THe Four ConTinenTsKENT MONKMAN

ARTIST: KenT MonKMAn

Kent Monkman’s works examine the way Indigenous American and Canadian history has been presented in art by nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists such as George Catlin and Paul Kane, constructing new stories through images that take into account the missing narratives and perspectives of Aboriginal peoples.

Many of Monkman’s works have strong queer or gay male imagery and deal with sexuality and Christianity as they have been affected by colonialism in Canada and the United States. He became interested with these issues of gender and queer or “two-spirit” Indigenous sexualities after discovering that George Catlin encountered two-spirit peoples in his travels and refused to include them in his paintings of “traditional” aboriginal life.

Bringing together the large-scale works that comprise Kent Monkman’s suite of paintings entitled The Four Continents, a reworking of Tiepolo’s Apollo and The Four Continents, this book explores the creation of these contemporary studies that address the original Eurocentric fantasies of “the other”.

Monkman’s paintings, which are reproduced here in full using gatefolds, present a collation of tragic-comedic scenarios, resulting in mythical, graphic and satirical depictions, heavily influenced by the anti-colonial approach that Monkman takes in his work. The process of each painting that the artist has undertaken as part of the suite is illustrated throughout the book, in addition to texts from contributing writers that contextualise Monkman’s work within the confines of contemporary art, as well as the embedded sociological and political issues that are explored as part of this.

Kent Monkman is a Canadian artist of Cree ancestry who works with a variety of mediums, including painting, film/video, performance, and installation. Monkman’s work is represented in numerous public and private collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Museum London and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

LosT uTopiasPHOTOGrAPHS By JADE DOSKOW

ARTIST: JAde doSKow AUTHoR: RICHARd PARe

Architectural and landscape photographer Jade doskow is known for her rigorously composed and eerily poetic images that examine the intersection of people, nature and time. In Lost Utopias Jade doskow presents this substantial body of work, completed over the past decade.

Jade Doskow (b 1978, Pennsylvania) is an award-winning photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. She holds a BA in Philosophy of Art and Music from New York University and an MFA in Photography & Video from the School of Visual Arts. She is currently on the photography faculty of the School of Visual Arts and the International Center of Photography, and was recently named by American Photo as “One to Watch”.

Since 2007, American photographer Jade Doskow has been documenting the remains of World’s Fair sites, once iconic global attractions that have often been repurposed for less noble aspirations or neglected and fallen into decay. Lost Utopias brings together the substantial body of work that Doskow has completed over the past decade, including iconic monuments such as the Seattle Space Needle, the Eiffel Tower, Brussels’ Palais des Expositions and New York’s Unisphere.

Doskow’s large-scale colour photographs poignantly illustrate the utopian architecture and art that has surrounded the World’s Fairs, across both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Presented in a handsome, large-scale hardback book, Doskow’s work carries a unique sense of both grandeur and dreaminess, whilst also reflecting upon the often temporary purposes that these structures once held.

edIToRS: TIMoTHy LonG, CHRISTIne RAMSAy, eLIzAbeTH MATHeSon

Atom egoyan is one of the most successful independent filmmakers to emerge from Canada, working also in the fields of opera, the stage, and lens-based installation art.

Steenbeckett: Atom Egoyan provides an insight into the internationally renowned filmmaker and lens-based installation artist. Based on Egoyan’s film version (and installation) of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape, Steenbeckett explores a haunted, ageing man reviewing and reflecting upon self-made tape recordings he made earlier in life. The book contemplates the nature of memory, and explores Egoyan’s fascination with the obsolescence of technology, the divide of analogue/digital and changing contexts of presentation.

Commissioned by Artangel, Steenbeckett, 2002, saw Egoyan transform a space in the former Museum of Mankind in London into a sensual goodbye to cinema using excerpts of 35mm footage, and remains his most important installation work to date.

This publication includes critical texts documenting and analysing the work, plus an extended interview with the artist.

Published in partnership with the MacKenzie Art Gallery and Strandline Curatorial Collective.

THe WooD THaT Doesn’T Look Like an eLepHanT

THE CHASE

AUTHoRS: ben CASey eT AL

There was an old Indian craftsman who carved beautiful little elephants from unpromising blocks of timber. Asked how he did it, he simply replied: “I just cut away the wood that doesn’t look like an elephant.”

The craftsman’s seemingly simple tale has remained the doctrine of creative agency The Chase for 30 years; from strategic planning, to conceptual thinking, to the final crafting in which every mark has to justify its reason for being.

To illustrate the breadth and diversity of their work, the book is structured into the categories found in design award annuals, but inverted so as to showcase the work of one agency over three decades. The book is organised by design categories such as “direct mail” and “calendars” where renowned design writers, editors and practitioners judge projects by the agency, offering a global perspective on their work and asking the question, “Do these ideas stand the test of time?” The critics also weigh in on whether ideas will be more or less important to the needs of an ever-changing media world.

