Film has its own language. This language is made upof shots. All lm is a series of pictures. Each picture iscomposed to help the audience to understand, to getmore from what they are looking at, and to elevatethe drama-or in this case, the dance.

This workshop intends to introduce the shots usedin lm making. Why they are used and when. It isaimed at beginners, dance professionals who needan introduction to lm, and indeed experienced lmmakers who want an introduction to Dance Film.Working with a dancer and a camera, we investigateframing, continuity, and montage in a scene, as wellas the use of a location and space. The main concernhowever will be what shots go where and why.

Steve Woods is a lm director, curator, and teachesexperimental animation at the National Film School

Bachs unaccompanied cello suites can be imagined asa musical soliloquy, like those of Shakespeare, addressing

the larger questions of our existence. They representthe pinnacle of achievement in unaccompaniedinstrumental composition.

Bach borrowed French dance forms, such as minuets, gavottes and bourres, to create a highly stylised setof dances, which, at the time of their composition, werenot intended to be danced to. In Soliloquy, Inma Pavoncreates dances for this music, as played by Eimear on thebaroque cello. Contrasting with the through-composedsuites, Inma uses the language of improvisation toexplore specic dance scores set to each of themovements of Bachs composition.

Inma says: Improvisation demands the full physical andmental attention of the dancer. I think of myself as abullghter entering the bullring. In this case it is not life ordeath but true dance or false dance.
