In June 2017, a woman out picnicking in the Wicklow Mountains stumbled upon something in a ditch that would set in motion a chain of events that horrified the nation. It was the first of fifteen dismembered body parts belonging to retired hospital worker Patricia O’Connor.

Kieran Greene, the father of three of Patricia’s grandchildren, later handed himself in, confessing to beating her to death in the home they shared in what he said was an act of self-defence. He also confessed to dismembering her and disposing of her remains but later changed his story, implicating several members of Patricia’s household, including her husband and daughter.

Our story goes back to 1856 when Michael Henry Gill, then printer to Dublin University, purchased the publishing and bookselling business of James McGlashan, forming McGlashan & Gill which then became M.H.Gill & Son, then Gill & Macmillan and, in 2016, simply Gill. The bookshop – popularly known as Gill’s and referenced several times in James Joyce’s Ulysses and Finnegans Wake – was located on Dublin’s O’Connell Street for 123 years until it closed in 1979. Six generations of the Gill family have managed the company, through World Wars, recessions and pandemics, dedicated to their mission of publishing books that inform, educate and entertain.

We have been honoured to publish the work of great writers, authorities and experts such as Noel Browne, Garret FitzGerald, Tom Garvin, Eamon de Buitlear, Myrtle Allen, Susan Jane White, Francis Brennan, Matt Cooper and Luke O’Neill.
