(ARA) — In many parts of the country, winter can test even the

most seasoned driver’s skills with sudden road and weather changes. In ideal circumstances you have warning of what Old Man Wintermight bring for the day, but many times wet roads can become icy anda few flurries can become a snowstorm without any warning at all.

While you can’t avoid unforeseeable weather changes, you can makesure your car is maintained and ready for winter driving. From usinga radiator coolant additive to carrying an emergency breakdown kit inyour trunk, here are some tips to prepare your vehicle for winter driv-ing:

Check your battery: Instead of landing on your “I Forgot” list, putthis one at the top. Make sure your battery posts and connections arefree of corrosion and that the battery has the water it needs. If yourbattery is older than three years, have a certified repair shop test itsability to hold a charge.

Belts and hoses: When you’re having your vehicle serviced, makethe mechanic checks the belts and hoses for wear and tear, regardlessof the age of your car. Cold weather can also affect the belts and hosesof a modern car, so an inspection can’t hurt.

Have the right antifreeze mix: You will want to aim for a 50-50 mix ofantifreeze (coolant) and water inside your radiator. This prevents themixture from freezing at extremely cold temperatures. Or try using acoolant additive like Royal Purple’s Purple Ice that is a high perfor-mance, synthetic, radiator coolant additive. Royal Purple recom-mends a minimum of 20 percent antifreeze concentration be used instreet-driven vehicles because Purple Ice has no effect on the boilingand/or freezing point of water. Learn more at www.coolerradia-to rs. c o m .

Check your four-wheel drive: If your vehicle has four-wheel drive, you probably haven’t used it during the summer, so it’s good idea tocheck the status of your four-wheel drive system. Make sure the sys-tem engages and disengages easily and that all the drivers of the vehi-cle know how and when to use the system.

(ARA) — Which is cheaper — a monthly carpayment for a new vehicle that will almostcertainly have lower maintenance and repaircosts than an older car? Or keeping on top ofregular maintenance and repair of an oldercar, and saving yourself the monthly car pay-ment?

If the numbers are any clue, it would seemmore Americans believe holding on to an old-er car costs less than paying for a new one.The average age of passenger cars is nowmore than 9 years, according to data fromR.L. Polk. And the average price of a new cartops $28,000, according to the Federal TradeCommission. What’s more, older cars depre-ciate less and often cost less to insure.

Hanging on to a car — and taking care of it— can definitely save you money versus tak-ing on a new-car payment. The key to maxi-mizing your savings on an old car is actuallyto spend a little on regular maintenance. Thatwill allow you to avoid more costly, emergen-cy repairs caused by the breakdown of poorlymaintained parts.

Follow these simple steps to ensure goodmaintenance helps you avoid expensive re-p a i rs :

1. Get to know the owner’s manual. Yourow n e r ’s manual will provide vital information

on your vehicle’s systems, and should includea maintenance schedule. If you no longer havethe owner’s manual or want more detailedmaintenance information for your car, youcan buy a factory service manual online. Autoparts retailer RockAuto.com sells manualsfor $12 to $50 — money well spent if it helpsyou avoid a repair that costs hundreds or event h o u s a n d s.

2. Take care of the timing belt. Most carsnewer than 20 years old have timing belts thatneed to be changed, sometimes as often as ev-ery 60,000 miles. When the timing belt breaksit may either simply leave the car immobileor, worse, if the car has what the RockAu-to.com auto parts catalog calls an “interfer-ence engine,” then a broken timing belt willlikely cause expensive damage to other en-gine parts. Look in your owner’s manual tosee if your car has a timing belt and when itmust be replaced.

3. Check your fluids. Make sure you knowthe manufacturer’s recommendations forwhat type of oil, antifreeze, transmission, power steering and brake fluid your vehicleuses. Using outdated or the wrong fluid cancause damage — and void any remaining war-ranty on your car. Check your owner’s manual

to determine what kind of fluid to use andwhen each needs to be changed.

