Welcome to our new look magazine ‘Inspire’. For our new magazine we have given great thought to how best we keep schools informed about our work and highlight some of the great work that is taking place to raise pupil achievement through the strategic use of PE, physical activity and sport. You will find the same engaging and informative content from our former Sporting Start and Sporting Best publications, but we have condensed them into one magazine so you can cherry-pick content of interest from across all schools.

In this edition of ‘Inspire’ you will read about the findings from

the Youth Sport Trust’s first PE and school sport survey. We had an excellent response, with nearly 2,000 schools across the country completing our online questionnaire. The results have given us real food for thought with positive news in some areas, but also an opportunity to reflect on how we can support schools more in others. It is of particular interest to see how the survey findings recognise the positive contribution that PE and sport can make to whole school improvement which is something of upmost importance to us at the Youth Sport Trust. If you would like to see the review of the survey findings please visit page 12.

During this academic year schools have had to consider the impact of the new curriculum and the time they allocate to PE within it. Many headteachers are looking to

BARONESS SUE CAMPBELL CBE CHAIR, YOUTH SPORT TRUST

WELCOMEactively promote the significance of PE and sport as part of the refreshed curriculum and are clear about the important role the subject has on the development of employability skills and improving the overall wellbeing and academic performance of young people. This is certainly something I would encourage. I very much hope you enjoy reading our first edition of ‘Inspire’.

POLITICALUPDATE

Phil Chamberlain Director of Policy and Communications, Youth Sport Trust

ESSENTIAL READING LIST

Autumn is always a busy time in politics and this year is no exception with a wide range of reports published, consultations launched and political campaigning taking place, both for the hard-fought Scottish Referendum and the looming general election. At the Youth Sport Trust we have been working hard to ensure that PE and school sport is kept at the top of the political agenda at this critical time, making the case for PE and school sport as a valuable tool to improve health, educational, and social outcomes for young people.

Indeed, we were pleased to see the Labour Party acknowledge the benefits of sport in its consultation document, ‘More Sport For All’. The document sets out the party’s current thinking on raising participation in sport and includes specific proposals on school provision. The Trust will be responding to this document, along with consultations from the Department of Education and Ofqual on the revised PE GCSE and A Level content, and Public Heath England on the draft physical activity framework. We will also be keeping a close eye on the Headteacher standards review, as well as the launch of the ‘Alternative School Performance Tables’, an initiative which aims to bypass Government to make more school performance data available to parents.

Elsewhere, we recently participated in a roundtable discussion with Education Secretary Nicky Morgan on ‘building character and resilience’, with the Secretary of State announcing £5 million of extra funding to support initiatives in this area. In Parliament, the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee

published their ‘Women and Sport’ report which expressed concern about the long-term health implications of low female participation rates. The Youth Sport Trust is already addressing the issues highlighted in the report, having launched our ‘Girls Active’ toolkit earlier on in the year.

Finally, the Department for Education has published new research into the impact of the first year of the £150 million Sport Premium funding. The results are positive; showing signs that the funding is improving the quality of PE in primary schools and making a real difference to the lives of young people. Whilst this is encouraging news, we will continue to emphasise the need for the investment to be used sustainably to ensure the benefits are maximised for years to come.

Ofsted explore the link between the quality of sport provision, the effectiveness of a school and the student’s performance in their GCSEs.

We are in an era of diminishing centralisation and greater autonomy for schools, which has largely been welcomed across education. For PE and sport this has lead to real challenges in the transition period. Prior to 2010, School Sport Partnerships brought capacity that worked across schools. Posts were employed in ‘host schools’ and opportunities were made available to groups of schools to maximise economies of scale.

Removing these structures now means schools across the country offer vastly different PE and sport opportunities dependent on many factors, including local support available, quality of staff and budget. There are obvious advantages and disadvantages to this approach.

At the Youth Sport Trust, we are now seeing a mixed economy of PE and sport offers and structural solutions. Some areas have retained the same partnerships as before and are thriving, others have developed new ones, and some schools are happy to be working in isolation. The Primary PE and Sport Premium has been an important part in this jigsaw — both encouraging primary schools to be part of the evolving system and giving them the resource to do it effectively.

