YESTERDAY'S RACE RESULTS FROM | ASCOT PARK | PAGE 15
Strong demand for the progeny of
leading Western Australian stallion
War Chant (Danzig) and a quality
colt by first season sire Winning
Rupert (Written Tycoon) has helped fuel a
buoyant Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale,
continuing the upward market trend of 2020.
The most expensive yearling sold yesterday,
a half-sister to Group 2-winning mare Quilista
(Scandal Keeper) by Yarradale Stud’s War Chant,
made $240,000 while a further 29 lots made
$100,000 or more including a Victoria-bound
$200,000 son of Newgate Farm’s young stallion.
In contrast, there were 24 yearlings who
made six figures last year to a top of $260,000
with three breaking $200,000 at the Magic
Millions’ purpose-built Swan Valley selling
complex. Continued on page 2>>

The Book 1 average was last night
sitting at $71,302, up 9.7 per cent year on year, with a clearance rate of 73
per cent compared to 77 per cent in 2019.
Sydney-based agent Jim Clarke and Attunga Stud’s Brian Nutt signed
for the top-priced War Chant filly on behalf of Victorian owner Geoff
Walsh who is set to race her on the eastern seaboard.
“War Chant has got a very good Group 1-winning filly in Silent Sedition
in the east already who subsequently sold very well as a broodmare ($1.5
million) and he is a proven stallion,” Clarke told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“The filly has got a very big pedigree and she is going to have very good
residual value with Quilista … who is in foal to I Am Invincible, so there’s
a lot of upside. Physically, I thought she was the most impressive type of
the sale.
“Brian Nutt and I looked at every horse in Book 1, but before we got
here she was one that we had earmarked on pedigree as one of the ones
we were particularly interested in and she had looks to match.”
Catalogued as Lot 166 from the Willow Dale Farm draft, the Ellie
Giles-bred filly is eighth foal out of the stakes-placed juvenile winner
Brocky’s Ace (Surtee), making her a half-sister to five winners including
Listed winner Red Can Man (Gingerbread Man) and ATC Sapphire Stakes
(Gr 2, 1200m) winner Quilista.
Nutt’s Attunga Stud sold Quilista at last year’s Magic Millions Gold
Coast National Broodmare Sale for $950,000 to Aquis Farm’s Tony Fung
and the popular Hunter Valley breeder consulted the sprinter’s original
trainer Justin Warwick before committing to buying the filly.
“He was instrumental in my buying her. He gave me the confidence I
probably didn’t have five days ago. I was very happy to get her," Nutt said.
Clarke, who was attending his second Perth sale, has been buying
fillies at the recent yearling sales for a separate syndicate with the view of
trading them at the end of their racing career.
He thought yesterday’s purchase for a client of Nutt’s hit the mark
price wise.
“I think, from a value point of view, it was probably pretty well spot on
what she was worth,” he said.
“Certainly, on pedigree she was an obvious standout in the catalogue
and the fact she had the physique to back up her pedigree was the reason
why we thought she was worth what we paid for her.”
The first horse to hit the $200,000 barrier was the Western Breeders
Alliance-consigned colt by Newgate Farm’s young Group 2-winning
sprinter Winning Rupert who was purchased by Victorian trainer Matt
Laurie.
He was consigned by Western Breeders Alliance (Darling View Stud)
as Lot 161 and is the second foal out of the winning mare Bitter Twist
(California Dane), herself a sister to the stakes-placed Inspector and half-
sister to Perth Listed winner Hoegaarden (Flying Spur).
“I thought he was a standout and obviously I had to bid pretty hard to
get him but he is a really forward, well-muscled, well-balanced colt who is
a typical early running sort of horse,” Laurie said.
“He is from a tough family, speed on speed, and his physical attributes
matched his page and we’re thrilled to get him.”

The filly, who was catalogued as Lot
133, is a half-sister to the 11-time winner Lamasery (Commands) who was
successful at stakes level four times. She is the 11th foal from the unraced
Verse (Quest For Fame), herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Anthems
(Palace Music) and Listed winner Vocalist (Bluebird). The filly is also
from the same family as ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner
Microphone (Exceed And Excel) whose second dam is Vocalist.
Cheng, who races horses in Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong,
believes she was “the top filly of the sale”.
