Occasional sewers sometimes experience problems if they haven’t used their machine in a while...Usually the machine is fine, it’s just a matter of proper threading. I find that a quick refresher in the correct way to thread a machine goes a long way. It’s like anything else in life, use it or lose it.

Remember the basics: 1) Always thread and un-thread with the presser foot up. This will open up the tension disks and allow the thread to seat fully. 2) Always use two hands while threading. By this I mean that you should unspool anywere between 18 and 24 inches of thread (depending on the machine). Hold the thread from coming off the spool pin with your right hand, then with some tension on the thread let it slide in your left hand while going through all of the guides on the machine. When you get to the last guide before the needle, lower the presser foot. You should now feel tension on the thread. Thread the eye of the needle using the automatic threader, or the old fashion “one eye” technique. 3) Make sure the bobbin is getting into its tensioner by stalling the bobbin from turning with your finger while threading it into the bobbin case. If it’s rotating in the bobbin case properly, you’re using the correct bobbin for the machine, and its getting into the tension spring, it will work properly.

This being said, if you feel that you need a refresher, come on in and we can show you. There are a couple of options we can provide. If your machine is current in the Bernina or Baby Lock line, you don’t need to bring yours, we can use a floor model to show you. If you have another brand or an older machine just bring it in. Thread ups are free and guide classes are included free with the purchase of any machine. Another option would be to schedule a one-on-one appointment. It will only cost 24.95 for 30 minutes of instruction on any make or model. Give us a call and we can schedule something.