It used to be common for headteachers to be significant players in local partnerships, with strategic responsibility for PE and

sport. Headteachers understand the benefits of collaboration and recognise what can be gained by developing strategic partnerships to maximise PE and sport opportunities. In the past year, many headteachers have been re-forming them — and we are proud to be supporting this.

The London Headteacher Alliance is a group of headteachers who look at the provision of PE, physical activity and sport strategically across London to benefit young people. Leeds, Cornwall, Birmingham, Manchester and North Yorkshire have developed similar groups, and we are aware of partnerships being developed in over 50% of county areas.

By the end of this academic year, there could be a headteacher-led group in every county playing a strategic leadership role for PE and sport. If these are truly connected, we believe that this could provide a positive PE and sport experience for every young person, and sustainable protection against potential local or national policy changes.

Headteacher alliances — driving strategic development

It is an honour to work with such a proactive, committed set of leaders who share the belief that the power of sport can improve the lives of all young people.

With no national PE and school sport survey undertaken since 2010, there has been an absence of up-to-date information and a lack of national intelligence on provision, activity levels of pupils, and emerging trends across PE, physical activity and school sport.

We launched our National PE and school sport survey during National School Sport Week in June 2014, with the intention to identify the varying levels of provision across the country and give schools the opportunity to benchmark their performance locally and nationally.

Since the Department of Education announced in June 2013 that they were revoking the use of National Curriculum levels as a form of assessment, schools and PE Departments have been planning how best to measure their students’ progress within PE.

While some schools have seen this as an opportunity to refresh their approach to assessment, many have also been concerned about how to devise a new system. To help smooth this transition, the Youth Sport Trust have developed PE assessment tools for primary and secondary schools.

Assessing without levels

SECONDARY FOCUS

The Secondary PE Assessment Tool allows teachers to build a portfolio of attainment and evidence for each learner, showing their progress, achievements and sporting performance.

The secondary PE assessment tool can be purchased via Youth Sport Direct: youthsportdirect.org

This evidence is then matched to students’ personal records, tracking their progress over time. This allows PE departments to focus on the areas that they want to develop in their learners; whether that is employability, people skills or physical ability.

Students use iPads to capture footage and photographs during lessons, evidencing how they met learning objectives.

Skills2Achieve is an online tool that tracks physical literacy progress in primary and special schools, recognising and rewarding children’s development.

PRIMARY FOCUS

The primary assessment tool is due to launch in January 2015, to register your interest, email [email protected]

Skills2Achieve supports both formative and summative assessment, and provides ongoing evidence of progress.

Set against the National Curriculum 2014 and the Physical Literacy Framework, Skills2Achieve uses ‘I can...’ statements and a multi-ability approach. This enables schools to demonstrate progress and support improvement in both PE and in spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.

School Rugby Ambassadors are supported by a full set of resources and will also receive regular communications with new ideas and opportunities to help them to maximise their role.

The programme was launched during National School Sport Week at Wilmslow High School in Cheshire, one of our 14 regional hub schools for the programme.

Over 100 Year 7 and 8 students competed in a touch rugby tournament, with matches umpired by Year 10 GCSE students, while special guests, ex-England internationals Fran Matthews and Will Greenwood ran master classes in rugby skills.

The Youth Sport Trust has launched the School Rugby Ambassador programme in the run up to Rugby World Cup 2015, developed in partnership with the Rugby Football Union and England Rugby 2015.

The programme develops young people’s leadership skills through rugby, helping them to articulate their skills and apply them to an employment setting. School Rugby Ambassador training is led within schools and is supported by opportunities directly related to the sport and Rugby World Cup 2015.

All secondary schools can sign up to the programme and select four School Rugby Ambassadors, two female and two male, who can take on the following roles in their own school and surrounding primary schools:

To be an ambassador and voice for Rugby World Cup 2015 in their secondary school;

To increase rugby participation using the inspiration of the tournament; and

To run events inspired by Rugby World Cup 2015 for young people.