“I really liked her as a type - with a deep girth and beautiful hips,” said
Cheng who was also celebrating her birthday yesterday.
“It was great to be able to buy her off Yarradale Stud as I have had a lot
of success with stock from the farm.”
Her $120,000 colt, who was catalogued as Lot 50, is closely related
to talented Group 2-winning three-year-old Dalasan (Dalakhani) being
out of La Rochelle (Honour And Glory) and a half-brother to the stakes-
placed Khandallah (Kitten’s Joy).
She in turn is the mother of the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-
trained Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Dalasan.
Parnham delivers $170,000 knockout blow This season’s Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800)-winning trainer
Neville Parnham was the first to make a statement at the Perth sale,
securing a colt by War Chant with a single $170,000 bid just ten minutes
into the auction.
Parnham was aware of the presale hype about the colt but the
similarities between his new acquisition and the trainer’s 2019 WA
Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner War Saint were unmissable.
“I thought he was the best of the War Chants and we have had a bit
of luck with the War Chants over the years and then we won the Guineas
with War Saint last November,” Parnham told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“I thought this bloke had a lot of likeness to him in looks and shape, so
I was pretty keen to get hold of him.
“I thought $150,000 would probably stop him but $170,000 was the
only bid I had. I waited until the end and I got them in the finish.”
Parnham, one of WA’s leading trainers for nearly four decades, already
has 75 per cent of the colt sold with breeder Ron Sayers of Yarradale Stud
also set to retain a share.
Catalogued as Lot 5, he is the fourth foal out of the Viscount (Quest For
Fame) mare Diamonds’N’Dreams, making him a half-brother to three-
time winners Together We Dream (Discorsi) and Deadly Shot (Musket).
Parnham said the quality horses stood out and vendors who did
present better-credentialled lots were well rewarded.
The declining clearance rate, therefore, was not a complete surprise
to the trainer.
“I think it has been a pretty handy sale,” he said.
“There has been a few passed in lots but some of those were
disappointing horses. The lots that are nice have made their money.”
Fellow prominent Perth trainer Simon Miller also struck yesterday,
going to $170,000 for a colt by WA’s late champion sire Blackfriars
(Danehill) from the family of dual Group 1 winner Scenic Shot (Scenic).
The colt, who was sold as Lot 104 by Dawson Stud as agent, is the
second living foal out of the placed mare Sky Rumba (Shrewd Rhythm)
who is a half-sister to WA Listed winner London Line (Blackfriars).
His third dam is the stakes-placed Sweepshot (Dr Grace) who is the
dam of the former Dan Morton-trained Scenic Shot as well as the stakes-
placed Flight Path (Bletchley Park).

McEvoys strike for colts by Hunter Valley stallions
Another yearling to feature in the top lots sold yesterday was
the Western Breeders Alliance-offered $170,000 So You Think (High
Chaparral) filly who was bought by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont
Bloodstock.
By the Coolmore-based So You Think, the sire of 24 stakes winners
including five at Group 1 level, the filly is a half-sister to the Magic Millions
WA Trophy (RL, 1400m) winner Enchanted Dream (Patronize) and the
Group 2-placed Mystic Maid (Patronize). The filly was catalogued as Lot 56.
“She oozes class. She had great honesty about her, a great willingness
and her purpose was incredible,” Tony McEvoy said.
Earlier in the session, agent Suman Hedge combined with Tony and
Calvin McEvoy and Belmont Bloodstock’s Damon Gabbedy to secure
a colt by Nicconi (Bianconi) for $160,000 who will be joining the So You
Think filly at the stables of the dual-state trainers.
Hedge, who bought a Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) colt for $285,000 at the
Gold Coast in partnership with the McEvoys and Redwall Bloodstock, was
happy to be able to link with the leading stable to buy the colt who was
offered by Dawson Stud.
“First and foremost he was a lovely, athletic horse who is really strong.
He moves well with good angles and he had a bit of quality about him and,
physically, he was a horse that we rated highly in the sale,” Hedge said.
“Tony felt the same way as I did and Damon Gabbedy, who is doing
some work with Tony. We were all on the same page with him.
“Tony’s had a lot of success with that breed. He’s had a horse like Concealer
run for him and he is out of a fast, running Exceed And Excel mare who won five.
