Open Day

We're opening up our gardens, the Church roof needs repair, Five ladies and the vicar are the only ones who care.

Mabel's making treacle tarts and Lottie's baked some buns, Teas served in the churchyard for anyone who comes.

The vicar has put some signs up and arrows point the way. Fingers crossed the sun will shine to bless our open day.

I hope the greenfly disappear and slugs have been a pain, But Dorothy's prize bloomers have lit up Lovers Lane.

Farmer Green has let us down muck spreading on the land,

We've brought some aerosols from Boots and keeping them to hand. Gertie's in a dither, the bees have swarmed today

They are in a rather awkward place, where the visitors will pay.

There's a lucky dip for children and a plant stall by the gates, The Morris Dancers let us down so the vicar's bought some tapes.

He couldn't quite remember what collection he'd procured, It sounded like Beethoven's 1812 overture.

The cannon scared the donkey, it took off like Red Rum,

And Farmer Green's wife Ethel, was knocked down in the scrum. She's a rather hefty lady and I'm very sad to say,

She did for the jams and jellies we'd made to sell that day. That excited all the passing wasps, each one to Ethel clung,

But the hospital just phoned to say, she's not too badly stung.

The fire brigade's been called as a man's wedged in the tower.

Mabel's feeling faint again, she's not good on her feet, And carting round those tea urns is not right in this heat.

Composed by the late Eileen Humphrey who lived in East Street.

A Polite Request We have heard from several villagers requesting that people do not park cars across pavements, as this forces mums with pushchairs and toddlers to walk in the road. It seems particularly bad along West Street. Thank you

____________________ Adstock Church Restoration Appeal Below you will see a couple of articles on the different events that have been held in the Village over the last few months in this addition of the Clarion, so I will not duplicate them, but I feel it is important that you get an overall picture of how the fund raising is going. We have reached the incredible figure of £9717 without taking into account tax relief and promises. If we take those into account we are at just over £11000. An amazing figure in a very short space of time. This means that with the money we already had in the bank our overall total is close to £22,000!! Only £28,000 to go !!!!!!!!!! Thank you to everyone who has donated both directly and by supporting the events. Do not worry if you have still to donate there is plenty of time and we hope everyone in the Village will support the Village Fete on Sunday 27 July. A

you to you both. If you would like to help or donate please get in touch by email to [email protected] Neil Fraser-Smith

Easter Egg Hunt Thanks to all those who attended the Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday 20th April. The weather was much better than forecasted and the turnout was amazing. Over 50 Easter eggs were given out after hunting for the cards hidden outside the church and in the gardens of the Rectory. Thanks Paul and Helen. The village hall was also put to great use serving tea, coffee, and a great selection of cakes! Well done to Danny and the committee for organising a great hunt which raised £330 for the Adstock Village Church Restoration Appeal. Race Night We somehow managed to squeeze 116 people into the Old Thatched Inn for what was a great night of entertainment in the pub. There were 6 races. The tote sellers were busy selling bets for their horse numbers and after each race there was always a good queue at the pay-out table! We must really thank Andy Judge for allowing us to rearrange the whole pub moving furniture to accommodate the numbers plus installing a TV and big screen. He also provided an excellent meal followed by desserts and cheese and biscuits. We would also like to thank all the race sponsors, horse owners & Jockeys for their support. Congratulations to Linda who won the big £150 prize on the last race. The evening raised a massive £2847 for the Adstock Village Church Restoration appeal.

SPONSORED RIDE & STRIDE

SATURDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2014

CYCLE, RIDE OR WALK AROUND BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

(AND, IF YOU ARE FEELING VERY ENERGETIC, ADJACENT COUNTIES)

TO RAISE MONEY FOR ST. CECILIA'S CHURCH

And for the

Buckinghamshire Historic Churches Trust (BHCT)

The Historic Churches Sponsored Cycle Ride, also known as 'Ride and Stride', is open to walkers as well as horse-riders and cyclists - in fact to anyone using a non-motor powered form of transport. It always takes place on the second Saturday of September between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. BHCT will use half your donation to give grants to churches and chapels in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes towards the cost of fabric repairs. The other half of the money you raise will go directly to St. Cecilia's. An application for funding has already been submitted for help with the roof repairs at St. Cecilia's.

Participants are given lists of churches taking part, which is the vast majority of those in the county, and go from one to another (as many or as few as you choose) either singly or in groups, having planned their own routes. Many churches are open with someone on duty; otherwise a form will be left on the door for arrivals to enter their details.

