2014 was one of the most significant years in the Club’s history. Reducing our debt, replacing aircraft with newer models, starting the C152 refurbish-

ment program and a very successful CASA audit were some of the many highlights of the year. Coming to terms with the new CASA regulations introduced in September was also a major achievement for the flying department.2015 already promises to be a year of growth with the Club taking on the training of the ECU aviation program. This will result in increased utilisation of our aircraft which is an essential requirement if the Club is to record a surplus. The closing of a flying school at Jandakot will undoubtedly also improve our flying hours and bring new members to the Club. The hangar is experiencing significant demand from owners of Cessna aircraft for the SIDs program to be carried out on their aircraft. Increased retail activity in the hangar will help our bottom line. We will shortly be completing the SID on VH-KTV and VH-BOF before selling these well maintained workhorses. Our fleet will see a long overdue upgrade. The C172 fleet will soon be exclusively R and S models, significantly increasing the commonality of systems. The recently purchased VH-IXE is having a Garmin 430W installed so the Club can offer GPS approach training. Converting to the 430W at this stage will ensure that VH-IXE will meet the requirement for all instrument flying aircraft to have ADSB capability by 2016. The C152 fleet refurbishment has been delayed by the rush of SIDs for retail customers. VH-UWC is the next C152 earmarked for refurbishment. We are currently considering installing a basic glass cockpit into a C152 to see if this meets member demands. The introduction of a cross-hired Decathlon early next year will greatly assist our ability to deliver tailwheel training and advanced aerobatics. The Club has always been at the forefront of training standards. We were the first to introduce the now mandatory competency based training methodology. All aviation training organisations have a three year window to convert to the newly introduced Part 141 and 142 training school regulations. We are well advanced on this route and hope to be one of the first schools in Australia to be approved under these regulations. The sheer volume of work cannot be underestimated, and Chief Pilot Trevor Jones and his team still have considerable work to complete. Unfortunately this work does not bring in revenue, but is a necessary investment if the Club is to offer integrated training.

From the GM's Desk

President Andrew Eldridge has been working on introducing a Racwa Young Eagles program in early 2015. The itinerary includes visits to exciting aviation organisations and promises to be an enriching experience. The Club’s Charter requires us to foster an interest in aviation for the general public and this program will certainly do just that. Read Andrew’s article elsewhere in this edition.Committee members Rachel George and Linda Maule have been investigating the opportunity of the Club offering a member benefits program for our members. It is hoped that this will be introduced in 2015. In the meantime, new professional looking membership cards will be issued to members in early 2015. The sooner members renew their membership, the sooner we can start having the cards printed. The achievements of 2014 would not have been possible without a considerable amount of work. Many of our employees have put in an unprecedented amount of effort to ensure our continued growth. Please note – I am referring to our GROWTH, no longer am I talking about our SURVIVAL. The days when we walked a financial tightrope are now past. We still have to eliminate our remaining debt and continue working towards reducing our overheads, but the year ahead promises to be one of growth and improved prosperity. As we start a new year, we look at setting goals for the year. We have plenty to offer you - an aerobatic endorsement, the increasingly popular Formation Friday excursion, a tailwheel endorsement, glass cockpit training, or simply improving your flying skills. We are here to help you.I would like to thank all employees (and their partners for allowing them to put in so much additional work) and the special members who tirelessly commit their personal time to helping our Club. Lastly, I would like thank our members who support the Club by utilising our resources; your continued patronage has enabled us to shrug off the legacy of the past and return to profitability. On behalf of the President, Committee and employees of the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia, I wish all members and their families a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

