Greetings from Spain, Turkey and Poland!

This is the first issue of our School News Magazine. But it’s different from other school magazines because this news magazine includes news from

three different countries. In this issue, you will see the presentations of the students, some poems, puzzles, tales and recipes. It includes the weather

report of three countries and it lets us see the differences. We need a logo for our news magazine and we’ve started a competition for it. All made by our

students.

Our school’s name is Virgen de la Guía. There are 140 students and 21 teachers. In the hall is the caretaker and he young children. In the 3rd floor are the young, the pre-school. In the 3rd floor there is h our 5t class. Our teacher`s name is Montse, our English teacher`s name is Maite and our Basque teacher’s name is Zuriñe.

On 2nd floor library, 1st class, 2nd class and euskera room.On the 3rd floor English room, 3rd class, 4th class, 5th class, 6th class and music room.

Tarsus is a Turkish city 27 kilometers east of Mersin, best known as the birthplace of Paul the

Apostle.

Tarsus was the most important commercial port in the province of Cilicia since 2300 BC. A few

decades before Christ, the Romans granted her the status of a free city with the privileges such a

title entailed.

Mark Antony and Cleopatra lived in Tarsus in the 1st century BC.

The Apostle Paul was born in Tarsus and seemed to be proud of his birthplace. In Jerusalem, as

he was being arrested, Saint Paul told the tribune: "I am a Jew and a citizen of the well-known

city of Tarsus in Cilicia."

THE LEGEND OF ŞAHMERAN

According to the legend; the king of the snakes Sahmeran was in love with the daughter of king

of Tarsus. While the pretty princess was bathing in the Old Hamam (Sahmeran Hamam) which is

still in use today, Sahmeran used to secretly watch the princess from the dome on top of the

hamam where the king of snakes ascend. Once, while watching the princess, Sahmeran fell

down into the hamam and princess’s guards cut his head. It is believed that the stains on the

hamam’s walls are traces of Sahmeran’s blood.

Republic Day is an official Turkish Holiday and celebrated every year on October 29.

Republic Day or Cumhuriyet Bayramı is the anniversary of the declaration of the Turkish Republic. This is a huge celebration in Kaş, arguably one of the largest and best in Turkey.

All official government offices and schools are closed, there are celebrations all over the country and in Ankara, government and other officials participate.

School students present programs and flags are everywhere. People sing songs, frequently play marching music, and at night, the entertainment continues where there will be fireworks, dancing, music, food and other entertainment.

Many many years ago there was a little girl. She always wore a red cap. So everybody called her “little Red Riding Hood” One day her mother said , “Red Riding Hood , your grandmother is ill ,you know. I prepared some food for her. Take these t hings to her. She will be glad to have them” Little Red Riding Hood took the basket end left her home. The grandmother was living in a small cottage. The cottage was away from her home.The road to the cottage lay through a forest .As Little Red Riding Hood was passing throuh the forest, she saw many lovely wild flowers , “ I will take some of these flowers for grandma” , thought Little Red Riding Hood.“She will be pleased to see them.” So she put her basket on the ground, and began to pick up the flowers. Just then a wolf came out of the forest. “Good morning Little Red Riding Hood.Where are you going?” he asked.“I’m going to see my granmother” replied Little Red Riding Hood. “She lives in her cottage .She is ill, and there is nobody to look after her.I’m taking her some food.” “I will go and tell her” , said the wolf “That you are coming” The wicked wolf ran to grandma’s house. He ate the poor old woman. Then he put on her clothes , and lay into her bed. Soon Little Red Riding Hood arrived at the cottage and knocked at the door. “Come in ,dear!” said the wolf. Little Red Riding Hood went in and sat beside the bed. She was surprised to see the wolf in the bed instead of her grandmother. “ What big eyes you have ,grandma!” said Little Red Riding Hood, wondering. “ All the better to hear you with my dear” said the wolf Little Red Riding Hood wondered all the more.”Oh! What big teeth you have grandma!” said the Little Red Riding Hood. “ All the better to eat you with” said the wolf and sprang out of bed. Little Red Riding Hood screamed and ran towards the door . Just then a hunter came in. He killed the wicked wolf with his axe.

Little . Red Riding Hood was very glad to see him and they both went back their home.

SPANISH OMELETTE

The favourite dish of

Spanish people.

Tortilla de patatas is basically a potato omelette (about 4cm thick). It is popular all over Spain and often served in bars as a tapa and is eaten either hot or cold. Some people prefer to make it without the onions.

Ingredients 4 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 6 eggs

1 onion, chopped

¼ litre olive oil

Salt

HOW TO MAKE ITFirst, heat the oil in a large frying pan and then gently fry the sliced potatoes until almost soft, stirring from time to time so that they don't burn on the bottom of the pan. Add the onion and continue frying until all the onion is soft. Drain the vegetables in a colander to get rid of the excess oil.

Beat the eggs in a bowl and season with salt. Add the potatoes, etc. and mix well and check seasoning.

Heat a little oil in a frying pan on a moderate heat. Pour in the potatoes and eggs and shake the frying pan from time to time so that the omelette doesn't stick to the bottom. Once the bottom of the omelette has set, turn the heat down low and cover the pan. After about ten minutes, turn the omelette by placing either a flat plate or saucepan lid on the frying pan and quickly turning over. Gently slide the omelette back into the frying pan and continue frying, once again shaking the pan from time to time so that it doesn't stick to the bottom, until it has set all the way through.

sauerkraut 2 kg marjoram

HOW TO MAKE ITCut the meat. Shred sweet cabbage, sauerkraut rinse with cold water. Stir them together. Take a big pot and put all ingredients into the pot. Add black pepper, tomatoes, bay leaves, marjoram, dried plums, mushrooms. Season it with broth. Cook bigos for 5 hours. The longer it is cooked, the more delicious it is. It is perfect for cool days.

DUMPLINGS

Take some flour, water, eggs, oil and knead a dough. Each piece of dough roll and fill it with stuffing. It may be cottage cheese, sauerkraut with mushrooms and onion, minced meat, or even

fruit like strawberries or blueberries. Then glue each dumpling and put them into a boiling water. Cook a few minutes. Delicious!

News from Turkish School

The participant students of this project write their poems in English for our news

magazine. They prepare puzzles and research on some topics. They will act a drama in English at school. They practice

their roles these days.

There is an Art competition in Tarsus and most of the students draw pictures for the

competition. We have another global school enterprise competition. The participant

students work like bees. They produce house ornaments. And we are preparing to welcome

our Comenius partners in January.

News from Spain

Students are taking part in another eTwinning project: “Christmas exchange cards”. We are

writing Christmas cards to 15 European countries and when we get them they will be

shown in the school hall.

We are also preparing the Christmas festival with songs in different languages and plays.

Our school is a multicultural one so this month we are celebrating the Romania

Culture.

Our students have visited RIALIA to take part in different Science workshops.

News from Poland

 Students from our school work hard as usual and they are happy with the e-twinning project. Last year we had a Comenius project in our school.  Now we are preparing to take part in popular Polish charity action which is called "The band of Christmas help". Our students

perform at school (sing songs, play in school dramas) to help ill children in Polish hospitals.