It was an excellent start to what I’m sure will be a fantastic 18 months, and the Rugby World Cup 2015 values of sportsmanship, respect, enjoyment, discipline and teamwork were all on display. There will be much more to come, so watch this space!

School Rugby Ambassador Sophie Kraunsoe said:

The Youth Sport Trust has always promoted collaboration as a vital tool for raising standards — both within schools to widen the impact of PE and school sport on whole school priorities, and between schools to share best practice and expertise.

We are bringing this spirit of collaboration to our new network of Innovation Schools. The schools will work across seven areas of specialism, using the power of PE and sport to improve young people’s aspiration, attainment, achievement and employability.

Schools joining the Youth Sport Trust Innovation School network are invited to identify one strand as a specialism. This could be either an area where success has already been proven, or it may be a new area that has been identified as a priority for the school.

Innovation Schools need to have the commitment to make the work a key focus of the school’s development over the next three years and the capacity to share learning throughout the network.

Most teachers will agree that with this job comes pressures and challenges, but one of the most rewarding parts is seeing transformational change in a young person. In my time at Burlington School I have worked with some inspiring young children, but there’s one that really stands out.

Last year was hard for Elliott Hatton. His dad became ill and had to use a wheelchair, with Elliott becoming unsettled and losing confidence. Around the same time, some of his friends started bullying him.

Through Sporting Promise, an initiative that encourages young people to take part in PE and school sport, I was introduced to the idea of sports leaders and thought this would be perfect for Elliot, a natural cricketer.

Sporting Promise Young Person of the Year

Kerry Scruton, a teacher at Burlington School in Bridlington tells us how she was inspired by an award-winning pupil.

Elliot was proud to have been chosen. It rebuilt his self-belief and helped him make new friendships; he went from hating school to coming in early to plan activities.

Inspired by Elliot’s story, I nominated him for the Outstanding Young Person of the Year Award for Sporting Promise. I couldn’t believe it when we were told he had won! As part of the prize, our school received a special visit from Olympic legend and Sporting Promise ambassador, Sir Steve Redgrave. Steve personally congratulated Elliot, which was another huge boost.

Elliot is a great role model for young people and his courage is admirable. It’s stories like this that make my job all the more worthwhile.

For children to be ‘secondary school ready’ it is imperative that they are ready physically, as well as socially and emotionally. However, we are seeing declining activity levels in children aged 9 and 10 as a result of their lack of physical literacy but also their declining levels of health and fitness. Large numbers of young people are leaving primary school without the skills to be physically active, the physical fitness to apply those skills and the readiness to learn. This can have a critical knock-on effect in their transition to secondary school.

We have recently launched a new partnership with Virgin Active as part of their Active Inspiration campaign. The fitness programme Active Crew has been designed to support primary schools to target children between the ages of 8–11 who are not yet ‘secondary school ready’ — either in terms of their physical health or engagement with physical activity.

It is widely acknowledged that stress and anxiety hinders performance, whether that is in the professional sports arena or in the classroom. As our education system moves towards emphasising examinations — requiring students to be ‘at the top of their game’ at key moments of the academic year — it is now even more important to support young people through this process. The Youth Sport Trust have been examining ways in which physical activity can play a role in the emotional wellbeing of students at this critical time, particularly in how being active can relieve school related anxieties.

We are working with YoungMinds to develop a programme that will look to address factors that can hinder achievement for many young people in secondary schools.

Under the ‘YoungMinds Vs’ campaign we will be training our ChangingLives athlete mentors to work on physical activity projects with young people who are displaying stress and anxiety, and are in danger of not realising their potential.

We will be evaluating how these sessions and the support of the athlete mentor can alleviate stress issues and ensure that these young people achieve everything of which they are capable. The project launches later this year with four Youth Sport Trust Member schools and we will be looking to extend the programme to more schools in 2015.