2015

The 2014 West Australia Light Aircraft Championships (WALAC) were held on 28th and 29th November. The formation competition was won by the “Committee Three” on Friday afternoon. Judges John Douglas and Glen Caple awarded first place to the team of Andrew Eldridge, Marco Surace and Mitchell Wells. Despite chilly

and blustery conditions, a good crowd watched from the roof of the clubhouse, well fortified by beverages from the bar.The weather cleared up overnight and Saturday produced perfect flying conditions. The streamer cutting was won by Michael Stenson who managed to turn his C152 on a dime to attack the streamer yet again. Second was Craig Hensley. The spot landing competition was won by Craig Hensley, followed closely by James Murphy in his Jabiru. The forced landing was a real test of ability due to a reasonably strong headwind, which resulted in competitors “floating” over the markers. Jim Di Menna used his considerable experience from club competitions and secured first place.Prizes were awarded on Saturday evening in the Member’s Lounge. Congratulations to Raif and Chazza from Muzz Buzz who laid on a magnificent meal. The Austin Whitter Overall WALAC Champion was Mike Stenson, with Craig Hensley the runner up.The event would not have been possible without the assistance of a team of volunteers. Thank you to John Ridgway, Jim Campbell, Jim Jenkins, Len Creagh, Mick Harcourt, Lori Hensley, Andrew Eldridge, Trevor Jones, John Douglas, Glen Caple, Michael Chlopek and Kovieva Fremy.

The promotions and wine samples at the bar were very well received, with just less than 300 bottles being ordered- and proceeds to help fund the celebratory evening at Jandakot late February.Credit to Linda

ASIC Scheme OverviewThe Department of Infrastructure and Regional

Development has commenced a consultative process with stakeholders to consider ways to

improve security outcomes while reducing unnecessary and costly burdens for the industry. The deadline for submissions is 2 February 2015.As a major stakeholder in the general aviation sector, the Club intends submitting a response to the Department in late January. The submission will comment on the factors such as the cost of renewals, the limited validity of the ASIC, the impractical requirement of pilots requiring an ASIC at certain airports but not at other airports etc..This is an ideal opportunity for our members to voice their opinion of the current regulations. Vale - Ron EastIt is sad to report the passing of Ron East on December 13th, 2014. Ron was an iconic person in the lives of so many pilots in WA. He was an Examiner of Airmen in the good old days of

the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA - now known as CASA). He was an aviation enthusiast, mentor and an all round good bloke. Ron flew in the RAF on Hudson Bombers. When he migrated to Australia, he spent a short time in Victoria before coming to WA, where he took up the position with DCA. I remember occasions on Air Trials when Ron would be present in the DCA Bonanza and when he saw something a little bit hairy, he would pull his floppy

hat down over his eyes pretending not to notice. There would be many hundreds of pilots in WA who would have a very happy and interesting story to tell about episodes spent with Ron in the air. Ron was a mentor and role model to me as he was to so many others. He was a very passionate supporter of the Club and until recently used to visit and attend the Old Fliers Group.Ron retired from CASA (DCA) on his 60th birthday and passed away in his 93rd year. Aviators Australia wide will miss the passing of a true legend.

The Club is launching a program to attract young members to aviation. The program will be called Racwa Young Eagles.

There are a number of great reasons to support this initiative. The average age of the existing pilot population is increasing with time. There are fewer young people entering the flying community, and certainly there are fewer young people who want to fly for recreation. There are a number of explanations - flying is a large commitment of time and money, and there are so many competing and increasingly accessible alternatives these days. This doesn't mean flying has lost its appeal; it just means we have to work harder to entice members into the fold. We haven't done an adequate job of communicating our passion to the young new members we need. Racwa Young Eagles is an opportunity to redress this. Our Club Constitution clearly identifies our responsibilities. Think about these four Objects in the Constitution:• To undertake activities to associate together members and

all persons who are interested in aviation.• To create and foster an interest in aviation in members of

the public. • To promote the development of aviation.