He ticks a lot of boxes for me and I was really happy.”

McEvoy, who was under bidder on a
$370,000 Nicconi colt at last week’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, is a fan
of Nicconi having helped train the Group 1-winning sprinter when an
assistant to David Hayes at Lindsay Park and Hedge was happy to receive
the trainer’s endorsement to buy the colt.
“They call me Tony Nicconi back east,” the trainer said. “I love the
Nicconi breed and had quite a bit to do with the stallion himself when he
was in training.
“Gee, this colt was big and powerful and such a great mover. He’s
going to have a very big stride and is going to be very hard to get past. With
him being a big fellow, we might have to watch his weight, but he looks
like a real running type to me.”
Catalogued as Lot 13, the colt is the third foal out of the five-time
winning mare Elite Ateates (Exceed And Excel) with his second dam
the smart Group 2-winning juvenile Ateates (Zeditave) in turn a sister to
Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Ruffles (Zeditave).
Aquis Farm was also active at the Perth sale, purchasing an Amelia
Park Racing and Breeding-consigned colt by Coolmore sire Pierro
(Lonhro) for $160,000.
The colt’s commercial appeal was aided by the recent important
pedigree update after his two-year-old half-sister La Farola (Deep Field)
won on debut at Pinjarra on January 11.
Catalogued as Lot 15, the colt is the fifth foal for the Melbourne-
winning juvenile and stakes-placed mare Europa Point (Rock Of Gibraltar).
“He is very similar to his half-sister who won her first start for us about
six weeks ago. He’s an early runner, strong and being by Pierro he attracted
a lot of buyers,” Amelia Park’s Sarah Brown said.
“It is always nice to have eastern state buyers here and nice to know that
we have a draft here that those big eastern state buyers are interested in.”
Amelia Park also sold a Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) colt from the
family of Group 1-winning filly Special Harmony (Spinning World) for
$150,000 to trainer Vern Brockman and a Shooting To Win (Northern
Meteor) colt for $140,000 to Pearce Racing.
The son of Darley’s Shooting To Win is half-brother to five winners
including the recent Simon Miller-trained three-year-old filly Kentucky
Love (Uncle Mo) who made it back-to-back victories this campaign when
scoring at Ascot last Wednesday.
Amelia Park’s Peter Walsh, who owns Kentucky Love, was also active
on the other side of the fence, buying a War Chant filly for $130,000 from
Yarradale Stud.
“She was a beautifully balanced filly with a lovely walk. She was eye-
catching to me and we are always interested in buying fillies to race and
bred with,” Brown said.
“We came here looking without being serious about buying but she
had some ‘wow factor’.
Meanwhile, a colt by Gold Front Thoroughbreds’ first season sire
Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock) will also head interstate after Shane
Nichols landed the yearling who is closely related to the Mornington
trainer’s stakes-winning mare Tahitian Dancer (Dawn Approach). The
highest-priced yearling sold by a first season Western Australian-based
stallion, Nichols paid $165,000 for the colt.
Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch described the Book
1 sale as “a really solid day’s trade” but admitted he would have liked to
have seen more horses change hands through the ring.
"The huge average of over $71,000 is well up on last year and the gross
of over $8.8 million is impressive considering we grossed $2 million less
last year,” Bowditch said,
"It's a disappointing clearance rate, which will improve over the next
24 hours.
"As the results indicate everyone was playing a part - from the locals to
our interstate and international visitors."
Bowditch also reserved special mention for Giles, the breeder of
yesterday’s top-priced yearling.
"It was a great result today for one of the state's most celebrated
breeders in Ellie Giles. We couldn't be more thrilled for her to top the
sale," he said.
"(Today’s) sale will present so many opportunities to buyers
considering the healthy prizemoney and incentives around the state.”
The Book 2 sale starts at 11am local time today.

Live Diamond hope for Lindsays
The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained
Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m) winner
Letzbeglam (Snitzel) heads into Saturday’s
Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield
with a live chance and owners Brendan and Jo
Lindsay, who also own Cambridge Stud, are
just thrilled to have a runner in the race. “When
you buy these horses you don’t think of races
like this,” Brendan Lindsay said. “It’s proved to
be a fantastic result to even have a runner in
the Blue Diamond and she’s got to be a good
chance the way she won last start. It’s also great
to have Trent and Natalie training her for us. To
think when I was young I used to back horses
trained by Trent’s father (Paddy) and now all
these years later Trent is training a Group 2
winner for us. Good on them both. They’ve got
there the hard way and I couldn’t be happier for
them.”
