In his famous book, Your God Is Too Small (Macmillan@1961), J.B. Phillips, an Anglican minister who lived his entire life in England, wrote to challenge some of the contemporary views of Christianity. Among them was his belief that Jesus’ ministry was not about calling people out on their sin but encouraging them to forgive and love. He writes:
“Christ very rarely called men (or women) sinners and as far as we know he never attempted deliberately to make them feel like sinners, except in the case of the entrenched self-righteous, where he used scaling denunciation (i.e. a desperate ill requiring a desperate remedy).”
His point was, ‘ if you’re looking for words Jesus used with every day folk regarding the maturation of their faith, the word ‘sin’ won’t be one of them.’ Instead he was interested in the intimate connection between the ability to forgive and the love within one’s heart.
For Phillips the key scripture might have been Luke 7:47; “her sins, which are many, are forgiven: for she loved much.” That warm spirit is the center of our faith, and I think, the hope for our world. Indeed, we live in a time when the power of love may be the only thing that can truly save us. With love,
From Our Pastor ...

Special Guest Musicians Cindy Scott & Brian Seeger August 7 - 8:30 & 10:00am services
We are excited to welcome Cindy Scott & Brian Seeger as our special music guests performing at both the 8:30 and 10:00am worship services on Sunday, August 7. New Orleans-based vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Cindy Scott & guitar guru Brian Seeger have performed together all around the world, at venues large and small from Mexico to Kazakhstan, and New York to Istanbul. Their shows depict the story-telling side of music. Although these two have prodigious skills and deep pedigrees, they care more about connection than genre or flashiness, and their repertoire shows it. Expect personal takes on American Songbook Standards, as well as lots of original compositions that draw from their New Orleans/Southern roots and Americana.
Box Tops & Labels Red Bird Mission
Just a reminder that the UMW Love Circle continues to collect the Box tops and Labels for Education which come on many products used every day. A list is located next to the collection jar under the coat rack. These labels and box tops are given to the Red Bird Mission to help them fund many of their different needs throughout the year. The Red Bird Mission has been here with their wonderful craft show in previous years as well. Crafts from the Red Bird Mission can purchased anytime by going to www.crafts.rbmission.org.

Wildlife Documentary Video Workshop If you are passionate about wildlife and have a desire to learn about wildlife filmmaking TaTanka Productions, Castle Rock, Co is putting on a Wildlife Documen-tary Video Workshop at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in OK. Bring your camera and learn how to produce your own 10 to 12 minute wildlife documentary on our nation's newly proclaimed national mammal, the Bison. The workshop will run for 5 days, July 31-August 5, 2016. The spectacular Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is a true gem of the US Fish and Wildlife Refuge System. The refuge's mixed grass prairies, lush meadows and majestic mountains with hundreds of buffalo is the backdrop for this learning experience. You will be filming during the most exciting time of the year – the bison rut (mating season), where you will observe bison behavior to the maximum. The bulls when their tails go straight up, pounding the earth with their hooves and their bellows are deafening, signaling they are primed and ready for combat to challenge the other bulls that may come their way. The winning bulls get the prize, the females. The documentary you produce will be on your observations of bison behavior. Until you have intimately observed bison behavior and the rut – it is nothing like you have ever seen before. A refuge biologist will be on hand to discuss the nuances of bison behavior. Other wildlife to be observed on the refuge are elk, deer, prairie dog, burrowing owls, eagles, vast variety of other raptors, southern song birds and possibly the endangered black-capped vireo. Tom and Sabrina Karges. owners of TaTanka Productions, a non profit 501c3, have been producing documentaries for thirty plus years specializing in Natural History and Social Awareness programs. Their work has taken them all over the world. But, their favorite place to return to is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. They have been filming at the Refuge for more than twenty five years and have produced several films for the Refuge Visitors Center. Their latest film “Wild Side of Eden” is presently being shown at the Visitors Center. You can see “WILD SIDE OF EDEN” on Youtube. The workshop is limited to 12 individuals. You will work in a small team learning how to produce your wildlife documentary program. You will learn the importance of research before you ever turn on the camera, idea script, script writing, shooting, audio and the basics of editing. Students attending the workshop should have a passion for wildlife and wildlife filmmaking. To produce a successful wildlife film takes more than just shooting hours of footage. You must be able to combine your creative story telling ability with your technical expertise in shooting and then putting it altogether in the final edit. In essence the goal of the workshop is to inspire you to develop your skills to be a successful wildlife filmmaker. The price for the seminar is $785.00 for the week. TaTanka is a 501c3 non profit so your tuition is considered a TAX DEDUCTION. At the conclusion of the five day seminar you will have your own professionally produced 10 to 12 minute documentary on bison behavior that you have shot and edited to take home.

STEPHEN MINISTRY Loneliness: a word for some, a hopeless prison for others…..
We are commanded to “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). In so doing, we are challenged to offer care to those struggling with life’s difficult moments--loss of a friend, partner, some really bad luck, financial problems, health issues or just plain old age. Isolation and loneliness often accompanies these events.
As Christians, we know there is inner strength to be found in our own spirituality. We are told God knew Adam needed a life partner (Genesis 2:18). But other humans are often not enough and we must reach both above and outside ourselves.
We have been offered eternal life through the Son of the Father and that is good news. The problem is that this comes later. So, back to square one: what to do now to slog through the pain and misery?
Prayer is the best medicine, but results may not always come, and never quickly enough. Thus, until or unless God acts, it is incumbent on us to push past our veil of misery finding new things to raise us up. A pet? Volunteer service? A new diversion like a hobby? A physical fitness program? Bible study? Other church activities?
After Michael Roberts’ June sermon, I watched Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love” starring Julia Roberts. Her lessons learned are instructive for all. Be Curious. Be thankful for fear. Don’t look so hard for certainty. Be patient with yourself. Stop wanting guarantees. Know the difference between quitting and surrendering. Be a creator, not a bystander. Find your tribe. Keep showing up.
And remember that He will be with us until the end of time (Matthew 28:20).