Racwa Young Eagles - February 2015

The Royal Aero Club of WA is proud to announce that the 2015 Racwa Young Eagles program is now open for enrolments. Racwa Young Eagles is an exciting new program designed to provide extraordinary aviation experiences to prospective future aviators between 10 and 16 years of age. This is an exclusive activities-based learning experience, limited to 24 participants. The program operates from the Racwa clubhouse at Jandakot Airport over 7 weeks, commencing 1PM Saturday 21st February 2015.The indicative schedule consists of the following activities:21st February Clubhouse tour, hangar tour, aircraft tour at Racwa28th February Radio procedures, Royal Flying Doctor Service tour, Jandakot Airport tour7th March Parachute operations, aircraft and gear presentation, visit to Langley Park drop zone with Skydive the Beach and Beyond14th March Tour of Air Services fire station at Perth Airport, tour of aircraft and facilities at Perth Airport21st March RAAF Museum tour and radial engine demonstration, Control Tower tour at Jandakot Airport28th March Effect of Controls training and Cessna 152 Aerobat familiarisation4th April Garmin G1000 glass cockpit experience, scenic flight over Perth city

Participants must be club members for the duration of the program - temporary Junior club membership is $70. Annual Junior club membership is $159. Participants receive a Racwa cap and high visibility vest. There is no charge for the activities, although there will be minor incidental costs associated with certain activities.

All supervisors and pilots are qualified and hold Working With Children accreditation.

For information and registration, please contact Keeara Young on 94170013 or via email at [email protected].

See our website for further information www.royalaeroclubwa.com.au.

All supervisors and pilots are qualified and hold Working With Children accreditation.

• To provide training and education in aviation and to promote the development of training and education in aviation.

Unless we are actively fostering an interest in aviation outside the club, and doing our part to safeguard the future of flying, and developing new ways of educating in aviation, we're not meeting the goals our founders set out for us in the Constitution. Racwa Young Eagles achieves all of these goals.Racwa Young Eagles will commence in February 2015 with a 7 week program of exceptional activities designed to educate and delight young prospective aviators in the age range 10 to 16 years. We have arranged a number of exclusive experiences including a tour of Jandakot Airport, a tower visit, a tour of the RFDS facilities and aircraft, a visit to Perth airport and access to a commercial passenger jet, as well as other exciting activities. The group is limited to 24 participants, and we expect the program to sell out. This is a great opportunity for members to promote the club, and support aviation. You can do this by offering your son or daughter, niece or nephew, the opportunity to participate in this fabulous program. But don't wait too long, or you'll miss out. Further details can be found in this edition, or by emailing the Club at [email protected].

RAY

FIELDJan

uary 2015

Hello everyone. The month has flown past. It seems our last TT was published

only a week ago. I hope the weekly emails, including the new “Murrayfield Bit” have been informative. So much

has happened - my last article has been well superseded. We now have the C172 as promised. VH-LTI, an R model has been here for the past 3 weeks. Some photos were published on our website, and are included here also. The C152’s and the Warrior have been busy and we may have a Mooney online for hire shortly as well. Keep an eye on the Murrayfield Bit.Our marketing campaign has been moving from strength to strength. Targeting the local public for TIFs and scenic flights - we are starting to be noticed. By the time this article has been printed the Tiger Moth will have had its first day based at Murrayfield for many years. I will have more to say on that in the next issue. Its next date is Saturday January 10, so start making bookings! Cheaper scenic flights are available with a beautiful backdrop of the Peel region. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique opportunity.John R, John L and Tim M have been hard at work. The project this month has been the front entrance to the field. The goal was

to clean it up and make it more inviting to people driving by, and to get rid of the illusion of an “abandoned” field. I will have some photos next month when it's complete. Well done to all who competed in the WALAC’s this year. It was also the first time I had competed in the competition. Managed to take out second place with team Mike Watts. Well done Andrew, Mitch and Marco. Watch your backs next year. JBeing the January issue, I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a fantastic New Year. I hope your new year’s resolutions were to fly more and even more at Murrayfield. Take care and see you soon.Michael Chlopek OIC Murrayfield