Currie chasing back-to-back DiamondsLuke Currie is chasing his second Blue
Diamond Stakes in a row this weekend as he
partners unbeaten Anthony Freedman-trained
Hanseatic (Street Boss) in the $1.5 million race
at Caulfield. The colt has won three races in a
row and if he is to win on Saturday, he would
become the first since Sepoy (Elusive Quality)
to take out the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G)
(Listed, 1000m), Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G)
(Gr 3, 1100m) and then the feature race. "It
would be a good effort but he's in the right
barn and he probably needed the experience
of having another run last time in the Prelude,"
said Currie. "So hopefully we can make it four in
a row. He's definitely the one to beat. I wouldn't
be swapping him for anything else."
Anaheed on track for Oakleigh PlatePeter and Paul Snowden’s three-time Group 2
winner Anaheed (Fastnet Rock) will be looking
to add a Group 1 to her resume in the Oakleigh
Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) and after her impressive
last start win in the Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2,
1100m) over the same course and distance,
connections are optimistic about her chances.
"When we got her in and looked at what options
were available I said that this is probably a race
that's definitely winnable, if her form warranted
it and she came back and raced well first-up,"
Peter Snowden said. "Well, she raced past our
expectations first-up with the time she ran
so we can go into this race now with a bit of
confidence that she's going to be competitive."
Puissance likely to bypass FuturityDespite holding a nomination for the race,
Ciaron Maher, who trains in partnership with
David Eustace, said All-Star Mile (1600m)
contender Heart Of Puissance (Puissance De
Lune) is likely to bypass Saturday’s Futurity
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield in favour
of a benchmark race at Sandown. "We threw
a (Futurity) nomination in for him but he
might kick off next Wednesday at Sandown
in a benchmark 70 over 1500 metres," Maher
told Racing.com. "The last ten days he’s really
started to come together, so next Wednesday
will be used to bring him right up to speed.
Hopefully he can gain a bit of confidence. He’s
still a work in progress and he still does a bit
wrong but he’s a nice horse. If he’s good enough
he should win that easily and use that to bring
him on a bit and he should then be pretty right
for a mile."
Every Rose set to bloom in Silver Slipper
After a luckless run in the Magic Million 2YO
Classic (RL, 1200m), Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3,
1000m) winner Every Rose (Choisir) is set
for Saturday’s Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m)
at Rosehill as Mark Newnham sets her on a
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) path. "She
had no luck when she needed it at the Gold
Coast," Newnham said. "She had two solid runs
leading into the Magic Millions and may need
two going to the Slipper. We'll see how she gets
through Saturday."

McEvoys set three for Typhoon TracyTony and Calvin McEvoy are set to have a three-
pronged attack on the Typhoon Tracy Stakes
(Gr 3, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday
night with Sisstar (Zoustar), Grand Scholar
(Wandjina) and Oh Please Dianna (Deep Field).
Grand Scholar is unbeaten at Moonee Valley
but failed at the Gold Coast last start and Calvin
McEvoy expects her to bounce back on Friday.
“We took her back to Angaston, she freshened-
up at the farm, travelled back to Melbourne
last week and I thought her work was really
good this morning,” McEvoy said. “She still
looks a little big, so she’ll improve out of the
run and tighten up nicely.” On Sisstar, who was
disappointing first-up in the W.J. Adams Stakes
(Listed, 1000m), McEvoy said: “She’s trained
on nicely since that run at Caulfield and we’d
expect a much better showing from her on
Friday night.”
Santa Ana Lane to trialAnthony Freedman’s star sprinter Santa Ana
Lane (Lope De Vega) is set to make his first
public appearance this campaign when he
lines up in an 800-metre trial at Werribee this
morning under regular rider Mark Zahra.
Freedman will also have the Lloyd Williams-
owned Homesman (War Front) competing
in a 1100-metre heat and will be joined by
Group 1 winner Mr Quickie (Shamus Award).
