New X60 bus route: Aylesbury – Winslow – Buckingham – Milton Keynes

2nd November 2014 Buckinghamshire Transport are working with Arriva to upgrade Route 60 from the current hourly service to a two bus per hour frequency. Key points of the new timetable are: -Two buses per hour on Mondays to Fridays with most journeys taking a faster “X60” route following the A413 and giving improved punctuality. -One bus per hour continues to Milton Keynes replacing the current Route 32 giving a regular direct service from Winslow to MK for the first time and a second bus per hour between Aylesbury and Milton Keynes. -Services to Oving, Granborough, North Marston & Maids Moreton are retained on a two hourly basis, including buses at peak times. -Hourly “fast” journeys on Saturday plus 2 hourly buses via the villages. -Electronic Real Time information displays will be installed at stops in Winslow and Buckingham. -We are working with Northants County Council to provide a late evening journey from Milton Keynes to Buckingham. -Later last buses from Aylesbury and Buckingham.

-No change to Sunday & Bank Holiday timetable.

Start date for the new service is 2nd November 2014.

Thames Valley Police warning over courier scam Incidents of ‘Courier Fraud’ continue to be reported across Aylesbury Vale and Thames Valley Police would like to remind residents to be on their guard against this type of scam.

The scam is as follows:-

The victim receives an unsolicited telephone call from the fraudsters claiming to be their bank (or in some cases the police), stating that their systems have spotted a fraudulent payment on their card or that their card is due to expire and needs to be replaced.

The person may be asked to ring back using the phone number printed on the back of their bank card. This helps to convince the person that the call is genuine. However, the fraudster has kept the telephone line open so even though the person has called the bank, the call does not go through. Instead they are unknowingly connected straight back to the fraudster.

The fraudster gains the person’s trust by pretending to offer assistance. In many cases the person is asked to provide their full bank card details and key in their PIN so that the existing card can be cancelled and their new one activated or authorised. The fraudster will then explain that the bank will need to collect the card.

The fraudster will then attend the person’s address or send an innocent courier company driver to collect the card and sometimes provide them with a replacement card which is subsequently found to be fake.

Therefore, the fraudster has obtained the person’s name, address, full bank details, their card(s) and the PIN(s). The bank cards are then used fraudulently.

Police advice is that if you receive such a call, end it immediately. Thornborough / Coombes Community Wood Bucks County Council and Thornborough Parish Council have asked us to publicise the following:

Last week, two large horses were seen riding at speed up the long straight ride which runs all the way up the Adstock Road, immediately inside the road hedge, from the T junction at the Coombs. It must have been a lovely gallop, although fairly dangerous given that people and dogs can literally just nip out at any point, but various local concerns were raised. Male and female riders, who were obviously together, when challenged, said that it was fine as “the PC” had said so. Because of issues with ground conditions and other users of the site, BCC has

always prohibited any horse access to all of the Community Woodland. There is a general local belief that as the whole area is “public”, including Coombs farm which is tenanted and off limits, anything goes as ‘ it’s people’s right’. Whenever BCC can, it has challenged this, i.e. it’s not ok to nick hay, wood, gates, fence materials etc; nor is it ok to empty your dog at will, but the issue pervades. Notices will be put up and if any villager knows who the horse riders are / were please could you let any Parish Councillor or the Clerk know.

Finally, hay making will commence in several of the grassy spaces within the woodland soon. It is the best way of getting rid of the grass whilst limiting negative impacts. Users should be aware there may be large machinery about, it’s done for all the right reasons, and BCC will be coming down hard on folks who persist in letting dogs foul onto the crop. Advance Warning - Adstock Junction Drainage In response to numerous repeated requests from the Parish Council, Bucks County Council will be carrying out improvement work at the Adstock junction in the next 8 weeks (A413 entrance to village).

The works will involve digging out the pond in the centre of the junction and the ditch on the other side. The existing pipework will be jetted and repairs to the footway and kerbs as well as installation of hazard marker posts around the junction island. The culvert under the A413 will also be cleared out during our works. This work needs to be carried out by a separate gang due to working in confined spaces. In carrying out these works, there should be an improvement to the drainage during the winter months.' Adstock on the Web Check out www.adstockvillage.info The site has been developed by the Parish Council and is to be used as a tool to assist in communication within our village. This is very much in its early days. We are looking for volunteers to help populate and further develop this site. If you have ideas / comments / suggestions or would like to be involved with site admin etc, please do contact us via [email protected] Next Meeting - will be on Tuesday 9th September 2014, 8pm in the Village Hall (no meeting in August) Lynn Ettaoussi, Parish Clerk, Telephone (01296) 714721

SPONSORED RIDE & STRIDE

SATURDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2014

Many thanks to those of you who have already volunteered to participate. But there is still plenty of time for more of you to join in. Half of the monies raised will benefit the Bucks Historic Churches Trust (who give the money back by way of grants to churches like ours in need of repair) and the other half will go directly to St. Cecilia's.

A mixed group of riders of all ages intend to cycle around the 4 churches in our benefice – Adstock, Padbury, Gawcott and Hillesden. And Danny Tomblin has kindly offered to take with him a puncture kit etc. in case of 'breakdown' so no-one need be put off on that score.

However, that ride may be too far for some of you or you may be a non-cyclist, so here are some alternatives to think about: 1.We have a lot of dog walkers in Adstock. Why not get sponsored for taking the dog out that day? 2. We need volunteers to man the church on September 13 and you could be sponsored for doing that. 3.How about a buggy push around the village? 4.And if, like me, you are away on holiday that day how about taking an extra walk and getting sponsored for that? I shall be walking around the top deck of a cruise ship somewhere in the Baltic and hoping the weather is not too inclement!!