Murrayfield Matters

Vintage Flights From Murrayfield

Murrayfield Airport now offers vintage flights over the Peel Region once a month. Instructor Michael Chlopek is busy transforming Murrayfield Airport to

become an aviation hub. The Murrayfield fleet boasts a C152, C172, Mooney and Piper Warrior, with a Tiger Moth once a month. Other activities include adventure flights in Nanchangs and tandem jumps with Skydive the Beach and Beyond onto the Rockingham beach. The inaugural vintage flight was enjoyed by former club member Selby Munsie, who flew Tiger Moths at Maylands when Harry Beck was the manager. Selbie still has his logbook and licence (No 7566) that was issued in 1954. In 1956 the Club acquired a Chipmunk, which was considered to be “a real aeroplane” as it had brakes and flaps. “It allowed precision flying”, said Selby, “you could aim for a spot and actually land close to your aiming point – you couldn’t do that in a Tiger Moth. You could also steer the aircraft on the ground using brakes.”Selby learned to fly when he was a cartographer. He then became a cadet surveyor and spent many months “under canvas” travelling the length and breadth of Australia.

Unfortunately there was no time for flying. He became a lecturer at Perth Technical College and later at Curtin University, but family commitments prevented him from continuing flying. The beam on his face when he reacquainted himself with the cockpit of a Tiger Moth said it all.Members wanting to take advantage of vintage flights from Murrayfield Airport should contact Michael on 9583 6222 to find out the dates when the grand old lady will pay her next visit to Murrayfield.

We celebrated a successful year of OFG on November 28th. We have had 22 interesting talks on a wide

range of subjects in 2014. It was a chance for me to thank Brian Hernan, Stan Schur, John Ridgway and Ron Griffin for their help during the year.Brian was presented with a Racwa Certificate for a flight in a Tiger Moth and a copy of “the Golden Years” – A history of the RAAF from 1921 to 1971.Stan, John and Ron each received a gift box from San Churro Chocolateria.Michael Taylor won the door prize of a copy of “A Century of Flight” and a bottle of Tawny Port, donated by Racwa.John Harris won second prize of $50.Harry O’Neil and Ken Pittman attended the ANZAC

Albany 1914-2014 and gave first hand accounts of what they experienced there. Our main speaker was Patricia Moran who spoke about her life as a Nurse in Wyndham and the North West in the 1960s. Patricia saw the beauty in the people and the landscape and didn’t dwell on the heat, humidity, mosquitoes, isolation and lack of medical infrastructure. We hope to get Patricia back again to talk about her work with the RFDS.Follow our work on www.youtube.com/user/OldFliersGroupThere is no December Meeting. I look forward to seeing you in 2015:

One of the goals of the strategic plan was to purchase two C172 S

models. VH-ZDR was purchased earlier in the year and the recent purchase of VH-EEP has ensured that this target has been met. The Club will be completing the SIDs program for VH-KTV and VH-BOF before selling these stalwarts. VH-EEN will shortly be added to the fleet, ensuring all Club C172s are either R or S models.

From Mark SkidmoreWhile I have not yet stepped into the role of

Director of Aviation Safety, I just wanted to take this opportunity to start the important job of

communicating with everyone. Communication and consultation are high priorities for me and I have already begun to meet people and organisations from the aviation community. You may notice that I am deliberately describing the aviation sector as a community rather than an industry. This may be a subtle difference but it recognises there is more to aviation than just the commercial operations which are embraced by the term ‘industry’. As an active general aviation pilot I appreciate the commitment to aviation of the many people who are not in any way earning revenue from flying. In fact, as

any private aircraft owner knows, being a part of aviation can cost quite a bit of money. We stay involved because we love aviation and love flying. It is that commitment to aviation that drove me to seek the position of Director of Aviation Safety and it will guide my thinking during my five year term. When I take the reins on 1 January 2015 I will keep listening to everyone who is part of the aviation community, as well as people in the broader Australian community who have an interest in aviation safety. I look forward to meeting and hearing from as many people as possible in the months and years ahead.Have a safe and merry Christmas