Young people from the Young Ambassador programme and the Project Ability’s Step into Sport programme came together in September for an inclusive conference at the University of Hertfordshire to develop their leadership skills.

Planned jointly by Pinewood and Cavendish Schools, the Youth Sport Trust’s Project Ability and Leadership, Coaching and Volunteering schools in Hertfordshire, the conference brought together 150 young leaders for a series of workshops to help them to think inclusively, as well as developing their leadership skills.

Attendees participated in dodgeball, sitting volleyball and dance, all of which were designed to be fully inclusive. These young leaders are now responsible for taking these activities back to their own schools in order to engage more young people, both with and without disabilities, in physical activity and sport.

Paralympian and Youth Sport Trust Athlete Mentor, Sam Ruddock, led a personal development workshop to encourage young people to think

Embedding inclusion in youth sport leadership

about their own leadership skills and how to make the most of them in sport, school and life.

Attendees loved the event and throughout the day were thinking and behaving inclusively in everything they said and did. With such a positive approach and outlook, the Youth Sport Trust anticipates that their impact back in their schools will be enormous.

Regional Young Ambassador conferences are taking place throughout the Autumn and Spring terms across the UK.

Inspire pupils across the curriculum

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has worked with the Youth Sport Trust to develop an online tool which provides downloadable resources for teachers of all subjects to use rugby as a catalyst for learning.

The website provides lesson plans, videos, images, and supporting resources for a range of subjects, assemblies and tutor time. Underpinning the resources are the RFU values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

With one year to go to Rugby World Cup 2015, and the women having just become world champions, now is the perfect time to inspire your pupils by running an assembly on the tournament. If you have School Rugby Ambassadors then you can also encourage them to deliver the assembly.

When I was born I was diagnosed with a physical disability called club foot but fortunately this was corrected from an early age, enabling me to participate in sport. I grew up on a council estate in a single parent family and I enjoyed my early school days, but for the wrong reasons. I loved it more because I could see my friends and be disruptive in classes, which almost led to me being excluded.

MAGGIE ALPHONSI MBE:

These current and former athletes are making a significant impact and help young people to understand that whatever your ability — be that sporting or academic — you can succeed in life.

I also loved sport though and fortunately my PE teacher suggested I take up rugby, as it would help me manage my discipline and allow me to maximise my strengths. I then joined my local rugby club Saracens at 13, which is when my career officially kicked off and eventually led to me becoming a world cup winner earlier this year. It is a moment that will live with me forever.

I have balanced my international rugby career with a full time job at the Youth Sport Trust. My role involves overseeing more than 80 ChangingLives Athlete Mentors who visit schools to inspire young people. These current and former athletes are making a significant impact and help young people to understand that whatever your ability — be that sporting or academic — you can succeed in life.

FINAL SCORE

2015 promises to be an exciting year for the Youth Sport Trust as we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary. When I reflect on the journey the Trust has taken in that time I feel an immense sense of pride. It is an organisation that has established such a rich history of making a real difference and positive change to the quality of PE and sport in schools.

From the inception of the Trust in the 1990s led by Sir John Beckwith and supported by Duncan Goodhew and Baroness Sue Campbell, we are now established as the leading organisation championing PE and sport. Our journey over the last 20 years has seen us supporting thousands of schools across the country and our work has had a direct impact on millions of young people.

We have some very exciting activities planned for 2015 to

mark this occasion which will look back on the successes of the Youth Sport Trust and also look ahead to what the future challenges and opportunities may be. 2015 will also be an interesting year with the upcoming general election. There will undoubtedly be a lot of discussion and debate during this time from all political parties on the future direction of PE and sport. As you will have read in this edition of ‘Inspire’, we will be launching our own manifesto in January which will outline the key areas that we believe will need support going forward. These strategic priorities have been shaped after hearing the views of a range of stakeholders and will ensure that politicians from all sides are clear as to where we believe action is required.

I hope you have enjoyed our first edition of ‘Inspire’. We’d love to hear your feedback so please take a moment to complete our questionnaire bit.ly/YST-Magazine-Survey