Other notable horses in action at Werribee are
Zipping Classic (Gr 2, 2400m) winner Southern
France (Galileo) and Metropolitan (Gr 1,
2400m) runner-up Gallic Chieftain (Tamayuz).
Con Te Partiro wins high-class trialImported mare Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy),
who failed to get in foal in the spring, won a
high-class barrier trial at Randwick yesterday
in an audition to spring Group races. The Gai
Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained six-year-
old, who won the Dark Jewel Classic (Gr 3,
1400m) at Scone last May, defeated Doncaster
Mile (Gr 1, 1600m)-bound Quackerjack (Not
A Single Doubt) by a long neck, with talented
three-year-old California Zimbol (I Am
Invincible) another one and a quarter lengths
away in third in the 1000-metre course proper
heat. The trial also included New Zealand
filly Probabeel (Savabeel), Group 1-winning
sprinter Pierata (Pierro) and Xilong (Deep
Field).
Probabeel on song for Surround
Jamie Richards believes last-start Karaka 3YO
Classic (RL, 1600m) winner Probabeel (Savabeel)
has travelled to Sydney in good order ahead
of her Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) goal on
Saturday week. She finished fifth, two and a half
lengths behind the winner of heat one at the
Randwick trials yesterday morning. “I thought
she trialled well,” Richards said. “She got back,
which is normal for her, and she got to the outside
and finished well under not too much pressure.
It was probably on a track that she was not too
comfortable on and she does like the better
footing. Glen Boss was happy with the way she
trialled. He said she was a professional that he
never touched the bridle and she gave him a
lovely ride. She had a decent blow and she has a
bit of improvement in her yet.” Click here to view
the Randwick barrier trial replays.
Te Akau Shark settles in wellTe Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle) has also settled
into Sydney in good order, according to Jamie
Richards, with the impressive first-up winner
set to tackle the Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1,
1600m) on Saturday week. “He’s moving well and
he always takes a little while to settle in, he’s not
an overly big eater,” Richard said. “We wanted
to get him over there a bit earlier and get him
settled because he’s got a few big weeks in front
of him.” The trainer’s father Paul is overseeing the
finishing touches on Melody Belle (Commands),
with the ten-time Group 1 winner back in
familiar surroundings at Flemington ahead of her
resuming run in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
at Caulfield on Saturday. “Dad is happy with her,
she did a bit of work on the grass at Flemington
on Saturday morning and looked good,” Richards
said. “She’s going to go over to Caulfield (today)
to have a decent hit-out over there and a bit
of a look around the course, which I think is
important because Caulfield can be a little bit
tricky sometimes.”
Kolding to work at Caulfield
Also set for a look around the Caulfield track
this morning is Golden Eagle (1500m) winner
Kolding (Ocean Park) who will make his
Melbourne debut and take on Melody Belle
in the Futurity Stakes. Regular rider Glen Boss
has been confirmed for Saturday’s mount
after gaining a reduction of a careless riding
suspension on appeal.
‘C S Hayes was Group 1 performance’Last Saturday’s C S Hayes Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m)
saw one of the all time great race finishes between
two star three-year-olds in Alligator Blood (All Too
Hard) and Catalyst (Darci Brahma) and winning
jockey Ryan Maloney, who was aboard the son
of All Too Hard (Casino Prince), believes it was a
Group 1 performance. "It’s probably the highlight
of my career to be honest," Maloney said. "James
(McDonald, Catalyst’s jockey) put it to me before
the corner and to be honest at the 200 (metres),
I thought Catalyst had me but that’s the great
thing about him (Alligator Blood). He loves being
a racehorse and he just wants to win. The last 20
metres, I felt he was actually pulling away from
Catalyst. It was a Group 3 race but I don’t think
anyone would argue with me that it was a Group
1 performance."

No blinkers for CatalystCatalyst and Alligator Blood will meet again in the
Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on Saturday week
but trainer Clayton Chipperfield will not re-apply
blinkers to his son of Darci Brahma (Danheill)
and will instead rely on natural improvement and
weight relief to turn the tables on the Magic Millions
Guineas (RL, 1400m) winner. "It’s probably better
we don’t put them on because if it ends up another
dogfight like that, we’d like for Catalyst to be able to
see what’s right beside him," Chipperfield told RSN
927’s Racing Pulse. "To be beaten a half head by an
absolute superstar gives us more confidence going
into the mile.”