“It’s great to be part of aviation” declared Veronica Binns, a captain for Virgin Australia Airlines. Veronica was speaking at the November industry

presentation. She was introduced by Jim Campbell, one of her former students. During her last year at school, Veronica attended a Learn to Fly seminar at the Club which included a trial flight. She completed school and put her university aspiration on hold for a year while she obtained a PPL, aerobatics rating and NVFR. She finished her CPL exams whilst at university, obtained a CPL and started her aviation career as an instructor at the Club in 1997. After three years, she “left the comfort zone of the Club” and moved to Karratha where she flew Barons and Navajos. Veronica completed her ATPLs and became Chief Pilot. Her next step was with Pearl aviation in Darwin flying the King Air and then Alice Springs flying a Metro. After two years, she moved to Cairns as first officer on a Dash 8 for Sunstate Aviation (Qantaslink). In 2003, she joined Virgin Australia where she is a captain on the 737 and Embraer 190. Virgin Australia currently has a staff of 9,400 of which 1,200 pilots are pilots. Their fleet is projected to expand to 146 aircraft in 2016, with over 50 of the latest 737s on the order book to be delivered during the next five years. They service 61 destinations.

Veronica’s advice to commercial pilots included the following:• Staypositive, enthusiasticandenquiring• Stayfocused• NEVERcompromisesafety• Takeopportunitieswhentheypresent• Beyourself• Persistence, persistenceandmorepersistence!Interviewing techniques are very important and applicants should prepare for any interview. “Do your research on the company, dress for success, have friends critique your resume and practice role playing the interview with friends and family” was the advice she gave students.Veronica is married to a pilot and has two children. She admitted that it is tricky balancing family life with her work commitments and is grateful for the extended family support. As a pilot upgrades to bigger aircraft, their management skills need to become more proficient due to the number of

support personnel necessary for larger aircraft. Veronica stressed that the aviation industry is unique due to the camaraderie between pilots. “You will make life-long friends, especially in the early stages of your career”, she said. Her final advice to students was one that has been heard at many of the industry presentations, “Don’t hurry to get into the airlines, general aviation is the most enjoyable phase of your career”.

Congratulations to the Student team of Darren Allbeury, Eugene Ooi and Damian Worsdell for retaining the GM's Trophy at the annual Student-Instructor-Member

competition. Despite fierce opposition from the instructor team, the students managed to hold on to win. The flour bombing element demonstrated that practice is essential, and the safest place was in the middle of the target!

New Flight Instructor

“Stick at it” advised newly qualified instructor Zac Cavanagh. “Everyone has their ups and downs during training but you will get there in the end”.

Zac started flying in 2009 when he enrolled with the ECU Bachelors of Aviation degree. His brother was already training at the Club and his uncle is an A380 captain for Emirates.“I knew that I was on the right track once I had completed my first solo”, said Zac. With James Dargie as his instructor, his flying training progressed slowly as he balanced his flying training with university studies, a part time job as an aquatic supervisor and playing for East Perth in the WAFL. Completing his CPL training in September 2014, Zac obtained a night rating and an instructor’s rating. “We had a lot of laughs during instructor training, which helped as the training is really intense.”Ultimately, Zac would like to become an airline captain

but at present, he would like to use his new qualification and become a flight instructor.Zac’s flying ability is above average”

said flight examiner John

Douglas after the flight test.

G’day Members,Another year ends and a New Year

begins with new challenges and opportunities. Why not make the most of

your membership in 2015 by using the knowledge and experience of the Aero Club's Instructors to kick start your flying adventure, get a new rating or improve your skills in the air. There is a wealth of knowledge at your disposal at the club so make the most of it and get into some training this year. The club competitions have been a bit hot and cold with some poor attendances at some of the competitions, however a couple of new faces at WALAC is encouraging. Anyone contemplating having a crack at competitions will be made more than welcome and should just have a go. It’s great for improving your skills and ensures you practise some of your flying skills you wouldn’t usually do when taking family and friends flying, as well as enjoying the company of a great crew of fellow pilots. This year we will be working on improving participation at the comps and Fly Ins. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, so give me a call if you have a great Fly In destination or if there’s anything you think we should do to improve the Competitions.

