    SIR CHARLES DILKfi.

Ills Vindication Near at Hand His Placeas the Liberal Leader.

If Sir Charles Dilke remainsmuch longer in private life, says aLondon dispatch of April 2d, it willbe on his own determination. Theseare the words which Justin McCarthy used only a few days sincein conversation with an Americanfriend just returned from England.

But will the people let him? There are English and Irish constituencies to day which would re-turn him to the Commons on satisfactory majorities. It would not berash to say that Dilke might goback from London if he would onlyconsent or evince the slightest desire. There arc radical constituencies wnich admire tne man asthey admire none other, right within London, that could give him imajority that would be a stronsvindication of the awful chargesthat have been made against him.

Surely, it may be said, the English people cannot forget the Crawford scandal that is only five yearsold? No, but the English peopleare coming to see that Dilke's wordis better than that of any numberof such confessed adultresses asMrs. Crawford. It was only a questiori of credence from the first, andbecause Mrs. Crawford describedaccurately Dilke's room, the hanglnsrs, furniture and fixings, thegood moral jury believed all thatshe said. Dilke at the trial claimedthat the whole thing was a conspir-acy. Between whom and just howit was managed ho did not know.

He resigned his seat from Chelsea in one of the saddest letters offarewell that ever came fromstatesman, went with his new andtrusting wife to Europe, and hasbided his time. He said to JustinMcCarthy on the day of what hetermed his " conviction " that therewas nothing to be done but to resign his seat, and he insisted uponit, much against his friend s judgment. But he spoke with hope ofa day coming when he should havea full and complete vindication inthe eyes and heartsof the pooplc. For years he has been keeping theclosest watch over all parties whowere mixed up in that very nastyaffair, and is now drawing all theloose ends together.

I have it from a friend a closepolitical friend that the suspicionwhich he had at the trial, butwhich never came to tho surface, that another woman, who was jealous of Mrs. Mark Pattison, towhom Dilke was engaged, was atthe bottom of the whole business, was the -- author of some of theanonrmous notes which Dilke received and was the prompter ofMrs. Crawford in her storv. Thislatter woman openly acknowledgedon the witness stand that she didn'tcare who knew she was an adui-tres- s,

for the only thing she wanted was to be free from her loathsome and somewhat aged husbam

The fact is that Dilke must cometo the front. There is no man totake his place. Chamberlain washis rival, but he has proved a disappointment. Labouchere tries tolead tne itadicais, but is nevertaken seriously. There must besome man in sympathy with theRadicals, Home Rulers and Gladstone Liberals in general, who canhold tho elements together andstand against Balfour in the Commons.

Dilke is for home rule. Ho is thestrongest man in the empire on theforeign question and he is broad mhome policy. Gladstone has neverlost faith in him, and the Parnellies to a man would cheer if hetook his seat to-morro- w. Pub-lishers are eager for his books, thepeople read them i.nd the papersquote irom tnem. ne nas conducted himself modestly and peopie admire him who do not believehis theory of a conspiracy, which, however, is now thoroughly accepted by the best people of London. Dilke has done nothing-i- n hisown defense and refuses to acceptmany social invitations which comem upon him. His day of social vin-dication is very near at hand, andtnen he will take immediate rankwith Gladstone and above all otherEnglish statesmen. It is probablethat within three months twentyleading English Liberals will haverequested Dilke to re-ente- r 'publiclife.

    HAWAIIAN SUGAR FOR NEW YORK.

It is reported that the bark CeyIon has been docked at Oaklandwharf to discharge her cargo ofHawaiian raw sugar into the carsat that point, so that it may be sentacross the continent to be refinedelsewhere, and possibly be returnedto this market for sale. The VexIon arrived here March 3d, anddocked at the seawall. Sho reported 14.826 bags - sugar, equal to1,728,800 pounds consigned to E. L.G. Steele & Co. This sugar was intended for the American Sugar Re-finery. This refinery was closedby order of the Court on February17th, for an alleged connection withthe Sugar Trust. As no refiningcan be done thereuntil the questionof the ownership of the property issettled, those who own the sugarcoming to that refinery will citherhave to store it r reship it to somepart of the country where it cun.berefined. It is understood that theAmerican Refinery controls about60 per cent, of the Hawaiian Sugarcrop. If the Court nold that tneAmerican Refinery has been legallyclosed." a market will have to befound for this portion of the Hawaiian crop upen its arrival here.It requires a large amount of moneyto handle so much sugar, and thecargoes must be realized upon asrapidly as possible, in order to pre-vent financial embarrassments tothe parties interested.

Unless Havemeyer & Elder areallowed to reopen the AmericanRefinery, it is possible they mayconclude to send a portion of theirsugar direct from Honolulu to NewYork or Boston. It will be remem-bered that on account of an over-supp- ly

of Hawaiian sugar here, theAmerican Sugar Refinery Com-pany, which was then operatingthe plant of the refinery, sent sev-eral cargoes to New York from thisport. The first of these ships lefthere April 23, 1887, and the lastJune 12, 1888. In all eight cargoeswere sent to New York from thisport in those two years, as follows:

About Coffee. The average bulk of the genuine

coffee imported into the UnitedStates is 8,000,000 bags, 180,000,000pounds per annum. Experts esti-mate that frilly 20 per cent of thecoffee sold to consumers is bogus, which raises the consumption to216,000,000 pounds. Taking 30 centsper pound as the average retail

The Filtering Medium is a NATURALSTONE, mined from the earth. It isunlike any other Etone.

IT DOES NOT ABSORB AND BE-COME FOUL.

IMPURITIES never PENETRATEit, but lie on the surface, and internallythe stone remains as pure and whiteafter years of use as when taken fromthe mine.

The Gate City Stone Filter is a perfectsuccess. It is the only real filter 1 haveever seen. I would not be without one forany consideration. It converts our lakewater into the best drinking water in theworld. Henry M. Lyman, M. D.,

to Know All About Them.you are buying a house in aneighborhood unknown to you, you

will naturally ask all kinds of ques-tions. You will want to know if thedrainage is good, if the air is pure, ifthere Has ever been malaria, how farit is to the depot and postoffice, butten to one you don't inquire if there

re any borrowers in the neighborhood. Now, a chronic borrower is a deadly

nuisance in a community. A womanwho is always 'just out" of saleratuswill stir up more trouble in a neighbor-hood than a mad dog --.and a flock offifteen hens and a rooster.

She will run in on you at any andall hours, and want to borrow gust alittle sugar, or spice, till she can sendto the grocer's. She really did notknow she was anywhere near out tillshe went about her cooking, and thenshe found she hadn't a dust of sugarin the house, and not a soul aroundanywhere that she could sent out afterany.

And she will tell you that she doesso hate to trouble you; for if there isanything on earth she dislikes to do itis to bo. .ow and she never does itwhen she can help it; but now her piecrust is all on the plates, and she wasobliged to, because she could notspare the time to run to the grocer's.And she will sit down in your kitchenand stop half an hour, and talk abouteverybody in town; and,. meanwhile, she will take an account of every-thing her eyes fall on. and she will seebehind your stove the cobwebs thatyou forgot to brush down this morn-ing; and she will notice the old bootsthat your husband left on the wood-bo- x