Dame Giselle heads Slipper ballotDespite her disappointing run in last Saturday’s
Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m), the Peter and
Paul Snowden’s $1 million Golden Gift (1100m)
winner Dame Giselle (I Am Invincible) heads
the order of entry for next month’s Golden
Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Unbeaten colt
and Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
favorite Hanseatic (Street Boss) is second in
the ballot with Golden Gift runner-up See
You Soon (Siyouni) third. Current favourite
for the $3.5 million juvenile feature Cellsabeel
(Hinchinbrook) is 16th in the order of entry.
Marquand to extend autumn stayIn-form UK jockey Tom Marquand, who returns
to Australia next month in time for the Coolmore
Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) meeting at Rosehill on
March 14, will spend an extended period in
Sydney for the autumn. Marquand, 21, who rode
Inglis Millennium (RL, 1200m) winner Prime
Star (Starspangledbanner) last Wednesday,
has enjoyed a stellar summer stint in NSW. His
victory in the $2 million Inglis race followed
on from his successful ride on high-priced colt
Prague (Redoute’s Choice) in the Canonbury
Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and Away Game (Snitzel) in
the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Randwick on
February 1. Marquand had five rides at Randwick
on Saturday before heading back to the UK.
Busuttin-Young to expandExpatriate New Zealand training partners Trent
Busuttin and Natalie Young will increase their
presence at the Cranbourne Training Centre
with an additional 40 boxes. The Cranbourne
Turf Club yesterday announced that the pair,
who are currently fourth on the Victorian
trainers’ premiership, will now have 115 boxes
at the centre. Cranbourne is set to become the
main training centre in the state with a number
of Caulfield-based stables expected to relocate
to the facility when the metropolitan course is
closed to training by November 2023.
Cranbourne trainer Sues facing nine chargesCranbourne trainer Mark Sues has been charged
with failing to provide proper and sufficient
nutrition and appropriate veterinary treatment
to four horses. Racing Victoria stewards issued
nine charges relating to welfare against Sues
yesterday, four in the alternative. Stewards allege
that up to July 1 last year, Sues failed to provide
the horses Remodel (Reset), Speech Therapy
(Stratum) and a filly by Excelebration (Exceed
And Excel) with proper and sufficient nutrition.
He has also been charged in the alternative with
failing to provide veterinary treatment for those
horses with the Excelebration filly suffering
from exudative dermatitis. Stewards also allege
up to and including November 26 he failed
to give All In Sync (All Too Hard) proper and
sufficient nutrition. The charges will be heard by
the Victorian Racing Tribunal at a date yet to be
determined.
Jockey outed for four years for cannabisNorth Queensland jockey Mark Elliott has been
disqualified for four years after his sixth positive
random test to cannabis in a decade. Stewards
opened an inquiry after a urine sample was
taken from Elliott at a Townsville race meeting
on January 25. Elliott pleaded guilty to providing
a urine sample which upon analysis was
found to contain the substance 11-nor-delta-
9-tetrahydrocannabainol-9-carboxylic acid, a
metabolite of cannabis. He was disqualified for
four years to begin on February 15 and expire on
February 26, 2024.
Stocking tongue ties bannedRacing Australia has quietly introduced a rule
banning the use of “nylon stocking and adhesive
bandage” for tongue ties. RA’s Veterinary and
Analysts Committee and the Chairman of
Stewards Committee combined to propose the
rule change. The RSPCA has voiced its opposition
to the use of tongue ties, arguing they cause
horses pain, anxiety and distress with difficulty
swallowing as well as possible damage to the
tongue by restricting blood flow. The new rules,
which come into force on April 1, will require
trainers to fit a leather strap or rubber band of
at least 15mm in width or a Lycra or neoprene
tongue tie at least 50mm wide. Warrnambool
trainer Daniel Bowman noted there had been no
consultation with trainers and jockeys before RA
changed the tongue tie rules.