Club Captain's Corner

We will also be forming a specific WALAC Committee to oversee the running of WALAC and any improvements to be implemented. If you would like to assist or have any suggestions give me a call or email and we can get started. At this stage we will continue to hold comps at Murrayfield on the second Sunday of the month at 8:30am for breakfast then a briefing at 9:15. The Jandakot comps will also be held on the last Sunday of the month with Registration at 13:45 and a Briefing at 14:00. However the Flying Committee will be having a review of these times to see if any changes can help improve participation so be sure to monitor the emails to remain informed.I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered at WALAC late last year and congratulate Overall Champion Michael Stenson, well done mate. I’d also like to thank the members of the Flying Committee for their hard work in 2014 and look forward to another 12 months of organising flying activities for the members of the greatest aero club in Australia.Happy Landings

Safe Taxiing Practices AIR

CR

AFT H

AN

DLIN

GJan

uary 2015

Taxiing the aircraft to and from

the runway is the easy part - right? Many pilots have an attitude that a flight starts with take-off and ends when you touch down. This may be the reason why some ground

operations are overlooked - especially taxiing an aircraft safely. Taxiing aircraft without care or concentration contributes to a large number of incidents around the globe every year. While some accidents are unavoidable the rest have been categorised as human behaviour. Luckily the statistics in a study of taxi accidents show that few result in injuries, however it does mean big dollars for the owners. Although you may be excited for your flight and just want to get to the runway as quick as possible, there are many factors to consider whilst taxiing. Winds are an essential factor that pilots need to take into consideration when taking off, navigating and landing. Quite impressively we have seen winds send aircraft into bushes and trees, winds that can drop a wing onto the ground and winds that can cause the aircraft to nose over. As a pilot you must pay attention to your flight controls and their positions while taxiing, taking wind into consideration. If you would like to refresh your knowledge on the correct positioning of your controls in the aircraft, whilst on the ground with wind consideration, please refer to the Aircraft Pilot Operating Handbood (POH) in “Normal Procedures”. Mechanical problems make up a small section of safe taxiing practices, incidents and accidents. Problems on the taxiway may occur when pilots try to ride the brakes, when landing gear fails or when tyres are not inflated to the correct amount or are heavily flat spotted. Whilst no aircraft can undergo a comprehensive mechanical inspection prior to every flight, pilots should follow their pre-flight inspection by checking brakes, tyre inflation and general landing gear condition. Please also make sure to report any hard landings or flat spots by completing an incident report. Ground obstructions like buildings, poles, fences, trucks and parked aircraft are mostly fixed, so why do people keep running into

them? Many accidents surprisingly happen in daylight where pilots misjudge the wingtip clearance or are focusing on an obstruction on the opposite side of the plane and hit the opposite wingtip on an obstruction. Not only is this damage a cost to the owners, it also may impact the value of the repaired aircraft. Remember to always be patient when taxiing and concentrate on maintaining clearance on both sides of the aircraft. Finally a huge factor in our fast paced environment is racy behaviours by pilots on the taxiway. Just because an aircraft is made to go as fast as possible in the air, doesn’t mean you need to try it out on the ground. Taxiing too fast has accounted for a huge percentage of accidents in the last few years. After a flight averaging 100 knots, it may seem that the “walking speed” back to your parking bay may test your patience, but keep in mind that aircraft are optimised for the air and you need to respect them on the ground. There is a logical reason that the government have been constantly promoting drivers to pay attention whilst driving a car, and the same concept and message applies to aircraft. Taxiing an aircraft is usually the least most demanding part of the flight which doesn’t mean that you can drop the ball.
