Wildfire

As I write this, 56 people are confirmed dead in California with more than 100 missing. Wildfire is deadly: All indications are that we are in for a very dangerous season in Far East Gippsland. This week I attended both an Education Department Emergency Management Meeting, and a ‘Local Incident Management Plan’ (LIMP) meeting and it is very impressive the knowledge processes and understanding that the agencies have. However, it brought home to me the importance that each of us must plan. We all need to plan ahead: it is essential that every family / individual has a fire plan. It is good if it is written down with different possibilities considered. What do you do on very hot days? How do you keep in contact with what is going on throughout summer? (dangerous fires can happen even on only ‘high’ rating days.) Can you be out of this area on Code Red days? (that is what is recommended.) In December it is planned (time to be confirmed) there will be a community meeting and I would encourage everybody to attend this. We all need to hear what the professionals say.

The following document (which continues over the page) explains what happens in regard to Cann River P-12 College in regard to various levels of Fire Danger Rating. It is important to remind the school community that the school is closed on Code Red Days and on Extreme and Severe if there is a fire in a 50 kilometre radius. (The school only becomes a ‘Neighbourhood Safer Place’ when the LIMP plan is enacted, by the police, so it is not a place you can go to otherwise.) Please note the role of communications between school and parents for each situations. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Please see the following page for our school’s procedures for this bushfire season.

Yours,

Bruce Spink

Cent Night at the School

Thank-you to everyone who attended and helped out at last nights Cent Night making it run

smoothly and a fun evening. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and that you won some

amazing treasures. We raised $538.95 that will go into our camps and excursions fund.

Thank-you to the very generous monetary donation that Graham Connley made during the

evening, we greatly appreciate it.

We would also like to thank everyone who donated items to make this night so successful,

without your donations this night would not occur so THANK-YOU!

New greenery for Cann River

For immediate release — Monday, November 12, 2018

The task of planting out Cann River’s new streetscape has begun.

The East Gippsland Shire Council project has so far beautified the town’s main street with plantings in the

centre medians, roundabout, kerb extensions, and along the roadside.

The low shrubs and groundcovers used include dwarf westringia, rosemary, correa, emu bush, pigface and

callistemons. The tree selection includes flame tree, crepe myrtle, blueberry ash and lemon-scented gum.

The Cann River streetscape upgrade has been designed to significantly improve amenity and provide

additional parking, especially for recreational vehicles.

The design also addresses safety concerns for pedestrians crossing the Princes Highway as the kerb

extensions reduce the distance pedestrians need to travel to cross the street.

At the key intersections along Princes Highway, council has planted native trees at the key intersections

along Princes Highway. Natives were selected as they provide a contrast with the deciduous trees along the

highway and reflect the forest surrounding the town.

This project is being delivered by council on behalf of VicRoads as part of the broader road safety upgrades

in the Princes Highway East project.

Planting is expected to be completed in autumn 2019.

East Gippsland Shire Council has planted new vegetation at Cann River as part of the town ’s streetscape upgrade.

A District Community Plan is about communities

shaping a plan for their district – reflecting how it is

now, what are the changes, challenges and

Your experience of living in your district and

community

What is important to you