‘Queensland racing in healthy state’Racing Queensland has unveiled its first half
results for the 2019/20 financial year with solid
progress being realised across the industry. RQ's
chairman Steve Wilson said highlights included
a healthy revenue growth (up 25.6 per cent to
$139.4 million), a large increase in returns to
participants (up 20.8 per cent to $104.1m) and an
improvement in attendances and participation
(up 2.1 per cent to 332,496). "The Queensland
racing industry continues to make great strides
thanks to the support and investment of the
state government through their Country Racing
Support Package and additional industry reform
funding," Wilson said. "As a result, there has
been strong economic growth in the size of our
contribution. During the first half of this financial
year wagering turnover on Queensland product
has reached a new half year record of $2.23 billion
which represents a $64.8 million increase.”
Coffs Harbour abandonedThe Northern Rivers Racing Association Country
Championship heat will be run at Grafton on
Tuesday after today’s Coffs Harbour meeting was
abandoned due to the state of the track. Racing
NSW officials had already postponed the Coffs
Harbour meeting from last Friday to today, but
the wet weather has not let up to allow the track
to dry out sufficiently to race on. The field size for
the Country Championships heat will be reduced
to 14 for the 1400-metre race due to the change
of venue. The field and barrier draws will remain
the same.

Stud workers raising money for Fire ServiceStud workers Ed Goff and Harrison Badger are
currently undertaking a 270 kilometre Scone to
Sydney charity trek to raise funds for the NSW
Rural Fire Service in order to support their efforts
in battling the devastating bushfires. Badger, whose
family have Bridge House Stud in Ireland, has spent
the last two years working at Kitchwin Hills Stud
and Yarraman Park Stud, while Goff, a son of UK-
based agent Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock, has
spent the last three months working at Yarraman
Park. They are over halfway through the challenge
and hope to reach Sydney on Friday. They have
so far raised nearly $11,000 of their $20,000 target
via a gofundme page with generous donations
and sponsorships from studs, agents, trainers and
friends in Australia, Ireland and the UK.
ATC donate hay to fire-affected south coastMore than 1700 bales of hay are ready to be
distributed to properties on the NSW South Coast
from funds raised at the Australian Turf Club's
recent bushfire appeal race day. As well as the roll-
out of hay to the Cobargo and Moruya districts on
Tuesday, the ATC Foundation will provide money
to BlazeAid to source local materials to rebuild
fencing in the area. The appeal in conjunction with
Racing NSW has so far raised $150,000 for bushfire
relief with ATC Foundation's public officer Steve
McMahon to be joined by the local member for
Bega, Andrew Constance at the Moruya Jockey Club
on Tuesday morning. The distribution of funds from
the Racing for the Bushfire Appeal comes in addition
to the $500,000 being distributed by Racing NSW to
thoroughbred racing participants and employees
directly impacted by bushfires.
NEW ZEALAND
Colgan happy to be on Two IllicitVinnie Colgan is not conceding the New
Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) to Dragon Leap
(Pierro) despite the gelding’s impressive
victory at the weekend and is happy to be on
displaced favourite Two Illicit (Jimmy Choux)
in Saturday week’s race. Colgan will continue
his association with Two Illicit, but he got a
further line on Dragon Leap and fellow Derby
contender Scorpz (Charm Spirit) when he was
a late replacement for Jason Waddell aboard
the latter in Saturday’s Avondale Guineas (Gr
2, 2100m) at Ellerslie. He guided the Stephen
Marsh-trained Scorpz into second, a length and
a half behind Dragon Leap, who reconfirmed
his place at the top of the market for the $1
million three-year-old classic. “I’m glad I don’t
have to make the call between Dragon Leap and
Two Illicit,” Colgan said. “He (Dragon Leap) has
got Derby written all over him. He was off the
bridle, trucking all the way, and Opie (Bosson)
didn’t have to do much on him. I’m sure there
were a couple more lengths there if he had
squeezed him.”

is likely to be given his shot in the Australian
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) by Bob Peters after a

standing for a fee of US$125,000 this year.
War Chant - The Simon Miller-trained Flower
Of War (4 m ex Indian Flower by Husson)

Spring’s major racing has highlighted
again that jockeys are arguably
the world’s greatest sportsmen
and women and, almost without
question, the most unique.
Regardless of age or gender; regardless of
background, reputation or accomplishments
they compete on equal terms. This even applies
to children (teenagers) if they happen to have
outridden their claim.
The world’s best travel from country to
country - probably with a business class airfare
- but without an appearance fee.
There is no other legitimate and physically
demanding sport where this happens. They risk
their lives daily.