4. Pay attention to shock absorbers andstruts. These parts protect the suspension, steering, brakes and other vehicle systems.Waiting until the car starts to ride funny orbounce before replacing the shocks and strutsmay cause costly damage to other parts. Plus,a car that handles and stops poorly is lesssafe. Monroe.com presents a strong case forreplacing original shocks and struts on mostpopular cars at 50,000 miles. Consult your ser-vice manual or mechanic to get recommenda-tions for your specific vehicle.

5. Stay on schedule. The maintenanceschedule in your owner’s or shop manual willalso list important inspections to perform pe-riodically, and repairs or maintenance youcan expect the vehicle will need throughoutits serviceable life. It will often be cheaper toreplace auto parts before they break than af-ter. Use the chart in your manual to keeptrack of completed maintenance.

Performing regularly scheduled mainte-nance also will allow you to anticipate expens-es and budget for them — a tactic which willalways save you more money than paying foremergency repairs.

(ARA) — Windows down, musicturned up, friends giggling in theback seat, freedom . . . it’s themoment all teenagers dream of —getting their drivers license.

Teen drivers are often euphoricwith this new sense of indepen-dence. After all, getting a driverslicense is a big rite of passage.Teens are inundated, and rightful-ly so, with statistics and horrificstories that point to the dangers ofdriving while intoxicated. Howev-er, new research shows that dis-tracted driving is among the lead-ing causes of auto accidents, andthe problem is getting worse.

“Although laws have been putinto place in the spirit of eliminat-ing dangerous distractions fordrivers, it’s critical that parents, teachers and influencers at largetalk to teenagers about the dan-gers of driving distracted,” s aysDuke Daugherty, vice president ofauto at Fireman’s Fund Insur-ance. “It seems harmless to takeyour eyes off the road for a fewseconds to send a text, or changethe station, but those few secondscould cost the loss of lives, and alifetime of angst.”

Research complied by the Na-tional Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration estimates that dis-tracted driving caused 6,000deaths and 500,000 injuries in 2008.And data shows that these num-bers are continuing to grow. Re-search also shows that teendrivers are four times more likelyto be involved in a distracted-re-lated collision than any other ageg ro u p .

In general, three types of dis-tractions are most dangerous forteenagers on the road. These dis-tractions can be visual (actionsthat require drivers to take theireyes off the road), manual (ac-tions that require taking hands offthe steering wheel) or cognitive(actions that require drivers totake their minds off what they’redoing).

Local agencies, police depart-ments and focus groups have putinto place programs intended toinform teenagers of the dangersof distracted driving, but it’s cru-cial for parents and schools tokeep the dialogue going soteenagers understand the urgencyof the problem.

“Encourage your teenagers tobe completely alert and fully fo-cused on the road and their sur-roundings while driving,” s aysDaugherty. “Parents need to mod-el good behavior in front of theirkids by not texting or makingcalls that distract from driving. Ifwe all take steps to show how im-portant this is, we will see a dropin the behavior by teens.”

Discuss and stress the followingdriving guidelines:

* Keep both hands on the steer-ing wheel and eyes on the road(use mirrors).

* Avoid cell phone use — Cellphones are the number one dis-traction for teenager drivers. Cellphone use falls under the cate-gories of visual, manual and cog-nitive distractions. Mobile tech-nology has made texting, surfingthe Internet and social network-ing all too easy.

* Encourage teenagers to avoidusing their phones, for anythingat all, until they are safely pulledoff the road and parked. Devicesare available to disable cell phoneuse in autos.

Drivers younger than age 20represent the highest proportionof distracted drivers involved infatal crashes, according to the Na-tional Automotive Sampling Sys-tem (NASS). Reiterate to yourteenagers that making a phonecall, using the Internet or sendinga text message is never more im-portant than somebody’s life. Ifthey are driving with friends whoparticipate in cell phone use whiledriving, encourage them to bebold and speak up.

Teenagers should also refrainfrom the following activities whiledriving, according to the US De-partment of Transportation:

* Eating and drinking* Having lengthy or involved

discussions with passengers* Grooming* Reading (including maps)* Using a PDA or navigation

sys t e m* Watching a video* Changing the radio station,

CD or MP3 player.
