce the calf. Farm names alone are not acceptable as Breeder. First Owner- owner of record of the dam at the time the calf was born.

6. Only 1 calf per exhibitor may be shown in the Bred & Owned class. 7. Original registration certificates must be presented to the breed representative at

check-in. 8. Premiums- The SC Jr. Polled Hereford Association will pay class premiums thanks to

the generous donations of Hereford breeders.

Red Angus Heifer Show Breed Representative: Raymond Prescott

1. Exhibitors must not have had their 22nd birthday before January 1, 2021. 2. Jr. Membership- Exhibitor must be a member of the Junior Red Angus Association of

America (RAAA) or a state or regional Junior Red Angus Association. 3. Exhibitors may show as many heifers as they wish in any division of the show. 4. Zebu Heifer Show Breed representative: Sam Quinney

1. Exhibitors must not have had their 22nd birthday before January 1, 2020. 2. This show is open to registered purebred heifers and crossbred heifers that show at

least 50% zebu influence. 3. Heifers registered for the Zebu Show will be sifted by a committee at check-in for

predominantly zebu characteristics. Those deemed not conforming will be moved to the Commercial- Crossbred Show.
