LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear athletes and parents,

TheAustralianVolleyballAcademy(AVA)isanationalvolleyballdevelopment program and was created with the purpose of coaching exceptionalindividualstoidentifyandpursuetheirsportinggoalswhilstalsosupportingthemwiththeirpersonaldevelopment.This also widens the net for a broader cohort of talent joining our sport at differentagesandthroughdifferentpathways.

We seek to select athletes who display a talent for volleyball, while also possessing the ability and motivationforwhatittakestodevelopintoaneliteathlete.Familysupportissoimportanttothesuccessofourathletesandweseektoengageonaholistic“wholeofperson”basiswithallourathletes.

Weprovidehigh-performancesupportandfacilitiesthroughtheAustralianInstituteofSporttoensurethatourathletesarewellsupportedwiththeirhealthandwellbeing.

Thisisaformativetimeinourathletes’careers,andwewanttoensurethattheyrecognisetheopportunitythat exists for them not only on the court (beach or indoor), but also the chance to explore the meaningful waysinwhichtheycandefinethemselvesbeyondtheirsport.

We encourage our athletes to engage with our community and support our athletes to connect and have a positiveimpactinthecommunity.

Westriveforourathletestobeleadersintheirsport,bylearningandfurtherdevelopingqualitiessuchasdisciplineanddiligence,whilstalsodisplayingenthusiasmandencouragementforthenextgenerationofathletestolookupto.

Our Australian Volleyball Academy athletes have a social responsibility to be the very best they can be, which iswhyweareconstantlychallengingourathletestoalwaysdobetterandtostartcreatingthefuturethattheywantforthemselvesrightnow.WeaskthatourAustralianVolleyballAcademyathletescommittoun-lockingalltheirpotential,becauseoncetheydo,thepossibilitiesareendless.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

TheprimaryobjectiveoftheAustralianVolleyballAcademy(AVA)istoidentifyanddevelopOlympicpotentialathletesforVolleyballandBeachVolleyball.ItistheHigh-PerformanceDevelopmentProgramforvolleyballandbeachvolleyballathleteswhoaspiretoreachtheeliteleveloftheirsport.TheAVAheadquartersandtrainingbasearelocatedattheAustralianInstituteofSportinCanberra.

TheAVAhasatraininganddevelopmentfocusandprovidesaholisticdevelopmentprogram,includingphys-ical,mentalandlifeskillstrainingaimedatdevelopingtheattributesandabilitiesrequiredtocompeteatthehighestlevel.AthleteswillgraduatetothenextlevelofthepathwaywhereoptionsincludetheFIVBBeachVolleyballWorldTour,NorthAmericancollege,andEuropeanprofessionalclubs.

An integrated approach to athlete development, including training in both volleyball and beach volleyball, is a key feature of the AVA approach, based on the principle that training in one discipline will produce perfor-mancebenefitsintheother.

Athleteswillgenerallyspend2-3yearstrainingfulltime(20-25hoursperweek)attheAVApreparingtobereadyfortheirnextstepintheVolleyballhighperformancepathway.

InadditiontotheintegrateddevelopmentprogramconductedattheAVAheadquartersbasedattheAIS,Canberra,theAcademyalsoconductscampsfortalented,aspirationalyoungathletesduringschoolholidayperiodsandalignedtonationalcompetitions.TheAVAcampsservebothtointroduceathletestotheAVAprogramandtoprovidespecifictrainingandcompetitionexperiences.

Strong,directlinkswiththeVANationalTeamPrograms(Men,Women,Beach)JuniorDevelopmentProgram(JDP)andStateprogramsareakeypartoftheoperationalapproach,tostrengthenaverticallyintegratedapproachtoathletedevelopment.Thismeansthatathleteswhoaspiretorealisetheirpotentialfornationalcompetitionsaredevelopedusinganapproachalignedtothatusedtodevelopathletesfortheinternationalpodium.



PROGRAM HISTORY

The2021AVAProgramhasdevelopedfromandismodelledontheAustralianInstituteofSportprogramsinMen’s,Women’sandBeachVolleyball.Thecoreconceptofthemodelistogatherthebestathletesinasinglelocation(bestwiththebest)trainingunderhighlyskilledcoachesandsupportedwithexceptionalsportsmedicine,scienceandathletedevelopmentservices.

TheAISMen’sVolleyballprogram(commencedinSydney1990)joinedtheAISWomen’sprogram(commencedinPerth1993)whenbothrelocatedtoCanberrain1997toprepareAustralia’sNationalTeamsforthe2000SydneyOlympics.

TheAISBeachVolleyballprogramcommencedinAdelaidein2005,basedonanOlympicsfocussedNationalTeamprogramwhichhadcommencedin1997.

In2014theprogramsbecameknownasCentresofExcellence(COE)until2020whentheAustralianVolleyballAcademy(AVA)becameVolleyball’scentraliseddevelopmentprogramforthebestyoungVolleyballandBeachVolleyballathletes.

TheAVAprogramisnowfocussedondevelopingathleteswhohavethepotentialtorepresentAustraliaontheworldstageinbothVolleyballandBeachVolleyball.

COACH(BEACH) AnneMeijndertsisthespecialistBeachCoachattheAVAaswellasbeingtheLeadStrength&ConditioningcoachforVolleyballAustralia’sPathwaysprogram.AnnebringsexperiencefromanumberofbeachandindoorclubsaswellastheNationalBeachprogramintheNetherlands.SheisanS&Cexpertinadditiontoavolleyballcoachandusesthisbackgroundtomaximisetransferbetweenworkdoneinthegymandon-courtskills.
