FINALS SELECTIONEvaluation data will be used throughout the tournament to assist the Chief of Umpires with court allocation and Finals selections.Tennis Australia will invite the top 42 performing Line Umpires, based on evaluation data compiled during the tournament, to stay for the finals weekend. These names will be supplied to the Chair Umpires selected for the Men’s and Women’s finals, who will choose their teams from this list in consultation with the Chief.

ADDITIONAL DATESIn addition to the officials selected for finals, Tennis Australia may offer additional main draw days to officials who perform highly during qualifying (and have not been preselected for main draw), or additional main draw days beyond their contracted selection. Officials are not required to accept the offer of additional days.

EVALUATIONSLine Umpires will be evaluated by the Chair Umpire for all matches using the ITF 7-1 rating scale. Evaluations will also be completed where possible by Coaches for Line Umpires working on non-Hawkeye courts using the same rating scale.Officials may be approached by Coaches to discuss ways in which individuals can improve their performance. Officials should also feel free to approach Coaches to request feedback. Evaluation data will be used throughout the tournament to assist with court allocation and Finals selections. Evaluations for Australian Line Umpires will be published as soon as practicable following the event.International Line Umpires may request their evaluation data to be sent to them following the event and this will be sent via email as soon as practicable.

COURT ALLOCATION Officials require an “A” grade on the relevant line to be allocated on Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and Hisense Arena. Those with the appropriate grade for these show courts will also be rotated onto outside courts throughout the tournament in order to provide the opportunity for all appropriately graded officials to service these courts.Officials require an “A” or “B” grade on the relevant line to be allocated on outside courts with Hawkeye technology in use. Officials require an “A” or “B” grade on a service or base line to be allocated to those lines on ANY other court at the AO2018 Main Draw.Grades may be adjusted (up or down) during the tournament based on evaluations, with data analysis completed daily. This means some officials who start the tournament on a “B” grade, and perform well, may be treated as an “A” grade for the purposes of court allocation later in the event, and vice versa. Please note – this adjustment will not be reflected on the TA Officials website as it will be used for AO2018 allocation purposes only.

Image and ProfessionalismOfficials must remember that when in uniform both on and off court they are readily identifiable and will be judged by their conduct and appearance. It is therefore vital that you maintain the highest standards of professionalism. This includes showing respect and support for the tournament, the players, umpires’ operation and your colleagues at all times and most particularly in the hearing of the general public, tennis fraternity or the media. Please be circumspect. If there is something you genuinely disagree with, talk it over with the Chief of Officials, Deputy Chief of Officials of Umpires or Officiating Manager.

AutographsAustralian Open policy strictly prohibits you from requesting any autographs, photographs or souvenirs/ memorabilia from any players or other tournament guests.

Consumption of AlcoholPlease note that consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited while in uniform. The Australian Open has a ‘zero alcohol policy’ and expects officials to totally abstain from alcohol consumption before and whilst on duty and be in the best possible shape to officiate on a daily basis.

MediaAt times, you may be approached by media representatives to make comment on the tournament and your role within it. There is a strict media policy in place and any requests for interviews and comments must be made through Darren Pearce (General Manager – Communications). Please inform the umpires office immediately if you are approached for any comment at all.

SpectatingAs a member of the Australian Open tournament staff, you have the privilege of being able to watch matches on any of the outside courts, however you are NOT permitted to spectate on either Rod Laver Arena or Margaret Court Arena. Please refrain from barracking or otherwise supporting any players at any time regardless of whether or not you are wearing your umpire uniform.

ITF/ATP/WTA Tour Code for OfficialsAll umpires must be familiar with and strictly adhere to the ITF/ATP/WTA Code for Officials, in addition to any other specific Australian Open Tournament regulations.

Social MediaOfficials must always be careful when using Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and ensure they never post anything which could be considered “Inside Information”.Inside information is any information that is not public knowledge, could influence the outcome of a match and could be used by someone to bet on the outcome of a match. Examples of inside information include:• Overhearing a conversation in a corridor about a player

being sick, receiving treatment for an injury, or dealing with a personal situation

• Finding out that the stadium roofs will be closed before this has been announced by the tournament

• Court or match assignments (your own or other officials), as this could make you or other officials the target of a person betting on the outcome of a match

You should also never post information such as:• Player names of matches you’re officiating or watching• Weather conditions• Opinions/discussions about officiating or the tournament itselfAll officials are advised to avoid having players as “friends”, “following” players, or “liking” pages or comments that are tennis related. Though it may well be entirely innocent, there is the possible perception by others of a relationship that could compromise your impartiality.Be careful of friends who “tag” you in inappropriate photos or comments that are tournament related, and ask for these to be removed if necessary.Posting sensible photos portraying a professional image is acceptable, but if you have any doubts as to a photo’s suitability, you are advised not to post it. As a general rule, you should not post any photos taken in areas where there is no public access. Remember, if something is not already in the public domain, it is not appropriate to post on social media.
