Worship Schedule

At the Church Council meeting on Monday, July 16, the following people’s names were presented and approved as the new Search Committee for the position of Associate Pastor at Church of Apostles: Andy Appel (chair), Mic Bender, Allison Carr, Christa Conrad, John Hess, Jean Heidig, Linda Lewis, Alexa Neiderer, Mark Reinhardt, and Karen Youtz. The first meeting was held on Tuesday with Penn Central Conference Minister Rev. Dr. Monica Dawkins-Smith explaining the search process to the group. The first step in the search process is to write the church profile, explaining every facet of our church to prospective candidates. Once this is completed, our church profile is sent to the Conference, where candidates looking for positions read the profiles that are on file. If a candidate feels that a particular church may be a good fit for them, they will ask the Conference to send their profile to the church. The Search Committee will look through all of the pastor profiles as they come in, narrowing their choices to a group that they want to interview via Skype. From this group, several candidates are invited to in-person interviews, followed by Search Committee visits to hear them preach at a neutral pulpit. The final decision is made by the Committee, after which the candidate is invited to our church for a weekend of meetings with the congregation, followed by a trial sermon and a congregational vote.

The Committee will keep the congregation informed as every step of this process is completed to ensure that everyone knows what is going on. There will be a chart posted in the Narthex with the above-listed tasks for the Search Committee to check off as they progress. If anyone in the congregation has any questions about the search process, please do not hesitate to contact any of the members of the Committee. While we cannot discuss any candidates for confidentiality reasons, we can certainly explain the process and where we are in the search. Please pray for the group for God’s guidance in discerning the direction of our church in the future. Thank you. Sincerely,

Linda Lewis Linda Lewis Council President

Each Commission is invited to make a 15-minute presentation on how they make use of their budgets. He will be making use of a report prepared by Stewardship about the giving patterns within the church. It was suggested that information about electronic giving, and the methods by which people enroll, be included. Pastor Kathy’s Report: As in packet. of expanding the loving capacity within COA. (4) Congregational Meeting, Sunday June 24. George Alspach, as Parliamentarian, was asked to review the Council’s motion to see that it met the need. His recommendations for the wording of the ballot question included information from the Stewardship Commission regarding the cost of the action, and their projections of which investment funds might be used to support the position. A specific investment is listed because it requires a Congregational vote to release funds. Discussion followed, and adjustments made to language. The final language of the motion will appear as the ballot. All three points on the ballot are approved/denied by yes/no vote.

“Fact Sheet and Ballot on Approval and Funding of Associate Pastor Position” The current contract for Associate Pastor was authorized by the Congregation in 2015 and ends in October, 2018. The current associate pastor has resigned the position and further action to continue the position is proposed. The following actions were approved by Church Council for the Congregation’s consideration and approval. Please indicate your vote in the space provided below.

That the congregation of Church of Apostles approves entering into a time of search for an associate pastor for employment after October, 2018.

That in accordance with the search process, the church budget for the hiring of an associate pastor to provide salary and expenses for said associate pastor position not to exceed $75,000. per year.

That the Stewardship Commission and Church Council are charged with proposing, and authorized to implement, further changes within future budgets including the use of Investment funds (such as the Homestead Village Land Transfer Fund) in order to provide the funding as may be necessary for the associate pastor position. Sunday School Our summer theme is Creation, as we study the stories of the Old Testament. Again, this summer will include Sunday School in the Park; upcoming dates are July 29 and September 2.

Wishing Well We are very excited to soon introduce the Apostles Caring Cart! This transition from the Wishing Well to the Apostles Caring Cart will happen in August! Watch for it in the corner of the Narthex next to the Outreach bulletin board. Donations will be collected in the cart rather than the Well.

For the rest of the summer, we will continue to collect home care and personal care items for the Apostles Assistance Fund. Rev. Kathryn Kuhn and Rev. Heather Giffen receive many requests for home and personal care supplies, so we need to fill these needs through the

Apostles Assistance Fund. Items needed are posted on sticky notes on two posters (one in the cloak room and one on the Outreach bulletin board). Thank you all so much for supporting all of our outreach ministries. It is our way of sharing God's love with all people!

Book Club The COA Book Club meets every second Tuesday of the month at 2:00 pm in the Parlor. Please join us on Tuesday, August 14 to discuss the book The Duchess by Danielle Steele (a DVD will be shown). Upcoming books will include: September 11: An American Family by Khizr Kahn October 9: The Supreme Macaroni Company by Adriana Trigiani

We are happy to have new people join us (even if you haven’t read the book)! If you have any questions, please contact Clara Kosmela at (717) 569-9960. Parish Life Update UCC Annual Meeting: A motion to not use styrofoam in

church was passed. COA will use up our current styrofoam supplies and then purchase new paper ones.

Hospitality Table: Volunteers are needed to host the hospitality table on Sundays. If we do not have hosts, we will not be able to have refreshments or snacks during fellowship time between services. Please contact Erika Neiderer at (717) 413-7246 to volunteer.

Parish Life is working on a notebook of instructions for operating the stove, urns, and coffee pots. It will also include staff phone numbers to use if a problem occurs in the kitchen.

The heater/air conditioning unit has been installed in the kitchen.

We are looking into moving the hot coffee and water urns to a different location in the Narthex during fellowship time.

We are still looking for someone to unclutter the kitchen and refrigerators for two hours a month at $10 per hour. Please contact Clara Kosmela at (717) 468-3492 if you or someone you know is interested.

Cooking Club The COA Cooking Club will meet again on Monday, September 24 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Youth Center. Flo Waldron will

facilitate this session. If you want to join us, or have any questions, please contact Donna Carr at (717) 475-5285. An attendance count is very important for planning ingredients and amounts of food.

COA/Transitional Living Center Picnic Church of the Apostles has a long-standing relationship with the Transitional Living Center (TLC), a 52 room short-term housing facility located in downtown Lancaster City that assists persons and families to transition from homelessness to permanent housing. COA is proud to support this vital ministry! We are excited to announce that COA will be hosting the residents of TLC on Sunday, August 12 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm for a picnic at Rader Park! We are inviting all COA members and their families to come enjoy food, fellowship, and activities for all ages. As supporters of TLC, we feel that it is important for our congregation to meet some of the people our contributions have helped and that we host TLC’s residents in a way that shows the heart of our church – to “share Christ’s love with all people.” As a congregation, we can all help make this a memorable experience for TLC. How can you help? We need two "grill masters" to cook hot dogs and

burgers We need donations of "covered dishes" to go with the

dogs and burgers, even if the donor(s) can't attend We need enough food donations to feed as many as

100 people in total We need people to help set up as well as clean up Most importantly, we need you! We need our church family to attend and to fellowship with our guests, play games with them, and make them feel at home. Thank you, in advance, for participating in this exciting event. Together, we can continue to positively affect the lives of those at TLC! If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact Andy Appel at (717) 490-0093. Please sign up at the Rader Park bulletin board in the church lobby. Comfortable Kitchen We now have a kitchen that will be warm in the winter and cool in the summer! Some of the profit from the