This year you can donate via Just Giving which is simple, fast and totally secure and the most efficient way to get yourself sponsored. BHCT will receive the money faster and if your sponsors are UK tax payers then Gift Aid can be added to their gift if they wish to do so.

So to all you fit and healthy Adstock residents out there let(in a manner of speaking!!!!) for our beautiful village church.

ADSTOCK BOOK CLUB

by David Bret

Bret. Maurice Chevalier was born on the 12th September 1888 and died on the 1st January 1972 Although not a particularly well written book, it gave a detailed insight into life. He started in the French - quite an eye opener! Amazing how saucy they were, full of eccentric entertainers, passionate love affairs, all sorts of goings on! Chevalier was often plagued by periods of self-doubt and could be difficult but could be caring and generous and always gave his best to his public. He had a passionate on/off relationship with entertainer Mistingeutt for many years. He had many affairs plus a marriage but they always came back to one another. He fought and was captured by the Germans during the First World War. Yet during the Second World Way there were charges of collaboration. Chevalier certainly had an interesting and full life. There is no doubt he was a talented entertainer and appeared in many films Sue Grensted

THE ADSTOCK SCIENCE CLUB I start off with a cautionary tale, for all those out there who use USB memory sticks as their main method of saving and backing up their data, I have personally had experience of losing stuff I had taken the trouble to save on one of these devices. However, and more to the point, so have a couple of our members who spent time investigating, writing up and saving their presentations which they were intending to give, and in one case in about 2 hours, when without so much as a wave goodbye, their hard grafted PowerPoint presentations vanished from view. Mark who had the first of these unpleasant surprises had just two hours to try and regain some semblance of his talk which was, by the way, on computer and video games. The second victim was luckier, John Foggitt lost most of his presentation, the Science of Sound, but as luck would have it, a few days before having to give it. He was therefore able to reproduce most of his work without a mad panic.

devices without taking extra precautions, it will ultimately fail you and probably at the worst possible moment. Anyway, following these minor disasters some of us participated in our annual science quiz night at Sue Grenste We had great fun, this ers comprised of Sue, my wife, Jennifer and John Foggitt. I do suspect however that most, if not all the answers came from one particular individual

be mentioning his name. During the past few weeks we have also been to a number of interesting talks at Buckingham University. The first one covered the probability that life began on another planet and was conveyed over to the Earth via a comet. The second was strictly speaking not science, Data Security - more technology but gave those who attended something to think about. Marius Stuart 01296 712 561 [email protected]

News from Padbury C of E School As we begin a new term with a new initiative for the school, our first residential trip for Sycamore Class to Shortenills Environmental Centre, it gives us an opportunity to reflect on the last term during which we completed two building projects; a quiet area and a performance area. The latter was funded by a National Lottery grant for which we are very grateful. Mr Bercow MP will be officially opening our performance area later this term. The quiet area has already been well used and the children are enjoying making up their own stage productions.

As mentioned in the last Pump, the school recently had its SIAMS inspection and are delighted to report that we received an outstanding grade. The Inspector wrote:

Padbury Pre-school

Padbury Pre-school has had a busy time since our last article. The children and staff have been venturing into space by making rockets and planets and learning about our galaxy. They have learnt about spring with all planting seeds, fingers crossed they all grow!

The children have been busy celebrating a wide range of religious events from St. Patricks Day to Mothers Day. The children shared pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and finished the term with an Easter egg hunt which was organised by the PFA.

We would like to welcome all new children that have joined Padbury Pre-school for the summer term and hope they soon settle in, make friends and enjoy all the activities the staff have planned.

Padbury Pre-school have been very lucky to receive a grant from Bucks County Council to help to develop their outdoor area so continous outdoor learning can be provided whatever the weather. The outdoor area is currently being re-developed and we look forward to sharing it with you in the near future.

Everyone at Padbury Pre-school would like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to Mr John Hannon who is our current Treasurer. Due to increased work commitments John is stepping down from his role from September 2014. This means we are now looking for a treasurer to join the team. John is happy to discuss the role with anyone who may be interested and for the new treasurer to shadow him to ensure there is a smooth handover of roles. If you are interested in the role of treasurer please email [email protected] for more details.

Padbury Pre-school is now taking registrations for September 2014. If you would like to register your child for Padbury Pre-school please contact Mrs Claire McHenry on 01280 816495 or by email [email protected] .
