We are delighted to introduce Mountview’s autumn season 2012, the first curated by our new Director of Performance, Stephen Jameson.

The season opens with Acting students in a quartet of plays exploring the murky backstage world of Elizabethan and Restoration theatre where actors are the rock ‘n’ roll stars of the day. Featuring works by some of today’s foremost stage writers, including Nicholas Wright and April De Angelis, they are directed by four bold young talents: Simon Evans, Abbey Wright, Max Key and Jessica Swale.

Musical Theatre students present two very different productions. Firstly Reefer Madness, a rock opera pastiche of the public health warning films of conservative 1930’s America and then Lorca’s tragedy of yearning, Yerma, which is presented at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith.

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Ending the year on a high.

In 1661 the most famous portrayer of female roles on the London stage is Edward Kynaston. A restoration stage celebrity, Mr K is the toast of London for his interpretation of Shakespeare’s heroines. But when Margaret Hughes plays Desdemona at an illegal theatre, instead of stopping the show, the ever-game Charles II changes the law to allow women to act. By the stroke of a pen, Kynaston’s world is turned upside down.

Richard Eyre directed Billy Crudup and Claire Danes in the 2004 film adaptation, Stage Beauty.

Abbey Wright studied at Oxford University and has been resident assistant director at the Donmar Warehouse. Previous directing credits include Dublin Carol at Trafalgar Studios and Bitch Boxer at Soho Theatre.

John Shank is an actor, talent scout and trainer of boy players in the seedily glamorous world of London theatre in the 1630s. Women are not seen on the stage, their roles being taken by precocious boys. Up to his eyes in debt, Shank’s only hope of escaping destitution is an unpromising 14-year-old would-be, Stephen Hammerton. Can he train Stephen to be the new star of the London stage?

Cressida premiered at the Almeida Theatre in 2000 with Michael Gambon as Shank.

Cressida is directed by Simon Evans. Simon was the Donmar Warehouse’s resident assistant director 2011-2012, and worked on Richard II, Inadmissible Evidence, Anna Christie and Moonlight.

By royal decree women are allowed to perform on stage for the first time. Little more than prostitutes, or at best sideshow novelties, the King and all of London society flock to witness the latest new beauty ‘act’. Playhouse Creatures explores the world of these first actresses as they claw their way from notoriety to respectability in their pursuit to become legitimate actors.

Playhouse Creatures is an early work by April De Angelis whose most recent play, Jumpy, premiered at the Royal Court with Tamsin Greig before transferring to Duke of York’s Theatre.

Jessica Swale has directed The Rivals, The Belle’s Stratagem and The Busy Body at Southwark Playhouse and has been described by Michael Billington in The Guardian as “our best young director of period comedy”.

The Libertine tells the story of the Earl of Rochester, John Wilmot, confidant of Charles II and the most notorious rake of his age. An anti-monarchist royalist, an atheist who converted to Christianity, poet and lover, Rochester embodies the spirit of the Restoration.

This thrilling, convincing portrait of the period centres on the moment that bad boy Rochester’s cynicism is confounded as he falls in love in earnest.

The Libertine was made into a film in 2004 starring Johnny Depp.

A graduate of the Young Vic Directors’ Programme, Max Key’s recent credits include The Turn of the Screw at Arcola Theatre, Land and Sea at Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh and Jim Cartwright’s Road at Mountview earlier in 2012.

Married for two years, Yerma longs for a child but her husband is cold to her desires. Gossip and superstition hang over their village.

Lorca’s beautiful and savage play is transplanted from the suffocating heat of Spain to a remote and rural Cornish landscape with the ensemble painting this physical story with music and passion through to the seemingly inevitable conclusion.

As the villagers make a pilgrimage to a site famed for fertility Yerma is driven to a final, terrible act.

Written in 1934, just two years before his death at the hands of fascist soldiers in an unknown field, Lorca described Yerma as a ‘tragic poem’. Nearly eighty years later that tragedy is undiminished.

It’s America in the 1930s. J Edgar Hoover is running the newly-founded FBI and conservatism is rife. Marijuana, the demon weed, is turning the nation’s children into depraved drug fiends. Rock musical Reefer Madness pastiches the public health warnings of the day.

Wholesome couple Jimmy Harper and Mary Lane are drawn from their English studies into a heady world of sex and psychosis, through jazz joints and hallucinatory orgies with singing poppies and dancing goats. Jesus and Franklin D Roosevelt, the President of the United States, try to intervene but will this be enough?