They have greater balance and dexterity
than Kelly Slater and Valentino Rossi combined.
Greater fitness and upper body strength than
any other athlete according to several studies.
Greater courage is demanded of them
than in any other sport I can imagine. Not to
mention that split second decision making,
a component of most sports, is absolutely
exacerbated in race riding in terms not only of
winning but also survival.
This demands greater promotion and
celebration.
They come from extraordinarily diverse
backgrounds. Take this week at Flemington
alone.
Barend Vorster, here from South Africa via
Singapore, rides a winner on Oaks day. Young
South Australian Jake Toeroek scored on Derby
day - he’d not ridden a winner,
of any sort, in Melbourne until
January this year.
Meanwhile, Daryl “Digger”
McLellan, all but won the Oaks
on Never Listen on Thursday. On
Tuesday, he was punching them
around at Muswellbrook. The bush
reserves to first grade in two days is
unimaginable in any other arena.
There, at Muswellbrook,
he was locking horns with
61-year-old hall-of-famer Robert
Thompson who still more than
holds his own on any racecourse.
And while the usual suspects - Craig
Williams, Damien Oliver, Dwayne Dunn, Hugh
Bowman and Nash Rawiller - have largely
monopolised the Cup week winners (thus far)
- Billy Egan, Toeroek and Vorster along with an
Irishman and a handful of kiwis have been on
the board.
And on Cox Plate Day, 23-year-old Jamie
Kah had the better of 47-year-old Oliver who’s
been unstoppable since, in a Group 3 race
at the Valley while Linda Meech has also, as
always, been among the winners.
Meech has ridden more winners than any
other jockey in Victoria this season. She did
likewise, and by a fair way, last season.
Oliver may be nearing 50 but is riding
“better than ever” according to rival and
commentator Corey Brown.
Glen Boss is 50 and, in recent weeks, has
ridden the winners of two races worth $14
million and $7.5 million. No pressure.
They are quite remarkable these jockeys
coping with pressure and expectation and fear
of failure. The unheralded Declan Bates I’m
sure overcame elements of all of that to win
the Group 1 Rupert Clarke on Begood Toya
Mother.
Perhaps they learn to cope from an early
age. Michelle Payne rode her first winner at 15.
She was literally a little girl. I wondered then
at the almost surreal absurdity of wizened old
punters trusting their money to her. Little did
they know she’d win the Cup.
Now the jockeys have one more thing
to cope with - the vitriol of social media as
Michael Walker, for whom I feel sorry, certainly
discovered this week.
Across the board, the only solution is to
turn off these often insidious platforms.
In Walker’s specific case, the solution may
be to ban the whip. It’s inevitable. And the
reality is that jockeys, here and around the
world, are so good they will adapt.

Jockeys - the unsung heroes of the sporting world

It was, unquestionably, a wonderful result
for Australasia in the 2019 Melbourne
Cup which produced the tightest finish
in 20 years.
However, it may be premature to declare
that it signals a return to continuing local
celebrations in the years to come on the first
Tuesday in November.
Less than one length separated the first five
to finish - from the winner Vow And Declare -
the Australian bred son of Declaration Of War
(War Front) - trained by Danny O’Brien to the
Paul Preusker trained Surprise Baby, the New
Zealand bred by Shocking (Street Cry) whose
career has been moulded in Australia.
The winner’s performance and that of
Surprise Baby, arguably the very best effort in a
very slowly run race, may be seen as portents of
a local resurrection.
While I’m sure that Vow And Declare and
Surprise Bay, veterans of just 13 and 11 starts
respectively, will remain forces in Australian
racing and that there are positive pointers
from the three-year-old stock of local stallions;
the argument against any wholesale local
rejuvenation in the Cup comes from the fact
that northern hemisphere bred runners filled
the other top seven placings in a race which had
just 2.1 lengths seperate the first nine.
The northern hemisphere bred three-year-
old Il Paradisio (Galileo) was arguably unlucky
not to have won and thereby produce a third
straight win for overseas bred and trained
horses of that age.
Lloyd Williams almost struck again with an
import, Master Of Reality (Frankel) which has
become a recurring theme. Prince Of Arran
(Shirocco) ran extremely well as he continues
to imitate/emulate the grand Red Cadeaux.