The Chase creative design agency has consistently been one of the UK’s most awarded creative consultants with numerous accolades from D&AD, Creative Review Annual, Design Week and Art Directors Club, among many others. The Chase currently works with many high-profile brands such as Tesco, Transport for London, Clio, M&S Bank, Royal Mail and BASF.

edIToR: CLAIRe MAndeRConTRIbUToRS: dAve beeCH, RICHARd CoRK, SARAH KenT

Sculpture Shock is a revelatory exploration of the processes and production of nine artists and their winning contributions to the ground breaking Sculpture Shock Award (2013–2015) for temporary site-specific interventions in non-traditional environments.

A crucial contribution to existing scholarship on site-specific interventions, the book encompasses a wide range of artistic practices from object making to performance and engaging with diverse media such as light, sound and text through the award-winning work of key contemporary artists.

Based in London with the Royal Society of British Sculptors, three artists were selected each year for the Sculpture Shock Award by a panel of prominent critics, curators, art historians and editors including Richard Wilson RA and Cornelia Parker OBE RA. Given a three-month studio residency and £3,000, the artists were tasked with creating a temporary installation in response to one of three challenging and invigorating sites: subterranean (the unseen world beneath our city), ambulatory (without physical confines in movement through space and time) and historic (an illustrious building in London).

This richly illustrated publication is contextualised by contributions from the selection panel, reflecting a year of attending exhibitions, conversing with and supporting the artists throughout their residency, and writing for the project blog. Bringing together selected material produced over the time period of the award with newly commissioned essays these critical voices include: Dave Beech, writer, curator and former Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art; Richard Cork, British art historian, editor, critic and broadcaster; and Sarah Kent, former visual arts editor of Time Out and the ICA’s Director of Exhibitions.

AUTHoR: vInCenzo PIeTRoPAoLoConTRIbUToRS: don SnydeR, MAIA-MARI SUTnIK

Ritual brings together the work of acclaimed photographer vincenzo Pietropaolo, documenting Toronto’s now legendary easter procession, comprising of 150 photographs spanning 46 years of work, an interview by don Snyder and Maia-Mari Sutnik.

Italian-born, Canadian-based documentary photographer Vincenzo Pietropaolo has made it his life’s mission to photograph the immigrant experience, working with class, culture and social justice issues. Considered “one of Canada’s pre-eminent documentary photographers”, his work is distinguished for the sense of dignity and empathy toward his s ubjects.

The book is an historic documentation, unparalleled in scope, of the Good Friday procession—an elaborate event that takes place annually in the streets of Toronto’s Little Italy, the largest Italian immigrant community in the world. Consisting of multiple re-enactments with live actors and statues of Biblical tableaux vivants that depict the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), the event is the emotional high point of the community.

Pietropaolo has attended the event for over four decades, documenting its transformation from a tiny local parish affair to a major urban gathering to which tens of thousands throng every year in reverence or as curious onlookers. Ritual is a moving document of social history that reflects the acculturation of an immigrant community of humble origins into a dynamic life-force of their city.

Pietropaolo’s critically acclaimed work has been exhibited internationally in locations including New York, Mexico City, Rome, Amsterdam and Zurich. His work has been collected by numerous institutions and foundations, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

An essay from Pietropaolo, discussing the history of the procession and his life as an Italian immigrant, an introduction by Maia-Mari Sutnik, Curator of Photography, Art Gallery of Ontario, and an interview with Pietropaolo by Don Snyder, of the School of Image Arts, Ryerson University accompanies Pietropaulo’s unique photographic record.

roCkY GrassY MounTain in JuneDrAWINGS/TONy ANGUHALLUq

AUTHoRS: Tony AnGUHALLUq, RobeRT KARdoSH

Bringing together work produced across the last decade, Rocky Grassy Mountain in June presents the unique drawing style of the Inuit artist Tony Anguhalluq.

Raised in the Nunavut community of Baker Lake by the prominent artists Luke Anguhadluq and his wife Marion Tuu’luq, Anguhalluq has developed a distinctive artistic expression, choosing to reduce the forms of the landscape to near abstraction, frequently employing aerial and side views in the same image. Anguhalluq combines a non-representational technique—his landscapes are often conceived as interlocking patterns of heavily outlined, solidly coloured silhouettes—with the use of horizon lines as a compositional convention.

The works feature an expressive tension between the flat picture and an illusive pictorial depth. Anguhalluq’s exuberant work is explored in the book through an essay by Robert Kardosh, Director/Curator of Marion Scott Gallery and Kardosh Projects.

Born in 1970, Anguhalluq has exhibited widely across North America and is included in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada, amongst others.

TeaCHinG painTinGHOW CAN PAINTING BE TAUGHT IN ArT

SCHOOLS?

edIToRS: IAn HARTSHoRne, donAL MoLoney, MAGnUS qUAIfe, eT AL

Teaching Painting addresses the historical, theoretical, pedagogical and continually shifting methods of how the medium is and should be taught in art schools. It asks how and why approaches to teaching painting have changed and developed, and offers a platform through which practices can be experienced and shared.

