Principal’s Page Challenging Students For students to succeed in this world they need to face challenges and get used to demands , gain confidence in presenting and across the school we aim to have many opportunities to do this. A great example this week was when students year 7-10 presented their ideas of how to improve the streetscape of Cann River to a panel in including Sueanne Claringbould from the Shire and local craftsman Gary Brownlie. Students had a great range of well planned ideas from ‘WIFI station, to Climbing Walls, and Art work. All designed to make the visitor experience to Cann River township more enjoyable and memorable. It will be great to see some of these plans become reality. Pictured : Alexis, Rhys, and Shanise presenting. Our Annual Plan for 2008 has important elements of building student ownership and building self awareness of their learning process and it was good that the Regional Forum I attended yesterday focused on this. Students to be successful in the modern world, need to have confidence and awareness of how things work. They need to learn how to manage processes and chose strategies. (That’s one reason we don’t teach ‘Woodwork’ we teach ‘Design and Technology’: where students learn to manage each step in the way things are designed and built. This is so crucial as the nature of work is changing. Also in preparation is planning for Melbourne orientation program for term four for year 7-10 . We recognise that all students need the option of shifting to urban environments and the ability to feel they can confidently function in cities is a key for them to have ‘imagined futures’. Bruce
Gardening positioning
I ‘d like to thank Tammy Stephenson for her great work in gardening In the school: there is a lot about how the garden looks that happened in her time as gardener. Thank Tammy! Unfortunately she has decided to retire. That means there is a gardening positon at the school: If you are interested come in and see me to outline what is involved

PREP-1-2 SCIENCE
Prep-1-2 Science are learning about Earth and Space Science this term. Students have been keeping a moon
diary to record its changes, recording daily temperatures and this week we have a rain gauge to check.
Unfortunately there hasn’t been anything in it yet! Matilda commented, “I was seeing how much rain there
was in the rain gauge. There was only little drops, like zero. I can check again tomorrow.” Sarah observed,
“The moon moves. Every night when I look at it, it has moved. Right now it’s really, really tiny.” Jesse
remarked, “We’ve been seeing if stars move.” All students have enjoyed making and observing their
shadows, and especially playing shadow tiggy and making shadow puppets.

Grade 5/6 Design 7 Technology
This term, the Grade 5-6 Design & Technology group are creating bird piñatas/papier mache sculptures to
enter into the Cann River & District Craft & Photography Expo 2018. Students have researched ideas and
drawn designs. They are now creating their pieces. Along the way, we are learning pitfalls, using problem
solving, and trying to improve each week.
Student comments:
-Nicole-I’m making an owl. I had to start again because my first balloon with one layer of paper deflated!
-Flynn (had a bandaged hand last week so had a slow start.) I’m making Bomb from Angry Birds.
-Hailey-Has drawn a fantastic kookaburra design.
-Jack-I’m making a tweety bird piñata.
-Chaz-I’m doing a parrot. The body is going to be papier mache and the head will be cardboard.
-David-I’m going to be making an owl piñata. It’s going to be really cute!
