Autumn Term 2017 - NEWSLETTER NO. 3 20 October 2017. We hope everyone has an enjoyable half term holiday and we look forward to seeing you on Monday 6 November. All the girls should be in winter uniform after half term. School woolly hats and plain navy blue gloves may also be worn. It is helpful to have everything named.

House Captains for the Autumn Term. Girls in Year 6 voted for the House Captains for the Autumn Term. They are: Barf: Annabel Simpson Mackie: Thea Speight Lee: Amelie Cresswell Newstead: Henny Gibson The House Captains will be responsible for counting up the week's House Stars and this is then announced in

assembly on Friday.

Flip-flop Appeal Update Mrs Schofield (mum of Anna in Y7) returned to school to talk to us in assembly about the success of the Flip-flop Appeal. The flip-flops were taken to King’s Orphanage in Bumala B in Kenya in the summer and the children were very pleased with them. The flip flops help to protect their feet against infections caused by jiggers. We were delighted that we could help so many children by collecting approximately 300 pairs of flip- flops and support the charity ‘One by One’. Thank you to everyone who supported the appeal.

Harvest Festival of Giving St. Catherine's Church and the Salvation Army in Wakefield were overwhelmed with our generous contributions to the food banks that they organise in the local community. We also have sent a cheque for £130 to each charity to enable them to supply some fresh food. They wish to pass on their thanks because our help will make a difference to families in need in Wakefield.

Charity Cake Sale Izzar Amir, Hareem Ghouri, Ishani Khundu and Gabrielle Vickers from 5LR and Isra Bhamji, Izzy Giles and Eliyah Pervais from 5TP held a cake sale to raise money for Water Aid and Starlight. There were so many different delicious buns, cakes, desserts and biscuits that it was very difficult to choose which to buy. We will let you know how much was raised in the next newsletter. It is lovely to see everyone thinking about others and finding ways of helping people less fortunate than ourselves. Well done!

Year 5 / Year 6 Drama Club

We are having fun playing drama games to develop our confidence, build teamwork skills and stretch our imagination and creativity. We have started working on singing T S Eliot's 'Jellicle Cats' and incorporating movements.

YEAR 3

As part of this terms Science topic, "Light and shadows", Year 3 have been participating in some exciting activities! The girls had great fun making shadow puppets and using them to explore ways to make their shadow larger or smaller. They have also been investigating how much light can travel through different materials. This week’s lesson included making a sundial and looking at how they help us tell the time! The classrooms have been covered in a carpet of glitter as the girls have enthusiastically been making their Christmas card design! In English they have drafted and edited their winter poems, using some wonderful, imaginative language.

YEAR 4 Year 4 have been hunting for invertebrates this week. With the help of Mr Ribeiro, ladybirds, spiders, slugs, woodlice, caterpillars and larvae, were found and carefully taken back to the classroom to inspect. Their distinctive features were used to group them appropriately. For example - with antennae, legs, 2-part bodies, wings. An exciting and interesting time was experienced by all of us!

We have also enjoyed learning how to do coding on the iPads YEAR 5 Year 5 worked hard and had fun on their visit to Cannon Hall as part of their Victorians topic.

The laundry was quite hard work but I enjoyed turning the wheel and grating the soap - Charlotte D’Arcy.

I enjoyed looking at all the food, medicines and stuffed animals in the larder but most of all churning the butter - Hareem Ghouri

I liked working in the kitchen at Cannon Hall, making the apple crumble. It was delicious! Bella Boswell

I liked hanging the laundry out in the yard, beating the carpet and polishing the Master’s shoes and saddle. - Abbi Riddiough

I really enjoyed the House Tour. I found out lots of interesting facts I didn’t already know about the Victorians. - Sophia Hilton

Year 5 also took part in a Drama workshop, 'What the Dickens', as part of their Victorians topic. The girls learnt even more about life in Victorian times by performing in this short play, enjoyed by parents. Thank you to Miss Druett who wrote and directed the play.

YEAR 6 In Year 6 French, we have been working hard on our classroom sketches, trying to incorporate the vocabulary and phrases we have learnt in class. We had to think carefully about pronunciation, working as a team and the content of our sketch. Océane, the French assistant from Québec, was impressed!

‘Draw like an Egyptian' We have enjoyed studying the style of Ancient Egyptian paintings. It was not easy to be an Egyptian model! We have drawn an Egyptian god or figure on papyrus following the rules of Egyptian art and are ready to paint our drawings using metallic paints next lesson.

FRENCH

In French, Year 6 enjoyed the French assistant, Océane's presentation about her life in Québec. The girls asked lots of interesting questions about life in Québec.

The event begins at 12pm and further details will follow. I know some of you are very organised and like to plan ahead so here are some of the dates for the Spring term! Upper School Choir (Under 11s) the date we are hoping to perform at the ‘Music for Youth’ Regional Festival is Saturday 10th March. All the Choirs will be taking part in the Harrogate Music Festival on either Saturday 17th or Sunday 18th March. As soon as I have a definite date I will send a letter with full details will be sent. Young Voices: Thank you to all those parents who have sent in ticket orders. These will be processed over the half term holiday. If you have not yet sent in your order but want tickets please could you email Mrs White by the end of the first week of the holiday and ensure that the slip and cheque is sent in on the first day back after half term. Many thanks. SPORT

Hockey The Under 9 and 10 hockey squads had an exciting afternoon of hockey at the Bradford Grammar School festival. In fast and furious 5 minute matches in which teams played without a goalkeeper, the play was end to end with lots of goals scored. The Under 9 team played well in their section and went through to the play-offs to finish in a very creditable 3

rd place. The Under 10 team found the going a little tougher, drawing 2 matches and losing 3 matches.

Excellent play from Addison Bruce, Evelyn Crompton and Holly Biggin-Wilcox.

The Under 11 hockey squads also played at Bradford Grammar School in friendly yet competitive matches. Both teams put on a fine performance of dynamic attacking and solid defence and it was obvious that their hard work at hockey club is paying off. Both teams secured wins in double figures without conceding any goals.

Outstanding play from Emelia Batty and Yvie Prior-Smith. Netball The Under 10 and Under 11 netball squads travelled to Sheffield High School for an afternoon of matches. The ‘Under 11 A’ squad played their best netball of the season and were unlucky to concede 2 goals in the final minute to come away with a draw. The ‘Under 11 B’ team fought hard in all areas of the court and had a narrow loss. The ‘Under 10 A’ team played particularly well in defence but did not quite convert their scoring opportunities in the shooting circle and lost by 1 goal. The ‘Under 10 B’ found it tough going and despite making real improvements in their play in the 3

rd and

4th quarters, they left it too late to secure a win.

Final scores: Under 11 A team drew 16 all Under 11 B team lost 6 – 9.

Under 10 A team lost 3 – 4 Under 10 B team lost 1 – 5

Outstanding play from Ellie Tingle, Maddy Patel, Mia Coxon and Ellie Burrows. Coming soon

The event will be hosted by Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chingyanganya. Evelyn will be performing a National Dance from the French Provençal Courts of the 14th century. The dance represents a beautiful girl dancing amongst the gardens of the courts for the royal nobility. Evelyn will dance at around 1.55-2.10pm.