I will be receiving sponsor forms later this month and will get them out to all participants as soon as they arrive. So please let me know if you would like to join in. It will be a fun day wherever you are and every penny will make a big difference

ADSTOCK BOOK CLUB

The President's Hat by Antoine Laurain

Continuing our French theme, this month's book was 'The President's Hat' by Antoine Laurain. Dining alone in an elegant Parisian brasserie, accountant Daniel Mercier can hardly believe his eyes when President Francois Mitterrand sits down to eat at the table next to him. Daniel's thrill at being in such close proximity to the most powerful man in the land persists even after the presidential party has gone, which is when he discovers that Mitterrand’s black felt hat has been left behind. After a few moments soul-searching, Daniel decides to keep the hat as a souvenir of an extraordinary evening. It is a perfect fit and as he leaves the restaurant Daniel begins to feel somehow...different! This book is not just about the life of Daniel Mercier but is, in fact, more a collection of short stories deftly woven together by a magical felt hat. It is also a well-documented journey through Paris during the 1980's, a time of political uncertainty and one filled with allure and decadence. Antoine Lourain has created a very special, mystical and entertaining story that reveals truths about human nature - love, families, relationships, careers. The hat has a hand in the destiny of so many facets of people’s lives in the story. A charming book, easy to read, with a good twist at the end! Hilary Kenny

THE ADSTOCK SCIENCE CLUB In my day job, for those of you who don’t know, I fix PCs, get rid of pesky viruses and do anything else that may need sorting out with sick computers. While I’m doing all this I sometimes get asked questions relating to some of the problems I am solving; for instance, when a computer won’t “Boot up”, why is it called booting up and not starting up? Related to this is when the Operating System or OS needs to be re-installed, what is an Operating System?

Well at our last Science Club meeting we had a nice chap, Andrew Smith, over from the Open University Faculty of Mathematics (which also includes Computing and Technology). He gave us a very interesting, and crucially a non-technical talk, about a particular type of Operating System called Linux.

But before I go into more detail about Linux, I should firstly give you some answers to the above questions. Let’s take the 2nd question first, what is an Operating System? An Operating System is a program running on the computer that is in charge of just about everything the computer does. For instance when you type something on your keyboard or click a mouse button the OS is what causes that character to be displayed or that click to activate a button on your screen. The OS manages all computer activity and without it nothing would happen. Of course the OS does a lot more but you get the picture. One OS most people have heard of and use is Windows you may also have heard of OSX which is the OS for Apple computers.

So why do we say Booting Up instead of starting up? This term comes from an old expression “to pull oneself up by ones boot laces or boot straps”. Because the OS such as Windows or OSX is huge, it has to be loaded up in stages and this is done by a smaller “Boot” or “Boot strap” program which has the job of pulling the full OS off the hard drive and loading it into the computer’s solid state memory called RAM (Random Access Memory) in an orderly fashion.

Andrew began his talk on Linux by drawing our attention to just how many devices use Linux in one form or another. He explained that there are currently over 800 different versions of Linux out there, from powering mobile phones to web servers and even specialist versions used by some for hacking into other systems. Linux, which has its roots in an older OS, UNIX, was created by Linus Torvalds from Finland when he was about 22. He developed Linux so that he could complete his PhD. He released Linux to the world for free, as an “Open Source” program allowing everybody free access to download and use as they pleased. Linux is also being used in many hidden systems such as process and control systems for lifts and other devices.

One of the most popular versions of Linux is UBUNTU which was created in Africa, the name means “Humanity to others”.

Lastly Andrew asked if any of us could think of a super computer running Windows or OSX. Err, no we couldn’t. However Google started by creating just such a beast, Beowulf, from a rack full of old PCs running a version of Linux. Why, you wonder, if Linux is so good and out there in vast numbers, why aren’t we all using it? I often wonder this myself. All I can think of is that Microsoft and Apple have great sales and marketing departments! Marius Stuart 01296 712 561 [email protected]

News from Padbury C of E School

Another busy term at Padbury School is drawing to a close but what a lot we’ve packed in! We held a very successful ground’s day in May and managed to tick off all the jobs on the list! Thanks to all those parents and children who came along to help in the hot sunshine. The children have also hosted a fathers’ day breakfast where they served bacon butties and sang a few songs in appreciation of their dads. It was fantastic that so many dads were able to join us.

Our Key Stage 2 children (aged 8-10 years) have begun swimming lessons at The Swan Pool, which they are greatly enjoying. Meanwhile Oak Class (aged 7 years) had a brilliant day out on the Hartwell Estate pretending to be shipwrecked on a desert island. They enjoyed it so much that they didn’t want to be rescued and return home! Our youngest children (aged 4-6 years) have been learning about transport and had a day trip to Quainton Railway Museum which included a steam train ride! Later this month some children will be representing the school at the Roald Dahl parade in Aylesbury following our practical workshop by one of the parade’s ‘artists in residence’.

Many thanks should go to the PFA who co-ordinated a ‘Strictly come bidding’ event which raised an astonishing £3,050.50 by auctioning lots such a Top Gear tickets, fresh eggs, boating days out and gardening to name just a few. What a wonderful result! Can I say thank you to those of you who supported this event on behalf of the children at the school? We hope to put our next PFA contribution towards developing a quiet ‘reflection’ area in the school grounds for the children.

We will be hosting a holiday club at the school during the summer holidays for children ages between 4 and 11 years old. If you would like information about this event then please e-mail the Office on: [email protected]

We look forward to another busy term when we return in September after a restful summer.