Including texts from a broad range of academics from respected art institutions such as Glasgow School of Art, Leeds College of Art and Camberwell College of Arts, the book brings together a wide variety of approaches and methodologies, from hands-on practical discussions about workshops, to how painting should be taught on a psychological level.

The way in which painting is taught within art schools and academies has, in recent years, undergone several significant changes. As the barrier between media eroded into more fluid borders, art schools have responded by adapting and evolving. Many painting departments have been absorbed into general fine art courses, but specialise painting courses and pathways still continue to be developed. Teaching Painting explores the benefits and struggles of both approaches, and provides an excellent insight into how painting can be taught in the age of the Internet, social media and changes in the contemporary art environment.

GuTTers oF GoLD

AUTHoRS / ARTISTS:voLKeR eICHeLMAnn, STePHen TennAnT

30 years after Stephen Tennant’s death, volker eichelmann has visually resurrected Gutters of Gold as a publication that brings together his own collages and paintings alongside a rare selection of Tennant’s neglected oeuvre.

In 1925, Stephen Tennant (1906–1987) contemplated a novel about “high life with a capital H & full of crude impossibilities” but despite his elaborate preparations the book itself never materialised. Over the course of his sequestered life, in a Wiltshire manor house, Tennant produced abundant drawings of potential covers for the books he was never to write.

As an artist’s publication, Gutters of Gold innovatively highlights and expands on preoccupations shared by both Tennant and Eichelmann. In the book, reflections on landscape-gardens and water-features, Greek antiquities and ruination, horticulture and interior decoration unfold in a succession of evocative scenarios conceived by Eichelmann under chapter headings such as “Weekend in Valmouth”, “Mme d’Arpajon gets Drenched” and “Dinner at van Storck’s”.

With Tennant figuring amongst a number of historical and fictional protagonists who populate Eichelmann’s work, Gutters of Gold will provide a unique opportunity to appreciate the wider conceptual remit of Eichelmann’s practice.

unseen BY MY open eYes

AUTHoRS: KevIn GAffney, CAoIMHín MAC GIoLLA LéITH

Featuring five films by the young Irish filmmaker Kevin Gaffney, Unseen By My Open Eyes is the first publication on the artist’s work, exploring the psychological landscapes that the artist devises to explore the construction, projection and manipulation of identity.

Within the book, Gaffney’s films are presented through a series of richly illustrated sections, providing an excellent insight into the artist’s methodologies.

The book explores subjects ranging from: daily life in Iran; selfhood and military conscription in Taiwan; geographic, political and emotional separations in South Korea; food consumption in a self-sustaining militarised Ireland; and an exploration of former mining sites in Ireland.

Unseen by My Open Eyes features English scripts of the five films, with an appendix compiling the scripts in Korean, Chinese, Persian and Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic). Gaffney’s works are contextualised through an accompanying essay by Irish critic Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith.

Gaffney was the first Irish recipient of a Sky Academy Arts Scholarship in 2015, and was an UNESCO-Aschberg laureate artist in residence at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Changdong Residency in South Korea in 2014. His work features in the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s collection, and solo exhibitions have been held at the Linenhall Arts Centre (Ireland), Millennium Court Arts Centre (Northern Ireland) and CAI02 Contemporary Art Institute (Japan).

ConTRIbUToRS: dAnIeL bozHKov, ARnAUd GeRSPACHeR, KATe SUTTon, KATe wHITebReAd

In September 2016 a book of works by Martin Roth was published. presents the work of Austrian artist Martin Roth, whose practice moves across painting, sculpture, installation, video and interventions, working primarily with animals and plants.

Martin Roth works with living organisms that respond or develop according to their imminent patterns of behaviour, within conditions such as a gesture or a setting initiated by him. Frequently, his work examines how the introduction of an organic element can redefine a surface, an object or its relation to the surrounding space. His work can be large-scale and particular to a site; the fact that it requires the nurture of living organisms makes it strangely intimate and invites the viewer if not to engage directly, at least to consider his or her relationship to the work on a human scale.

The book collects documentary photographs of nine of Roth’s projects, including the raising of six ducklings in his studio then later releasing them into the wild, the release of a goldfish into the Chinese Court Garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the shipping of debris from Syria into the Louis B James Gallery, New York.

The artist has received glowing reviews in a number of publications, including The New York Times—“Roth’s work is ambitious, it forces visitors to walk among the detritus of war rather than viewing it in pictures, and saves a few tiny, token lives in the process”—and The New Yorker—“Roth’s work is landscape as conceptualist Haiku”.

Roth was featured as an emerging artist by Blouin Art Info, who said of his work: “All of his work has an appealing chaos to it—each project’s actual life of its own can flourish into unexpected moments of natural intervention.“
